The vibration of inclined backrests: perception and discomfort of vibration applied parallel to the back in the z-axis of the body

Vibration reduction of human body biodynamic response in sitting posture under vibration environment by seat backrest support

Four-degree-of-freedom (4-DOF) human-chair coupling models are constructed to characterize the different contact modes between the head, chest back, waist back and backrest. The seat-to-head transfer ratio (STHT) is used as an evaluation metric for vibration reduction effectiveness. The simulated vibration reduction ratio of the model is close to the experimental results, which proves the validity of the model. The peak STHT is obviously reduced (P < 0.05, T-test) with seat-backrest support. The experiments show that supporting the head ( a 1 , P < 0.05, Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed ranks) has the best vibration reduction effect (21%), supporting the chest back ( a 2 , P < 0.05) has a reduced effect (11%), and supporting the waist back ( a 3 , P < 0.05) has the weakest effect (4%). When the upper torso is in full contact with the backrest, the peak STHT curve and resonance frequency are positively correlated with the contact stiffness of the seat surface and negatively correlated with the contact damping. In order to reduce the seat-to-head transfer ratio, the lowest STHT peak and lowest total energy judgments were proposed as the selection methods for the selection of the contact stiffness and damping of the backrest in two environments (periodic and non-periodic excitation), respectively.

Dynamic interaction between the human body and the seat during vertical vibration: effect of inclination of the seat pan and the backrest on seat transmissibilities

Seat inclinations at the seat pan and backrest may affect the sitting comfort. This study was designed to quantify the effect of inclination of a seat pan (0°, 10°, and 20°) and backrest (0°, 15°, and 30°), either foamed or rigid, on the transmissibilities measured at the seat pan and backrest. Seat transmissibilities were measured with fifteen subjects exposed to vertical random vibration between 1 and 15 Hz at 0.5 ms^-2 r.m.s. It was found the resonance frequencies in transmissibilities measured at the seat pan and backrest increased with increasing the backrest inclination but were not affected by the seat pan angle. Increasing the foamed backrest inclination increased the peak transmissibilities. Inclination of the rigid seat pan or the rigid backrest reduced the transmissibilities measured at the backrest or the seat pan, respectively. Transmissibilities were more significantly affected by the backrest inclination than the seat pan inclination. Practitioner summary: Seat inclinations may alter the human-seat dynamic interaction and hence the riding discomfort. This study was designed to quantify the effect of inclined seats, either foamed or rigid, on the transmissibilities. It was found the backrest angle affected the transmissibilities more strongly than the seat pan angle.

Health effects associated with occupational exposure to hand-arm or whole body vibration

Workers in a number of different occupational sectors are exposed to workplace vibration on a daily basis. This exposure may arise through the use of powered-hand tools or hand-transmitted vibration (HTV). Workers might also be exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) by driving delivery vehicles, earth moving equipment, or through use of tools that generate vibration at low dominant frequencies and high amplitudes, such as jackhammers. Occupational exposure to vibration has been associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal pain in the back, neck, hands, shoulders, and hips. Occupational exposure may also contribute to the development of peripheral and cardiovascular disorders and gastrointestinal problems. In addition, there are more recent data suggesting that occupational exposure to vibration may enhance the risk of developing certain cancers. The aim of this review is to provide an assessment of the occupations where exposure to vibration is most prevalent, and a description of the adverse health effects associated with occupational exposure to vibration. This review will examine (1) various experimental methods used to measure and describe the characteristics of vibration generated by various tools and vehicles, (2) the etiology of vibration-induced disorders, and (3) how these data were employed to assess and improve intervention strategies and equipment that reduces the transmission of vibration to the body. Finally, there is a discussion of the research gaps that need to be investigated to further reduction in the incidence of vibration-induced illnesses and injuries.

Discomfort of seated persons exposed to low frequency lateral and roll oscillation: Effect of backrest height

Backrests influence the comfort of seated people. With 21 subjects sitting with three backrest heights (no backrest, short backrest, high backrest) discomfort caused by lateral, roll, and fully roll-compensated lateral oscillation was investigated at frequencies between 0.25 and 1.0 Hz. With lateral oscillation, the short backrest reduced discomfort at frequencies less than 0.63 Hz and the high backrest reduced discomfort at frequencies less than 1.0 Hz. With roll oscillation, the high backrest reduced discomfort at frequencies less than 0.63 Hz, but increased discomfort at 1.0 Hz. With fully roll-compensated lateral oscillation, the short backrest reduced discomfort at 0.4 Hz and the high backrest reduced discomfort at 0.5 and 0.63 Hz. As predicted by current standards, a backrest can increase discomfort caused by high frequencies of vibration. However, a backrest can reduce discomfort caused by low frequencies, with the benefit depending on the frequency and direction of oscillation and backrest height.

Effect of reclining a seat on the discomfort from vibration and shock on fast boats

Passengers and crew on fast boats can experience high magnitudes of whole-body vibration and mechanical shocks that may present risks to health and cause discomfort. This study investigated the influence of reclining a seat on the discomfort caused by fast-boat motion and whether discomfort can be predicted by overall ride values according to current standards. Subjects judged the discomfort of simulations of a recorded fast boat motion in a seat reclined by 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, or 60°. Reclining the seat caused no significant change in overall discomfort, suggesting that if a reclined seat can be shown to reduce risks of injury it may be acceptable in respect of comfort. The findings are inconsistent with the predictions of standards and show that revised frequency weightings are required to account for seat pan or seat back inclination.

PRACTITIONER SUMMARY

Contrary to predictions of current standards, reclining a seat may not increase discomfort during fast-boat motion. Revised frequency weightings for evaluating the severity of whole-body vibration are required to account for seat pan or seat back inclination.

Equivalent comfort contours for vertical seat vibration: effect of vibration magnitude and backrest inclination

This study determined how backrest inclination and the frequency and magnitude of vertical seat vibration influence vibration discomfort. Subjects experienced vertical seat vibration at frequencies in the range 2.5-25 Hz at vibration magnitudes in the range 0.016-2.0 ms(-2) r.m.s. Equivalent comfort contours were determined with five backrest conditions: no backrest, and with a stationary backrest inclined at 0° (upright), 30°, 60° and 90°. Within all conditions, the frequency of greatest sensitivity to acceleration decreased with increasing vibration magnitude. Compared to an upright backrest, around the main resonance of the body, the vibration magnitudes required to cause similar discomfort were 100% greater with 60° and 90° backrest inclinations and 50% greater with a 30° backrest inclination. It is concluded that no single frequency weighting provides an accurate prediction of the discomfort caused by vertical seat vibration at all magnitudes and with all backrest conditions.

PRACTITIONER SUMMARY

Vertical seat vibration is a main cause of vibration discomfort for drivers and passengers of road vehicles. A frequency weighting has been standardised for the evaluation of vertical seat vibration when sitting upright but it was not known whether this weighting is suitable for the reclined sitting postures often adopted during travel.
