The Concept of Symmetry and the Theory of Perception

Perceptual constancy refers to the fact that the perceived geometrical and physical characteristics of objects remain constant despite transformations of the objects such as rigid motion. Perceptual constancy is essential in everything we do, like recognition of familiar objects and scenes, planning and executing visual navigation, visuomotor coordination, and many more. Perceptual constancy would not exist without the geometrical and physical permanence of objects: their shape, size, and weight. Formally, perceptual constancy and permanence of objects are invariants, also known in mathematics and physics as symmetries. Symmetries of the Laws of Physics received a central status due to mathematical theorems of Emmy Noether formulated and proved over 100 years ago. These theorems connected symmetries of the physical laws to conservation laws through the least-action principle. We show how Noether's theorem is applied to mirror-symmetrical objects and establishes mental shape representation (perceptual conservation) through the application of a simplicity (least-action) principle. This way, the formalism of Noether's theorem provides a computational explanation of the relation between the physical world and its mental representation.

Stochastic optimal feedforward-feedback control determines timing and variability of arm movements with or without vision

Human movements with or without vision exhibit timing (i.e. speed and duration) and variability characteristics which are not well captured by existing computational models. Here, we introduce a stochastic optimal feedforward-feedback control (SFFC) model that can predict the nominal timing and trial-by-trial variability of self-paced arm reaching movements carried out with or without online visual feedback of the hand. In SFFC, movement timing results from the minimization of the intrinsic factors of effort and variance due to constant and signal-dependent motor noise, and movement variability depends on the integration of visual feedback. Reaching arm movements data are used to examine the effect of online vision on movement timing and variability, and test the model. This modelling suggests that the central nervous system predicts the effects of sensorimotor noise to generate an optimal feedforward motor command, and triggers optimal feedback corrections to task-related errors based on the available limb state estimate.

Humidity-Driven Soft Actuator Built up Layer-by-Layer and Theoretical Insight into Its Mechanism of Energy Conversion

An improved protocol is proposed for preparation of a humidity-sensitive soft actuator through the layer-by-layer assembling of weight-ratio-variable composites of sodium alginate (SA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) into laminated structures. The design induces nonuniform hygroscopicity in the thickness direction and gives rise to strong interfacial interaction between layers, making the actuator have directional motility. A mathematical model reveals that the directional motion is driven by the chemical potential of humidity, and its energy conversion efficiency from humidity to mechanical work reaches 81.2% at 25 °C. By coating with CoCl₂, the composite film of SA@PVA/CoCl₂ can act as a warning sign that provides reminder information to prevent people from slipping or falling by a conspicuous red sign during a high-humidity environment. When the film is involved in a bidirectional switch, it is capable of turning on/off light-emitting diodes by humidity, showing promising potential in control over humidity-dependent devices.

Unifying Physics and Psychophysics on the Basis of Symmetry, Least-Action ≈ Simplicity Principle, and Conservation Laws ≈ Veridicality

Psychophysics is the branch of experimental psychology that deals with the study of sensation and perception. A consensus has grown up among experts in psychophysics in the last hundred years that the human being’s percepts are inferences, which are based on a minimum, or simplicity, principle that is applied to the currently available sensory data. These educated guesses play the critical role in establishing veridical perceptual representations of the three-dimensional environment, where by “veridical” we mean that the percept agrees with what is “out there.” These veridical representations cannot be achieved without making use of symmetries, much like those known in physics, where they are essential for characterizing our physical world and deriving the conservation laws. But, unlike in physics, the important role that symmetry plays in psychophysics has been demonstrated and explained only within the last 10 years. Symmetries represent regularities in our physical world. These symmetries also serve as the source of the redundancies that are inherent in 3D objects and make vision possible. The main goal of this article is to show that the similarity between the mathematical formalisms used in physics and in psychophysics is not coincidental and that exploring this similarity can benefit the sciences of perception and cognition. This article includes a brief tutorial about symmetry groups and their relationship to transformation groups as well as to their invariants. It was included to make this material available to readers who are not familiar with these topics.

Vigour of self-paced reaching movement: cost of time and individual traits

People usually move at a self-selected pace in everyday life. Yet, the principles underlying the formation of human movement vigour remain unclear, particularly in view of intriguing inter-individual variability. It has been hypothesized that how the brain values time may be the cornerstone of such differences, beyond biomechanics. Here, we focused on the vigour of self-paced reaching movement and assessed the stability of vigour via repeated measurements within participants. We used an optimal control methodology to identify a cost of time (CoT) function underlying each participant’s vigour, considering a model of the biomechanical cost of movement. We then tested the extent to which anthropometric or psychological traits, namely boredom proneness and impulsivity, could account for a significant part of inter-individual variance in vigour and CoT parameters. Our findings show that the vigour of reaching is largely idiosyncratic and tend to corroborate a relation between the relative steepness of the identified CoT and boredom proneness, a psychological trait relevant to one’s relationship with time in decision-making.

High monetary reward rates and caloric rewards decrease temporal persistence

Temporal persistence refers to an individual's capacity to wait for future rewards, while forgoing possible alternatives. This requires a trade-off between the potential value of delayed rewards and opportunity costs, and is relevant to many real-world decisions, such as dieting. Theoretical models have previously suggested that high monetary reward rates, or positive energy balance, may result in decreased temporal persistence. In our study, 50 fasted participants engaged in a temporal persistence task, incentivised with monetary rewards. In alternating blocks of this task, rewards were delivered at delays drawn randomly from distributions with either a lower or higher maximum reward rate. During some blocks participants received either a caloric drink or water. We used survival analysis to estimate participants' probability of quitting conditional on the delay distribution and the consumed liquid. Participants had a higher probability of quitting in blocks with the higher reward rate. Furthermore, participants who consumed the caloric drink had a higher probability of quitting than those who consumed water. Our results support the predictions from the theoretical models, and importantly, suggest that both higher monetary reward rates and physiologically relevant rewards can decrease temporal persistence, which is a crucial determinant for survival in many species.
