Risks to UK beekeeping from the parasitic miteTropilaelaps clareaeand the small hive beetle,Aethina tumida

First Report of Insecticide Resistance to Organophosphates and Pyrethroids in the Small Hive Beetle (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and Development of a Resistance Monitoring Technique

The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), is a serious threat to the honey bee industry, which relies on chemicals for the control of major honey bee pests. We developed a glass vial bioassay for resistance monitoring of adult A. tumida populations in honey bee colonies. We also determined concentrations that could be used to discriminate between susceptible and resistant strains. These include the pyrethroids cypermethrin (25.0 μg per vial) and fluvalinate (25.0 μg per vial) and the organophosphates malathion (10.0 μg per vial), chlorpyrifos (2.5 μg per vial), and coumaphos (25.0 μg per vial). Here, we report that resistance to fluvalinate and coumaphos was widespread in A. tumida populations in Florida in 2019. Aethina tumida populations were still susceptible to cypermethrin, malathion, and chlorpyrifos. The levels of resistance differed between pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides. Over the last 10 yr, A. tumida populations have developed 43.7-fold resistance to coumaphos and 5.4-fold to fluvalinate. The levels of insecticide resistance were not similar within insecticides in the same class, which suggest that this type of resistance is manageable. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of glass vial bioassays to detect resistance in adult A. tumida and provide the foundation for a resistance management strategy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of insecticide resistance in small hive beetle populations and suggests an urgent need for alternative control strategies for these serious pests of honey bee colonies.

Tropilaelaps mite: an emerging threat to European honey bee

The risk of transmission of honey bee parasites has increased substantially as a result of trade globalization and technical developments in transportation efficacy. Great concern over honey bee decline has accelerated research on newly emerging bee pests and parasites. These organisms are likely to emerge from Asia as it is the only region where all 10 honey bee species co-occur. Varroa destructor, an ectoparasitic mite, is a classic example of a pest that has shifted from A. cerana, a cavity nesting Asian honey bee to A. mellifera, the European honey bee. In this review, we will describe the potential risks to global apiculture of the global expansion of Tropilaelaps mercedesae, originally a parasite of the open-air nesting Asian giant honey bee, compared to the impact of V. destructor.

Demographics of the European apicultural industry

Over the last few years, many European and North American countries have reported a high rate of disorders (mortality, dwindling and disappearance) affecting honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera). Although beekeeping has become an increasingly professional activity in recent years, the beekeeping industry remains poorly documented in Europe. The European Union Reference Laboratory for Honeybee Health sent a detailed questionnaire to each Member State, in addition to Kosovo and Norway, to determine the demographics and state of their beekeeping industries. Based on data supplied by the National Reference Laboratory for honeybee diseases in each European country, a European database was created to describe the beekeeping industry including the number and types of beekeepers, operation size, industry production, and health (notifiable diseases, mortalities). The total number of beekeepers in Europe was estimated at 620,000. European honey production was evaluated at around 220,000 tons in 2010. The price of honey varied from 1.5 to 40 €/kg depending on the country and on the distribution network. The estimated colony winter mortality varied from 7 to 28% depending on the country and the origin of the data (institutional survey or beekeeping associations). This survey documents the high heterogeneity of the apicultural industry within the European Union. The high proportion of non-professional beekeepers and the small mean number of colonies per beekeeper were the only common characteristics at European level. The tremendous variation in European apicultural industries has implication for any comprehensive epidemiological or economic analysis of the industry. This variability needs to be taken into account for such analysis as well as for future policy development. The industry would be served if beekeeping registration was uniformly implemented across member states. Better information on the package bee and queen production would help in understanding the ability of the industry to replace lost honey bee stocks.
