Abstract
Herein, core-shell magnetic nanoparticles are modified with imidazolium-tagged phosphine and propylene glycol moieties and used for the stabilization of bimetallic AuCu nanoparticles. The structure and morphology of the prepared material are identified with SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, atomic absorption spectroscopy, Fourier translation infrared spectroscopy, and a vibrating sample magnetometer. This hydrophilic magnetic bimetallic catalyst is applied in the reduction of toxic nitroarenes and reductive degradation of hazardous organic dyes such as methyl orange (MO), methyl red (MR), and rhodamine B (RhB), as well as in the degradation of tetracycline (TC). This magnetic AuCu catalyst indicated superior activity in all three mentioned reactions in comparison with its single metal Au and Cu analogs. This catalyst is recycled for 17 consecutive runs in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol without a significant decrease in catalytic activity and recycled catalyst is characterized.

Abstract
This research article focuses on the targeted color design of silver-gold alloy nanoparticles (NPs), employing a multivariate optimization approach. NP synthesis involves interconnected process parameters, making independent variation challenging. Data-based property-process relationships are established to optimize optical properties effectively. We define a color target, employ a green chemical co-reduction method at room temperature and optimize process parameters accordingly. The CIEL*a*b* color space (Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage - International Commission on Illumination) and Euclidean distances facilitate accurate color matching to establish the property-process relationship. Concurrently, theoretical Mie calculations explore the structure-property relationship across particle sizes, concentrations, and molar gold contents. The theoretically optimal structure agrees very well with experimental particle structures at the property-process relationship's optimum. The data-driven property-process relationship provides valuable insights into the formation mechanism of a complex particle system, sheds light on the role of relevant process parameters and allows to evaluate the practically available property space. Model validation beyond the original grid demonstrates its robustness, yielding colors close to the target. Additionally, Design of Experiments (DoE) methods reduce experimental work by threefold with slight accuracy trade-offs. Our novel methodology for targeted color design demonstrates how data-based methods can be utilized alongside structure-property relationships to unravel property-process relationships in the design of complex nanoparticle systems and paves the way for future developments in targeted property design.

Thermally Induced Surface Structure and Morphology Evolution in Bimetallic Pt-Au/HOPG Nanoparticles as Probed Using XPS and STM. NANOMATERIALS (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2023; 14:57. Abstract
Bimetallic nanoparticles expand the possibilities of catalyst design, providing an extra degree of freedom for tailoring the catalyst structure in comparison to purely monometallic systems. The distribution mode of two metal species defines the structure of surface catalytic sites, and current research efforts are focused on the development of methods for their controlled tuning. In light of this, a comprehensive investigation of the factors which influence the changes in the morphology of bimetallic nanoparticles, including the elemental redistribution, are mandatory for each particular bimetallic system. Here we present the combined XPS/STM study of the surface structure and morphology of bimetallic Pt-Au/HOPG nanoparticles prepared by thermal vacuum deposition and show that thermal annealing up to 350 °C induces the alloying process between the two bulk-immiscible metal components. Increasing the treatment temperature enhances the extent of Pt-Au alloying. However, the sintering of nanoparticles starts to occur above 500 °C. The approach implemented in this work includes the theoretical simulation of XPS signal intensities for a more meticulous analysis of the compositional distribution and can be helpful from a methodological perspective for other XPS/STM studies of bimetallic nanoparticles on planar supports.

Abstract
Metallic alloy nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit interesting optical, electrical and catalytic properties, dependent on their size, shape and composition. In particular, silver-gold alloy NPs are widely applied as model systems to better understand the syntheses and formation (kinetics) of alloy NPs, as the two elements are fully miscible. Our study targets product design via environmentally friendly synthesis conditions. We use dextran as the reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of homogeneous silver-gold alloy NPs at room temperature. Our approach is a one-pot, low temperature, reaction-controlled, green and scalable synthesis route of well-controlled composition and narrow particle size distribution. The composition over a broad range of molar gold contents is confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX) measurements and auxiliary inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy measurements (ICP-OES). The distributions of the resulting particles in size and composition are obtained from multi-wavelength analytical ultracentrifugation using the optical back coupling method and further confirmed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Finally, we provide insight into the reaction kinetics during the synthesis, discuss the reaction mechanism and demonstrate possibilities for scale-up by a factor of more than 250 by increasing the reactor volume and NP concentration.

Abstract
In a recent work [A. Nassereddine et al., Small 2021, 17, 2104571] we reported the atomic-scale structure and dynamics of sub-4 nm sized Au nanoparticles (NPs) supported on titania in H2 at atmospheric pressure obtained by using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM), density functional theory (DFT) optimizations and ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations. Our results showed unstable Au NPs losing their face-centred cubic (fcc) symmetry (from fcc to non-fcc symmetries) and revealed the drastic effect of hydrogen adsorption. In this work, we use the same approach to study the dynamics of equiatomic Au-Cu NPs in the same range of size and the results show an enhanced structural stability upon alloying by Cu. In spite of the morphology evolution from facetted to rounded shapes, the observed Au-Cu NPs are found to keep their fcc symmetry under atmospheric hydrogen pressure. AIMD simulation evidences a Cu segregation process from the sub-surface toward the upper surface layer, and a reversed segregation of Au atoms from the surface towards the sub-surface sites. The analysis of the chemical ordering in the core shows a tendency to a local chemical ordering where Au-Cu hetero-atomic bindings are favoured. The segregating Cu seems to play a major role in reducing the fluxionality of Au-Cu NPs in H2 and thus, maintaining their fcc symmetry.

Abstract
Ball milling is growing increasingly important as an alternative synthetic tool to prepare catalytic materials. It was recently observed that supported metal catalysts could be directly obtained upon ball milling from the coarse powders of metal and oxide support. Moreover, when two compatible metal sources are simultaneously subjected to the mechanochemical treatment, bimetallic nanoparticles are obtained. A systematic investigation was extended to different metals and supports to understand better the mechanisms involved in the comminution and alloying of metal nanoparticles. Based on this, a model describing the role of metal-support interactions in the synthesis was developed. The findings will be helpful for the future rational design of supported metal catalysts via dry ball milling.

Abstract
Bimetallic Ni–Sn alloys have been recognised as promising catalysts for the transformation of furanic compounds and their derivatives into valuable chemicals. Herein, we report the utilisation of a supported bimetallic RANEY® nickel–tin alloy supported on aluminium hydroxide (RNi–Sn(x)/AlOH; x is Ni/Sn molar ratio) catalysts for the one-pot conversion of biomass-derived furfural and levulinic acid to 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PeD). The as prepared RNi–Sn(1.4)/AlOH catalyst exhibited the highest yield of 1,4-PeD (78%). The reduction of RNi–Sn(x)/AlOH with H2 at 673–873 K for 1.5 h resulted in the formation of Ni–Sn alloy phases (e.g., Ni3Sn and Ni3Sn2) and caused the transformation of aluminium hydroxide (AlOH) to amorphous alumina (AA). The RNi–Sn(1.4)/AA 673 K/H2 catalyst contained a Ni3Sn2 alloy as the major phase, which exhibited the best yield of 1,4-PeD from furfural (87%) at 433 K, H2 3.0 MPa for 12 h and from levulinic acid (up to 90%) at 503 K, H2 4.0 MPa, for 12 h. Supported RANEY® Ni–Sn(1.5)/AC and three types of supported Ni–Sn(1.5) alloy (e.g., Ni–Sn(1.5)/AC, Ni–Sn(1.5)/c-AlOH, and Ni–Sn(1.5)/γ-Al2O3) catalysts afforded high yields of 1,4-PeD (65–87%) both from furfural and levulinic acid under the optimised reaction conditions. The RANEY® Ni–Sn(x) alloy catalysed the one-pot conversion of biomass-derived furfural and levulinic acid to allow remarkable yield of 1,4-pentanediol (up to 90%) under the mild reaction conditions.![]()

A feature of the procedure is the simultaneous formation of metal nanoparticles and a carbon support during the heat treatment of a precursor based on a joint solution of a polymer and metal compounds under the effect of IR radiation. The phase composition, morphology of samples, and structural features of the carbon support are shown, depending on the nature of the metals that are used.

Abstract
One-step preparation method of metal-carbon nanocomposites based on bimetallic Co–Ru nanoparticles supported and IR carbonized polyacrylonitrile was proposed. IR pyrolysis of the precursor based on joint solution of polyacrylonitrile and metal compounds leads to the simultaneous formation of carbon support and bimetallic metal nanoparticles. The metal reduction occures due to the release of hydrogen during decomposition of backbone polymer chain. Furthermore, IR radiation shortens fabrication time significantly. It was shown that the presence of cobalt and ruthenium in the system provides the creation of alloy Co–Ru nanoparticles. In addition, cobalt provides a formation of structured carbon shells around bimetallic nanoparticles. The nanocomposites were tested as catalysts for the hydrogen production through ethanol steam reforming. The dependence of structural and functional properties on the metal loading was demonstrated. The high yield of hydrogen was recorded for all three samples, whereas the by-product yield was relatively low.

Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Urchin-Like CuO: Synthesis, Characterization, and Their Catalytic Performance for CO Oxidation. NANOMATERIALS 2019; 10:nano10010067. Abstract
Gold catalysts have been studied in-depth due to their unique activities for catalytic CO oxidation. Supports have intrinsic motivation for the high activity of gold catalysts. Thermally stable urchin-like CuO microspheres, which are potential support for gold catalysts, were prepared by facile solution-method. Then gold nanoparticles were loaded on them by deposition-precipitation method. The obtained gold catalysts were characterized by SEM, XRD, TEM, BET, ICP, and XPS. Their catalytic activity for CO oxidation was also evaluated. TEM results revealed that the gold nanoparticles with small sizes were highly distributed on the CuO surface in Au1.0/CuO-300. XPS observations demonstrated that the gold species in Au1.0/CuO-300 was of metallic state. Among the as-prepared catalysts, the Au1.0/CuO-300 catalyst displayed the best performance for CO oxidation and achieved 100% CO oxidation at 80 °C. It kept 100% conversion for 20 h at a reaction temperature of 180 °C, and showed good reusability after three reaction-cycles. The possible catalytic mechanism of Au1.0/CuO-300 catalyst for CO oxidation was also briefly proposed.
