Does Amount of Information Support Aesthetic Values?

Obtaining information from the world is important for survival. The brain, therefore, has special mechanisms to extract as much information as possible from sensory stimuli. Hence, given its importance, the amount of available information may underlie aesthetic values. Such information-based aesthetic values would be significant because they would compete with others to drive decision-making. In this article, we ask, "What is the evidence that amount of information support aesthetic values?" An important concept in the measurement of informational volume is entropy. Research on aesthetic values has thus used Shannon entropy to evaluate the contribution of quantity of information. We review here the concepts of information and aesthetic values, and research on the visual and auditory systems to probe whether the brain uses entropy or other relevant measures, specially, Fisher information, in aesthetic decisions. We conclude that information measures contribute to these decisions in two ways: first, the absolute quantity of information can modulate aesthetic preferences for certain sensory patterns. However, the preference for volume of information is highly individualized, with information-measures competing with organizing principles, such as rhythm and symmetry. In addition, people tend to be resistant to too much entropy, but not necessarily, high amounts of Fisher information. We show that this resistance may stem in part from the distribution of amount of information in natural sensory stimuli. Second, the measurement of entropic-like quantities over time reveal that they can modulate aesthetic decisions by varying degrees of surprise given temporally integrated expectations. We propose that amount of information underpins complex aesthetic values, possibly informing the brain on the allocation of resources or the situational appropriateness of some cognitive models.

Spilling over Strain between Elders and Their Caregivers in Hong Kong

According to the dialectical model, the well-being of the older care recipient, the informal caregiver, and the professional care provider mutually affect each other. Particularly, the caregiver's strain can affect the care recipient's well-being both positively and negatively. Moreover, the task-specific model suggests that as social workers are responsible for maintaining elders' well-being, the workers' strain would be particularly influential on the elders' well-being. To clarify these dialectic relationships, the present study surveyed the three parties involved in home help or home care services in Hong Kong over two successive waves using a panel design. This study reveals the significant negative effect the professional care provider's earlier strain has on the elder's later well-being. Moreover, the social worker's earlier strain was particularly detrimental to the elder's later well-being. In contrast, the effect of the informal caregiver's earlier strain was not significant. Additionally, the elder's well-being had no significant impact on the strain of either the professional care provider or the informal caregiver. Findings of this study support the qualification of the dialectical model by the task-specific model to yield a model of channeled spillover. Accordingly, dialectical influence requires a channel to materialize the spillover effect.

Quality of life in old age - a concept analysis

AIM

To identify existing definitions of quality of life in old age and to determine the most suitable for evaluating outcomes of nursing care for older adults.

BACKGROUND

Promoting quality of life is a central concern of nursing care for older persons. There is, however, a lack of clarity about the meaning of this concept. Attributes of quality of life are often confused with those factors influencing them.

DESIGN

Concept analysis according to Walker and Avant.

METHOD

A search was carried out in the databases MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO(®) and Gerolit for the years 1992-2013. Excerpts dealing with definitions, antecedents, consequences and empirical referents of the concept were compiled.

RESULTS

Three basic concepts for quality of life were identified: satisfying life conditions, subjective general well-being and subjective fulfilment of dimensions of human life.

DISCUSSION

Satisfying life conditions are antecedent to the other concepts. It is not suitable to view such conditions as an outcome of nursing care for older adults because an outcome has to be a consequence. General well-being is likely to remain stable over time and changing conditions due to adaptation taking place. Fulfilment of dimensions of human life as a multidimensional inner state may be more sensitive to changing conditions.

CONCLUSION

Fulfilment of dimensions of human life is the most suitable definition of quality of life in old age as an outcome of nursing care. Studies are needed to decide whether it is responsive to changing circumstances.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Fulfilment of dimensions of human life should be assessed to provide care that meets the needs of clients.

Reciprocal influences between burnout and effectiveness in professional care for elders

In community care, the quality of life of the care recipient and the quality of the care provider affect each other. This is a proposition derived from the dialectical perspective, which envisions the importance of promoting the quality of life of both the care recipient and provider. The proposition hinges on mediation by caring effectiveness. This mediation model is the focus of the present study. This study surveyed 232 dyads of Hong Kong Chinese older care recipients and their professional care providers in two waves. Psychological well-being and functional disability were the indicators of the quality of life of care recipients, whereas burnout was an indicator of the low quality of life of professional care providers. The results reinforce the mediation model by showing that caring effectiveness mediates the impact of the earlier burnout of the professional care provider on the subsequent psychological well-being of the care recipient. In turn, the earlier psychological well-being and functional disability of the care recipient also affect the burnout of the professional care provider. The results support the dialectical perspective.

Dimensions of oral health-related quality of life in an adult Swedish population

The concept of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) is investigated in this study. The aim was to explore the dimensionality of variables measuring OHRQOL in an adult Swedish population and to discuss the findings in relation to existing indices. The study was based on responses to a 1998 questionnaire sent to a random sample of 1974 persons aged between 50 and 75 years. There were 22 variables based on questions concerning oral situation and the impact on 7 theoretically different dimensions of QOL. The majority were satisfied with their oral health situation. During the previous 12 months, 16% of the population had experienced problems with their mouth or teeth on at least one occasion per mouth. Principal components analysis was used to analyze the dimensionality of the variables. Three factors accounted for 59% of the variance: (1) Physical and social disability, (2) psychological discomfort and disability, and (3) functional limitation and physical pain. The perception of OHRQOL is multidimensional, but the dimensions are not equally important. The dimensions of OHRQOL found in the present study are similar to those of existing instruments.
