Chromosome abnormalities and sister chromatid exchanges in children with acute intoxication due to inhalation of volatile substances

Increased frequency of chromosomal aberrations in railroad car painters

The purpose of this study was to determine if exposure to paints and solvents contributes to chromosomal alterations in occupationally exposed individuals. A total of 25 male railroad and underground railroad car painters were studied. This group had a mean age of 32.7 y and a mean exposure time of 5.2 y. The results were compared with those obtained for 25 healthy (unexposed) males. The scoring of structural chromosome aberrations clearly revealed an increase in the number of all types of aberrations considered in the population of painters. This suggests that exposure to a combination of chemicals may increase genotoxicity in industrial workers.

Reproductive hazards of fire fighting. II. Chemical hazards

Studies of the health of fire fighters have historically focused on non-malignant respiratory disease and cancer. More recently, concerns have surfaced about reproductive health effects in many areas of the workforce, including fire fighting. These concerns prompted this review of chemical exposures that may contribute to adverse reproductive health outcomes in male as well as female fire fighters. A review of the industrial hygiene literature was undertaken to identify agents commonly found in fire smoke. These agents were then examined for evidence of reproductive toxicity or mutagenicity/carcinogenicity. This profile of chemical agents and their reproductive toxicities permits a qualitative determination that fire fighters are exposed to potential reproductive toxicants as a part of their normal fire fighting duties. Considerations for mitigating these risks are also discussed.

Sister chromatid exchanges in peripheral lymphocytes of workers exposed to benzene, trichloroethylene, or tetrachloroethylene, with reference to smoking habits

The frequencies of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) were studied in peripheral lymphocytes from four groups of solvent workers, i.e. 36 nonsmoking women exposed to benzene at about 50 ppm on the average, 38 men and women (male smokers and nonsmokers, and female nonsmokers) exposed to trichloroethylene (TRI) at 7 ppm, 27 men and women (both smokers and non-smokers) with tetrachloroethylene (TETRA) exposure, and 19 workers (both smokers and nonsmokers in men, and nonsmokers in women) exposed to a mixture of TRI (at 8 ppm) and TETRA (at 17 ppm) (TRI + TETRA). The results were compared with the findings in control subjects matched by age, sex, smoking habits and place of residence. No significant increase in SCE frequencies was observed in association with exposure to benzene, TRI, TETRA or TRI + TETRA. The SCE frequency was, however, significantly higher in the TRI-, TETRA- or TRI + TETRA-exposed smoking men than in the concurrent nonsmoking controls of the same sex. Possible synergism between solvent exposure and smoking is discussed.
