Oxygen doping of cobalt-single-atom coordination enhances peroxymonosulfate activation and high-valent cobalt-oxo species formation

Selective oxidation decontamination in cobalt molybdate activated Fenton-like oxidation via synergic effect of cobalt and molybdenum

In this study, cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) activated peracetic acid (PAA) was developed for water purification. CoMoO4/PAA system could remove 95% SMX with pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 0.15410 min-1, which was much higher than CoFe2O4/PAA, FeMoO4/PAA, and CoMoO4/persulfate systems. CoMoO4/PAA system follows a non-radical species pathway dominated by the high-valent cobalt (Co(IV)), and CH3C(O)OO• shows a minor contribution to decontamination. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the generation of Co(IV) is thermodynamically more favorable than CH3C(O)OO• generation. The abundant Co(IV) generation was attributed to the special structure of CoMoO4 and effect of molybdenum on redox cycle of Co(II)/Co(III). DFT calculation showed that the atoms of SMX with higher ƒ0 and ƒ- values are the main attack sites, which are in accordance with the results of degradation byproducts. CoMoO4/PAA system can effectively reduce biological toxicity after the reaction. Benefiting from the selective of Co(IV) and CH3C(O)OO•, the established CoMoO4/PAA system exhibits excellent anti-interference capacity and satisfactory decontamination performance under actual water conditions. Furthermore, the system was capable of good potential practical application for efficient removal of various organics and favorable reuse. Overall, this study provides a new strategy by CoMoO4 activated PAA for decontamination with high efficiency, high selectivity and favorable anti-interference.

Bioinspired axial S-coordinated single-atom cobalt catalyst to efficient activate peroxymonosulfate for selective high-valent Co-Oxo species generation

The efficient activation and selective high-valent metal-oxo (HVMO) species generation remain challenging for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) in water purification. The underlying mechanism of the activation pathway is ambiguous, leading to a massive dilemma in the control and regulation of HVMO species generation. Herein, bioinspired by the bio-oxidase structure of cytochrome P450, the axial coordination strategy was adopted to tailor a single-atom cobalt catalyst (CoN4S-CB) with an axial S coordination. CoN4S-CB high-selectively generated high-valent Co-Oxo species (Co(IV)=O) via PMS activation. Co(IV)=O demonstrated an ingenious oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reaction to achieve the efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and this allowed robust operation in various complex environments. The axial S coordination modulated the 3d orbital electron distribution of the Co atom. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the axial S coordination decreased the energy barrier for PMS desorption and lowered the free energy change (ΔG) for Co(IV)=O generation. CoN4S-PMS* had a narrow d-band close to the Fermi level, which enhanced charge transfer to accelerate the cleavage of O-O and O-H bonds in PMS. This work provides a broader perspective on the activator design with natural enzyme structure-like active sites to efficient activate PMS for selective HVMO species generation.

Nanowire-assisted electroporation via inducing cell destruction for inhibiting formation of VBNC bacteria: Comparison with chlorination

The induction of viable but nonculturable (VBNC) bacteria with cellular integrity and low metabolic activity by chemical disinfection causes a significant underestimation of potential microbiological risks in drinking water. Herein, a physical Co3O4 nanowire-assisted electroporation (NW-EP) was developed to induce cell damage via the locally enhanced electric field over nanowire tips, potentially achieving effective inhibition of VBNC cells as compared with chemical chlorination (Cl2). NW-EP enabled over 5-log removal of culturable cell for various G+/G- bacteria under voltage of 1.0 V and hydraulic retention time of 180 s, and with ∼3-6 times lower energy consumption than Cl2. NW-EP also achieved much higher removals (∼84.6 % and 89.5 %) of viable Bacillus cereus (G+) and Acinetobacter schindleri (G-) via generating unrecoverable pores on cell wall and reversible/irreversible pores on cell membrane than Cl2 (∼28.6 % and 41.1 %) with insignificant cell damage. The residual VBNC bacteria with cell wall damage and membrane pore resealing exhibited gradual inactivation by osmotic stress, leading to ∼99.8 % cell inactivation after 24 h storage (∼59.4 % for Cl2). Characterizations of cell membrane integrity and cell morphology revealed that osmotic stress promoted cell membrane damage for the gradual inactivation of VBNC cells during storage. The excellent adaptability of NW-EP for controlling VBNC cells in DI, tap and lake waters suggested its promising application potentials for drinking water, such as design of an external device on household taps.

Were Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation Processes Really Understood? Basic Concepts, Cognitive Biases, and Experimental Details

Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for pollutant removal have attracted extensive interest, but some controversies about the identification of reactive species were usually observed. This critical review aims to comprehensively introduce basic concepts and rectify cognitive biases and appeals to pay more attention to experimental details in PS-AOPs, so as to accurately explore reaction mechanisms. The review scientifically summarizes the character, generation, and identification of different reactive species. It then highlights the complexities about the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance, the uncertainties about the use of probes and scavengers, and the necessities about the determination of scavenger concentration. The importance of the choice of buffer solution, operating mode, terminator, and filter membrane is also emphasized. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future perspectives to alleviate the misinterpretations toward reactive species and reaction mechanisms in PS-AOPs.

The "4 + 1" strategy fabrication of iron single-atom catalysts with selective high-valent iron-oxo species generation

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with atomic dispersion active sites have exhibited huge potentials in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based Fenton-like chemistry in water purification. However, four-N coordination metal (MN4) moieties often suffer from such problems as low selectivity and narrow workable pH. How to construct SACs in a controllable strategy with optimized electronic structures is of great challenge. Herein, an innovative strategy (i.e., the "4 + 1" fabrication) was devised to precisely modulate the first-shell coordinated microenvironment of FeN4 SAC using an additional N (SA-FeN5). This leads to almost 100% selective formation of high-valent iron-oxo [Fe(IV)═O] (steady-state concentration: 2.00 × 10-8 M) in the SA-FeN5/PMS system. In-depth theoretical calculations unveil that FeN5 configuration optimizes the electron distribution of monatomic Fe sites, which thus fosters PMS adsorption and reduces the energy barrier for Fe(IV)═O generation. SA-FeN5 was then attached to polyvinylidene difluoride membrane for a continuous flow device, showing long-term abatement of the microcontaminant. This work furnishes a general strategy for effective PMS activation and selective high-valent metal-oxo species generation by high N-coordination number regulation in SACs, which would provide guidance in the rational design of superior environmental catalysts for water purification.

Iron single atoms anchored on ultrathin carbon nitride photocatalyst for visible light-driven water decontamination

Graphitic carbon nitride has gained considerable attention as a visible-light photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is restricted by its limited capacity for absorbing visible light and swift recombination of charge carriers. To overcome this bottleneck, we fabricated an atomic Fe-dispersed ultrathin carbon nitride (Fe-UTCN) photocatalyst via one-step thermal polymerization. Fe-UTCN showed high efficiency in the photodegradation of acetaminophen (APAP), achieving > 90 % elimination within 60-min visible light irradiation. The anchoring of Fe atoms improved the photocatalytic activity of UTCN by narrowing the bandgap from 2.50 eV to 2.33 eV and suppressing radiative recombination. Calculations by density functional theory revealed that the Fe-N4 sites (adsorption energy of - 3.10 eV) were preferred over the UTCN sites (adsorption energy of - 0.18 eV) for the adsorption of oxygen and the subsequent formation of O2•-, the dominant reactive species in the degradation of APAP. Notably, the Fe-UTCN catalyst exhibited good stability after five successive runs and was applicable to complex water matrices. Therefore, Fe-UTCN, a noble-metal-free photocatalyst, is a promising candidate for visible light-driven water decontamination.

The Surface Confinement of FeO Assists in the Generation of Singlet Oxygen and High-Valent Metal-Oxo Species for Enhanced Fenton-Like Catalysis

Transition metal compounds (TMCs) have long been potential candidate catalysts in persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOPs) due to their Fenton-like catalyze ability for radical generation. However, the mechanism involved in TMCs-catalyzed nonradical PS-AOPs remains obscure. Herein, the growth of FeO on the Fe3O4/carbon precursor is regulated by restricted pyrolysis of MIL-88A template to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) removal. The higher FeO incorporation conferred a 2.6 times higher degradation performance than that catalyzed by Fe3O4 and also a higher interference resistance to anions or natural organic matter. Unexpectedly, the quenching experiment, probe method, and electron paramagnetic resonance quantitatively revealed that the FeO reassigned high nonradical species (1O2 and FeIV═O) generation to replace original radical system created by Fe3O4. Density functional theory calculation interpreted that PMS molecular on strongly-adsorbed (200) and (220) facets of FeO enjoyed unique polarized electronic reception for surface confinement effect, thus the retained peroxide bond energetically supported the production of 1O2 and FeIV═O. This work promotes the mechanism understanding of TMCs-induced surface-catalyzed persulfate activation and enables them better perform catalytic properties in wastewater treatment.

Oxygen Doping Cooperated with Co-N-Fe Dual-Catalytic Sites: Synergistic Mechanism for Catalytic Water Purification within Nanoconfined Membrane

Atom-site catalysts, especially for graphitic carbon nitride-based catalysts, represents one of the most promising candidates in catalysis membrane for water decontamination. However, unravelling the intricate relationships between synthesis-structure-properties remains a great challenge. This study addresses the impacts of coordination environment and structure units of metal central sites based on Mantel test, correlation analysis, and evolution of metal central sites. An optimized unconventional oxygen doping cooperated with Co-N-Fe dual-sites (OCN Co/Fe) exhibits synergistic mechanism for efficient peroxymonosulfate activation, which benefits from a significant increase in charge density at the active sites and the regulation in the natural population of orbitals, leading to selective generation of SO4 •-. Building upon these findings, the OCN-Co/Fe/PVDF composite membrane demonstrates a 33 min-1 ciprofloxacin (CIP) rejection efficiency and maintains over 96% CIP removal efficiency (over 24 h) with an average permeance of 130.95 L m-2 h-1. This work offers a fundamental guide for elucidating the definitive origin of catalytic performance in advance oxidation process to facilitate the rational design of separation catalysis membrane with improved performance and enhanced stability.

Cu-optimized long-range interaction between Co nanoparticles and Co single atoms: Improved Fenton-like reaction activity

The interplay between multi-atom assembly configurations and single atoms (SAs) has been gaining attention in research. However, the effect of long-term range interactions between SAs and multi-atom assemblies on the orbital filling characteristics has yet to be investigated. In this context, we introduced copper (Cu) doping to strengthen the interaction between cobalt (Co) nanoparticles (NPs) and Co SAs by promoting the spontaneous formation of Co-Cu alloy NPs that tends toward aggregation owing to its negative cohesive energy (-0.06454), instead of forming Cu SAs. The incorporation of Cu within the Co-Cu alloy NPs, compared to the pure Co NPs, significantly expedites the kinetics of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation processes on Co SAs. Unlike Co NPs, Co-Cu NPs facilitate electron rearrangement in the d orbitals (especially dz2 and dxz) near the Fermi level in Co SAs, thereby optimizing the dz2-O (PMS) and dxz-O (SO5-) orbital interaction. Eventually, the Co-Cu alloy NPs embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (CC@CNC) catalysts rapidly eliminated 80.67% of 20 mg/L carbamazepine (CBZ) within 5 min. This performance significantly surpasses that of catalysts consisting solely of Co NPs in a similar matrix (C@CNC), which achieved a 58.99% reduction in 5 min. The quasi in situ characterization suggested that PMS acts as an electron donor and will transfer electrons to Co SAs, generating 1O2 for contaminant abatement. This study offers valuable insights into the mechanisms by which composite active sites formed through multi-atom assembly interact at the atomic orbital level to achieve high-efficiency PMS-based advanced oxidation processes at the atomic orbital level.

Atomically dispersed cobalt activator with nitrogen and sulfur co-coordination for high-efficiency Fenton-like catalysis: Insights into density-dependent activity and mechanisms

Atomically dispersed metal activators (ADMAs) have demonstrated unique advantages in environmental remediation, but how to controllably regulate the active site density and electronic structure of ADMAs to further enhance activation efficiency remains challenging. Here, we introduce a sulfur-atom-doping approach that allows the fine-tuning of atomic Co site content and electronic structure, enabling exploration of density-dependent activation performance of ADMAs for peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based Fenton-like catalysis. Our investigation reveals a direct correlation between activation capacity and single-Co-site density. The optimal SNC@CoSA-0.05 activator with densely populated Co-N3S1 sites (10.1 wt%) displays exceptional efficacy in eliminating Rhodamine B, with specific activity of 31.0 min-1 g-1 L, outperforming most previously published activators. Moreover, SNC@CoSA-0.05 showed a remarkedly reduced metal leaching (47.4 μg L-1) than its nanocluster counterpart (194 μg L-1) at pH 3.2. Experimental and theoretical analyses unveiled that coordinated sulfur actively modulates the electronic structure of the central Co atom, enhancing the adsorption and activation of PMS, thereby improving decontamination efficiency. Mechanistic studies further elucidate the predominant electron-transfer regime involved in oxidizing micropollutants by SNC@CoSA-0.05/PMS, with Co(IV)=O, •OH, and SO4•- being the auxiliary oxidizing species. This study not only offers a method for concurrent adjustment of active site density and electronic structure in ADMAs but also sheds light on the activation mechanisms of atomic metal sites.

How hetero-single-atom dispersion reconstructed electronic structure of carbon materials and regulated Fenton-like oxidation pathways

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as competitive candidates for Fenton-like oxidation of micro-pollutants in water. However, the impact of metal insertion on the intrinsic catalytic activity of carrier materials has been commonly overlooked, and the environmental risk due to metal leaching still requires attention. In contrast to previous reports, where metal sites were conventionally considered as catalytic centers, our study investigates, for the first time, the crucial catalytic role of the carbon carrier modulated through hetero-single-atom dispersion and the regulation of Fenton-like oxidation pathways. The inherent differences in electronic properties between Fe and Co can effectively trigger long-range electron rearrangement in the sp2-carbon-conjugated structure, creating more electron-rich regions for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) complexation and initiating the electron transfer process (ETP) for pollutant degradation, which imparts the synthesized catalyst (FeCo-NCB) with exceptional catalytic efficiency despite its relatively low metal content. Moreover, the FeCo-NCB/PMS system exhibits enduring decontamination efficiency in complex water matrices, satisfactory catalytic stability, and low metal leaching, signifying promising practical applications. More impressively, the spatial relationship between metal sites and electron density clouds is revealed to determine whether high-valent metal-oxo species (HVMO) are involved during the decomposition of surface complexes. Unlike single-type single-atom dispersion, where metal sites are situated within electron-rich regions, hetero-single-atom dispersion can cause the deviation of electron density clouds from the metal sites, thus hindering the in-situ oxidation of metal within the complexes and minimizing the contribution of HVMO. These findings provide new insights into the development of carbon-based SACs and advance the understanding of nonradical mechanisms underpinning Fenton-like treatments.

Advances in Atomically Dispersed Metal and Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Catalysts for Advanced Oxidation Technologies and Water Remediation: From Microenvironment Modulation to Non-Radical Mechanisms

Atomically dispersed metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon catalysts (M-N-C) have been attracting tremendous attentions thanks to their unique MNx active sites and fantastic catalytic activities in advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) for water remediation. However, precisely tailoring the microenvironment of active sites at atomic level is still an intricate challenge so far, and understanding of the non-radical mechanisms in persulfate activation exists many uncertainties. In this review, latest developments on the microenvironment modulation strategies of atomically dispersed M-N-C catalysts including regulation of central metal atoms, regulation of coordination numbers, regulation of coordination heteroatoms, and synergy between single-atom catalysts (SACs) with metal species are systematically highlighted and discussed. Afterwards, progress and underlying limitations about the typical non-radical pathways from production of singlet oxygen, electron transfer mechanism to generation of high-valent metal species are well demonstrated to inspire intrinsic insights about the mechanisms of M-N-C/persulfate systems. Lastly, perspectives for the remaining challenges and opportunities about the further development of carbon-based SACs in environment remediation are also pointed out. It is believed that this review will be much valuable for the further design of active sites in M-N-C/persulfate catalytic systems and promote the wide application of SACs in various fields.

Heteroatom substitution enhances generation and reactivity of surface-activated peroxydisulfate complexes for catalytic fenton-like reactions

Peroxydisulfate (PDS)-based Fenton-like reactions are promising advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to degrade recalcitrant organic water pollutants. Current research predominantly focuses on augmenting the generation of reactive species (e.g., surface-activated PDS complexes (PDS*) to improve treatment efficiency, but overlooks the potential benefits of enhancing the reactivity of these species. Here, we enhanced PDS* generation and reactivity by incorporating Zn into CuO catalyst lattice, which resulted in 99% degradation of 4-chlorophenol within only 10 min. Zn increased PDS* generation by nearly doubling PDS adsorption while maintaining similar PDS to PDS* conversion efficiency, and induced higher PDS* reactivity than the common catalyst CuO, as indicated by a 4.1-fold larger slope between adsorbed PDS and open circuit potential of a catalytic electrode. Cu-O-Zn formation upshifts the d-band center of Cu sites and lowers the energy barrier for PDS adsorption and sulfate desorption, resulting in enhanced PDS* generation and reactivity. Overall, this study informs strategies to enhance PDS* reactivity and design highly active catalysts for efficient AOPs.

Electro-oxidation of Ibuprofen using carbon-supported SnOx-CeOx flow-anodes: The key role of high-valent metal

Exploiting electrochemically active materials as flow-anodes can effectively alleviate mass transfer restriction in an electro-oxidation system. However, the electrocatalytic activity and persistence of the conventional flow-anode materials are insufficient, resulting in limited improvement in the electro-oxidation rate and efficiency. Herein, we reported a rational strategy to substantially enhance the electrocatalytic performance of flow-anodes in electro-oxidation by introducing the redox cycle of high-valent metal in a suitable carbon substrate. The characterization suggested that the SnOx-CeOx/carbon black (CB) featured well-distributed morphology, rapid charge transfer, high oxygen evolution potential, and strong water adsorption, and stood out among three kinds of SnOx-CeOx loaded carbon materials. Mechanistic analysis indicated that the redox cycle of Ce species played a key role in accelerating the electron transfer from SnOx to CB directionally and could continuously create the electron-deficient state of the SnOx, thereby sustainably triggering the generation of ·OH. All these features enabled the resulting SnOx-CeOx/CB flow-anode to accomplish a calculated maximum kinetic constant of 0.02461 1/min, a higher current efficiency of 47.1%, and a lower energy consumption of 21.3 kWh/kg COD compared with other conventional flow-anodes reported to date. Additionally, SnOx-CeOx/CB exhibited excellent stability with extremely low leaching concentrations of Sn and Ce ions. This study provides a feasible manner for efficient water decontamination using the electro-oxidation system with SnOx-CeOx/CB.

Electronic structure modulation of iron sites with fluorine coordination enables ultra-effective H2O2 activation

Electronic structure modulation of active sites is critical important in Fenton catalysis as it offers a promising strategy for boosting H2O2 activation. However, efficient generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) is often limited to the unoptimized coordination environment of active sites. Herein, we report the rational design and synthesis of iron oxyfluoride (FeOF), whose iron sites strongly coordinate with the most electronegative fluorine atoms in a characteristic moiety of F-(Fe(III)O3)-F, for effective H2O2 activation with potent •OH generation. Results demonstrate that the fluorine coordination plays a pivotal role in lowering the local electron density and optimizing the electronic structures of iron sites, thus facilitating the rate-limiting H2O2 adsorption and subsequent peroxyl bond cleavage reactions. Consequently, FeOF exhibits a significant and pH-adaptive •OH yield (~450 µM) with high selectivity, which is 1 ~ 3 orders of magnitude higher than the state-of-the-art iron-based catalysts, leading to excellent degradation activities against various organic pollutants at neutral condition. This work provides fundamental insights into the function of fluorine coordination in boosting Fenton catalysis at atomic level, which may inspire the design of efficient active sites for sustainable environmental remediation.

Utilizing the oxygen-atom trapping effect of Co3O4 with oxygen vacancies to promote chlorite activation for water decontamination

Heterogeneous high-valent cobalt-oxo [≡Co(IV)=O] is a widely focused reactive species in oxidant activation; however, the relationship between the catalyst interfacial defects and ≡Co(IV)=O formation remains poorly understood. Herein, photoexcited oxygen vacancies (OVs) were introduced into Co3O4 (OV-Co3O4) by a UV-induced modification method to facilitate chlorite (ClO2-) activation. Density functional theory calculations indicate that OVs result in low-coordinated Co atom, which can directionally anchor chlorite under the oxygen-atom trapping effect. Chlorite first undergoes homolytic O-Cl cleavage and transfers the dissociated O atom to the low-coordinated Co atom to form reactive ≡Co(IV)=O with a higher spin state. The reactive ≡Co(IV)=O rapidly extracts one electron from ClO2- to form chlorine dioxide (ClO2), accompanied by the Co atom returning a lower spin state. As a result of the oxygen-atom trapping effect, the OV-Co3O4/chlorite system achieved a 3.5 times higher efficiency of sulfamethoxazole degradation (~0.1331 min-1) than the pristine Co3O4/chlorite system. Besides, the refiled OVs can be easily restored by re-exposure to UV light, indicating the sustainability of the oxygen atom trap. The OV-Co3O4 was further fabricated on a polyacrylonitrile membrane for back-end water purification, achieving continuous flow degradation of pollutants with low cobalt leakage. This work presents an enhancement strategy for constructing OV as an oxygen-atom trapping site in heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes and provides insight into modulating the formation of ≡Co(IV)=O via defect engineering.

Regulating electronic structure of Fe single-atom site by S/N dual-coordination for efficient Fenton-like catalysis

The activity of single-atom catalysts in peroxymonosulfate activation process is bound up with the local electronic state of metal center. However, the large electronegativity of N atoms in Metal-N4 restricts the electron transfer between center metal atom and peroxymonosulfate. Herein, we constructed Fe-SN-C catalyst by incorporating S atom in the first coordination sphere of Fe single-atom site (Fe-S1N3) for Fenton-like catalysis. The Fe-SN-C with a low valent Fe is found to exhibit excellent catalytic activity for bisphenol A degradation, and the corresponding rate constant reaches 0.405 min-1, 11.9-fold higher than the original Fe-N-C. Besides, the Fe-SN-C/PMS system exhibits ideal catalytic stability under the effect of wide pH range and background substrates by the fast generation of high-valent Fe species. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the dual coordination of S and N atoms notably increases the local electron density of Fe atoms and electron filling in eg orbital, causing a d band center shifting close to the fermi level and thereby optimizes the activation energy for peroxymonosulfate decomposition via Fe 3d-O 2p orbital interaction. This work provides further development of promising SACs for the efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate based on direct regulation of the coordination environment of active center metal atoms.

Selective electrophilic attack towards organic micropollutants with superior Fenton-like activity by biochar-supported cobalt single-atom catalyst

The global shortage of freshwater and inadequate supply of clean water have necessitated the implementation of robust technologies for wastewater purification, and Fenton-like chemistry is a highly-promising approach. However, realizing the rapid Fenton-like chemistry for high-efficiency degradation of organic micropollutants (OMs) remains challenging. Herein, one novel system was constructed by a Co single-atom catalyst activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and the optimal system (SA-Co-NBC-0.2/PMS) achieved unprecedented catalytic performance towards a model OM [Iohexol (IOH)], i.e., almost 100% decay ratio in only 10 min (the observed rate constant: 0.444 min-1) with high electrophilic species 1O2 (singlet oxygen) generation. Theoretical calculations unveiled that Co-N4 sites preferred to adsorb the terminal-O of PMS (more negative adsorption energy than other O sites: -32.67 kcal/mol), promoting the oxidation of PMS to generate 1O2. Iodine (I)23 (0.1097), I24 (0.1154) and I25 (0.0898) on IOH with higher f- electrophilic values were thus identified as the main attack sites. Furthermore, 16S ribosomal RNA high-throughput sequencing and quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis illustrated the environmentally-benign property of the SA-Co-NBC-0.2 and the tapering ecological risk during IOH degradation process. Significantly, this work comprehensively checked the competence of the SA-Co-NBC-0.2/PMS system for organics abatement in practical wastewater.

Understanding the Distance Effect of the Single-Atom Active Sites in Fenton-Like Reactions for Efficient Water Remediation

Emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising in water remediation through Fenton-like reactions. Despite the notable enhancement of catalytic activity through increasing the density of single-atom active sites, the performance improvement is not solely attributed to the increase in the number of active sites. The variation of catalytic behaviors stemming from the increased atomic density is particularly elusive and deserves an in-depth study. Herein, single-atom Fe catalysts (FeSA-CN) with different distances (dsite) between the adjacent single-atom Fe sites are constructed by controlling Fe loading. With the decrease in dsite value, remarkably enhanced catalytic activity of FeSA-CN is realized via the electron transfer regime with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The decrease in dsite value promotes electronic communication and further alters the electronic structure in favor of PMS activation. Moreover, the two adjacent single-atom Fe sites collectively adsorb PMS and achieve single-site desorption of the PMS decomposition products, maintaining continuous PMS activation and contaminant removal. Moreover, the FeSA-CN/PMS system exhibits excellent anti-interference performance for various aquatic systems and good durability in continuous-flow experiments, indicating its great potential for water treatment applications. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the distance effect of single-atom active sites on water remediation by designing densely populated SACs.

Solvent-free synthesis of foam board-like CoSe2 alloy to selectively generate singlet oxygen via peroxymonosulfate activation for sulfadiazine degradation

Singlet oxygen (1O2) is a highly effective reactive species in selectively oxidizing organic pollutants. However, it is still challenging to rationally design robust catalysts for the selective generation of 1O2. Herein, the coordination and engineering architecture of the foam board-like CoSe2 alloy were facilely constructed through a green solvent-free method and displayed almost 100% 1O2 production selectivity. The CoSe2 alloy showed excellent catalytic ability for the efficient and fast removal of organic pollutants via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation compared with previously reported cobalt-based catalysts. The CoSe2/PMS system exhibited strong resistance for a broad pH range (3.0-11.0) and various coexisting inorganic ions owing to the advantage of the strong bonding of Co-Se in CoSe2 alloy. Mechanism studies revealed that 1O2 was the only reactive oxygen species in the CoSe2/PMS system. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that Co was the dominant adsorption site for PMS in CoSe2, and the production pathway of 1O2 was PMS* → *OH → *O → 1O2. In addition, it was proved that *OH and *O served as the rate-determining steps for the formation of 1O2 by PMS activation on CoSe2 alloy. These findings provide a rational strategy for preparing a series of low-cost transition metal-based alloy catalysts for PMS activation to achieve high-efficiency 1O2 production in the elimination of organic pollutants.

Precise coordination of high-loading Fe single atoms with sulfur boosts selective generation of nonradicals

Nonradicals are effective in selectively degrading electron-rich organic contaminants, which unfortunately suffer from unsatisfactory yield and uncontrollable composition due to the competitive generation of radicals. Herein, we precisely construct a local microenvironment of the carbon nitride-supported high-loading (~9 wt.%) Fe single-atom catalyst (Fe SAC) with sulfur via a facile supermolecular self-assembly strategy. Short-distance S coordination boosts the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and selectively generates high-valent iron-oxo species (FeIV=O) along with singlet oxygen (1O2), significantly increasing the 1O2 yield, PMS utilization, and p-chlorophenol reactivity by 6.0, 3.0, and 8.4 times, respectively. The composition of nonradicals is controllable by simply changing the S content. In contrast, long-distance S coordination generates both radicals and nonradicals, and could not promote reactivity. Experimental and theoretical analyses suggest that the short-distance S upshifts the d-band center of the Fe atom, i.e., being close to the Fermi level, which changes the binding mode between the Fe atom and O site of PMS to selectively generate 1O2 and FeIV=O with a high yield. The short-distance S-coordinated Fe SAC exhibits excellent application potential in various water matrices. These findings can guide the rational design of robust SACs toward a selective and controllable generation of nonradicals with high yield and PMS utilization.

Fenton-like activity and pathway modulation via single-atom sites and pollutants comediates the electron transfer process

The studies on the origin of versatile oxidation pathways toward targeted pollutants in the single-atom catalysts (SACs)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems were always associated with the coordination structures rather than the perspective of pollutant characteristics, and the analysis of mechanism commonality is lacking. In this work, a variety of single-atom catalysts (M-SACs, M: Fe, Co, and Cu) were fabricated via a pyrolysis process using lignin as the complexation agent and substrate precursor. Sixteen kinds of commonly detected pollutants in various references were selected, and their lnkobs values in M-SACs/PMS systems correlated well (R2 = 0.832 to 0.883) with their electrophilic indexes (reflecting the electron accepting/donating ability of the pollutants) as well as the energy gap (R2 = 0.801 to 0.840) between the pollutants and M-SACs/PMS complexes. Both the electron transfer process (ETP) and radical pathways can be significantly enhanced in the M-SACs/PMS systems, while radical oxidation was overwhelmed by the ETP oxidation toward the pollutants with lower electrophilic indexes. In contrast, pollutants with higher electrophilic indexes represented the weaker electron-donating capacity to the M-SACs/PMS complexes, which resulted in the weaker ETP oxidation accompanied with noticeable radical oxidation. In addition, the ETP oxidation in different M-SACs/PMS systems can be regulated via the energy gaps between the M-SACs/PMS complexes and pollutants. As a result, the Fenton-like activities in the M-SACs/PMS systems could be well modulated by the reaction pathways, which were determined by both electrophilic indexes of pollutants and single-atom sites. This work provided a strategy to establish PMS-based AOP systems with tunable oxidation capacities and pathways for high-efficiency organic decontamination.

Electron Delocalization Realizes Speedy Fenton-Like Catalysis over a High-Loading and Low-Valence Zinc Single-Atom Catalyst

A zinc (Zn)-based single-atom catalyst (SAC) is recently reported as an active Fenton-like catalyst; however, the low Zn loading greatly restricts its catalytic activity. Herein, a molecule-confined pyrolysis method is demonstrated to evidently increase the Zn loading to 11.54 wt.% for a Zn SAC (ZnSA -N-C) containing a mixture of Zn-N4 and Zn-N3 coordination structures. The latter unsaturated Zn-N3 sites promote electron delocalization to lower the average valence state of Zn in the mix-coordinated Zn-Nx moiety conducive to interaction of ZnSA -N-C with peroxydisulfate (PDS). A speedy Fenton-like catalysis is thus realized by the high-loading and low-valence ZnSA -N-C for PDS activation with a specific activity up to 0.11 min L-1 m-2 , outstripping most Fenton-like SACs. Experimental results reveal that the formation of ZnSA -N-C-PDS* complex owing to the strong affinity of ZnSA -N-C to PDS empowers intense direct electron transfer from the electron-rich pollutant toward this complex, dominating the rapid bisphenol A (BPA) elimination. The electron transfer pathway benefits the desirable environmental robustness of the ZnSA -N-C/PDS system for actual water decontamination. This work represents a new class of efficient and durable Fenton-like SACs for potential practical environmental applications.

Vacuum ultraviolet irradiation for reduction of the toxicity of wastewater towards mammalian cells: Removal mechanism, changes in organic compounds, and toxicity alternatives

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV, 185 + 254 nm) irradiation performs well for oxidation of model pollutants. However, oxidation of pollutants does not necessarily lead to a reduction in toxicity. Currently, a comprehensive understanding of the effect of VUV irradiation on the toxicity of real wastewater is still lacking. In this study, the influence of VUV irradiation on the toxicity of secondary effluents to Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells was investigated. The induction units of endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 8-hydroxyguanosine (8-OHdG) in cells continuously decreased with prolonged irradiation time. After 36 min of irradiation, the cytotoxicity and the genotoxicity of the secondary effluents were reduced by 57%-63% and 56%-61%, respectively. The UV (254 nm), •OH, and other substances generated during the VUV irradiation directly drive toxicity changes of wastewater. The contribution of •OH generated during VUV irradiation to the reductions in cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the secondary effluents reached 72%-78% and 77%-84%, respectively. Hydroxyl radicals generated during VUV irradiation played an important role in the detoxification. The relative signal intensity of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) > 500 Da was partially removed, whereas that of DOC < 500 Da was small changed. Since the content of DOC > 500 Da in the samples was much lower than that of DOC < 500 Da, the removal of total DOC was only 15.8%-20.0% after 36 min of irradiation. The UV254 values and the fluorescence intensity values for different molecular weights (MWs) were all reduced effectively by VUV irradiation. Electron-rich organic compounds of all MWs were all sensitive to VUV irradiation. There were mono-linear relationships between changes in chemical indexes and changes in cytotoxicity or genotoxicity. The total fluorescence intensity (Ex: 220-420 nm, Em: 280-560 nm) was identified as the best indicator of the reduction in toxicity.

Self-carbon-thermal-reduction strategy for boosting the Fenton-like activity of single Fe-N4 sites by carbon-defect engineering

Carbon-defect engineering in metal single-atom catalysts by simple and robust strategy, boosting their catalytic activity, and revealing the carbon defect-catalytic activity relationship are meaningful but challenging. Herein, we report a facile self-carbon-thermal-reduction strategy for carbon-defect engineering of single Fe-N4 sites in ZnO-Carbon nano-reactor, as efficient catalyst in Fenton-like reaction for degradation of phenol. The carbon vacancies are easily constructed adjacent to single Fe-N4 sites during synthesis, facilitating the formation of C-O bonding and lowering the energy barrier of rate-determining-step during degradation of phenol. Consequently, the catalyst Fe-NCv-900 with carbon vacancies exhibits a much improved activity than the Fe-NC-900 without abundant carbon vacancies, with 13.5 times improvement in the first-order rate constant of phenol degradation. The Fe-NCv-900 shows high activity (97% removal ratio of phenol in only 5 min), good recyclability and the wide-ranging pH universality (pH range 3-9). This work not only provides a rational strategy for improving the Fenton-like activity of metal single-atom catalysts, but also deepens the fundamental understanding on how periphery carbon environment affects the property and performance of metal-N4 sites.

Target-prepared sludge biochar-derived synergistic Mn and N/O induces high-performance periodate activation for reactive iodine radicals generation towards ofloxacin degradation

Converting waste activated sludge into catalysts for the removal of antibiotics in water fulfils the dual purpose of waste-to-resource and hazardous pollution elimination. In this study, sludge-derived biochar (SDB) for efficient periodate (PI) activation was first prepared via one-step pyrolysis of potassium permanganate-polyhexamethylenebiguanide conditioned sludge without additional modification. The SDB (750 °C)-PI system degraded 100% ofloxacin (OFL, 41.5 μM) within 6 min and was almost undisturbed by inorganic ions or humic acids. The experimental results confirmed that the predominant role of reactive iodine species (RIS) and the auxiliary involvement of singlet oxygen (1O2) jointly contributed to the OFL degradation. Theoretical calculations further indicated that the synergy between Mn and N/O induced local charge redistribution and improved electron transfer capability of SDB, leading to the formation of electron-rich Mn sites and enhanced Mn(II)↔Mn(III)↔Mn(IV) redox to promote PI activation. More importantly, the enhanced adsorption and charge transfer of PI on the Mn site of the Mn-N/O-C structures induced the I-O bond stretching and the rapid generation of RIS. This study offered a cost-effective strategy for developing SDB-based catalysts, further advancing the comprehension of sludge management and the intricate mechanisms underlying RIS formation in PI-advanced oxidation processes.

A green edge-hosted zinc single-site heterogeneous catalyst for superior Fenton-like activity

Developing green heterogeneous catalysts with excellent Fenton-like activity is critical for water remediation technologies. However, current catalysts often rely on toxic transitional metals, and their catalytic performance is far from satisfactory as alternatives of homogeneous Fenton-like catalysts. In this study, a green catalyst based on Zn single-atom was prepared in an ammonium atmosphere using ZIF-8 as a precursor. Multiple characterization analyses provided evidence that abundant intrinsic defects due to the edge sites were created, leading to the formation of a thermally stable edge-hosted Zn-N4 single-atom catalyst (ZnN4-Edge). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the edge sites equipped the single-atom Zn with a super catalytic performance, which not only promoted decomposition of peroxide molecule (HSO5-) but also greatly lowered the activation barrier for •OH generation. Consequently, the as-prepared ZnN4-Edge exhibited extremely high Fenton-like performance in oxidation and mineralization of phenol as a representative organic contaminant in a wide range of pH, realizing its quick detoxification. The atom-utilization efficiency of the ZnN4-Edge was ~104 higher than an equivalent amount of the control sample without edge sites (ZnN4), and the turnover frequency was ~103 times of the typical benchmark of homogeneous catalyst (Co2+). This study opens up a revolutionary way to rationally design and optimize heterogeneous catalysts to homogeneous catalytic performance for Fenton-like application.

In situ electrogenerated Cu(III) triggers hydroxyl radical production on the Cu-Sb-SnO2 electrode for highly efficient water decontamination

The electrochemical oxidation process has the unique advantage of in-situ •OH generation for deep mineralization of organic pollutants, which is expected to provide a solution for the globally decentralized wastewater treatment and reuse. However, it is still a great challenge to develop low-cost anodes with ultrahigh •OH yield and low energy consumption. Here, a low-cost and stable mixed metal oxide (MMO) anode (Cu-Sb-SnO2) developed by a simple and scalable preparation process presents extremely high organic pollutants degradation efficiency and low energy consumption. The tetracycline degradation kinetics constant of the Cu-Sb-SnO2 system (0.362 min-1) was 9 to 45 times higher than that of other prepared anodes, which is superior to the existing anodes reported so far. The experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that the Cu-Sb-SnO2 has moderate oxygen evolution potential, larger water adsorption energy, and lower reaction energy barrier, which is conducive to selective water oxidation to generate •OH. Notably, it is systematically and comprehensively confirmed that the generation of •OH triggered by in situ electrogenerated Cu(III) increased •OH steady-state concentration by over four times. Furthermore, the doped Cu species can play a key role in promoting charge transfer as an "electronic porter" between Sn and Sb in the electrocatalytic process by adjusting the electronic structure of the Sb-SnO2 electrode. This work paves the way for the development of MMO anodes utilizing the advantage of the Cu redox shuttle.
