A note on the speed-amplitude function in movement control

Vertical-horizontal illusory effects with gaze restrictions do not change length estimations using the lower limb

Gaze direction and use of visual feedback can affect illusory influences over perceptions and manual length size estimates of the vertical-horizontal (V-H) illusion, in which the vertical, bisecting segment of an inverted T (IT) appears longer than the horizontal, bisected segment. We questioned whether V-H illusory influences would also exist for the lower limb. Participants stepped forward in an attempt to make the toe-to-toe distance of their dominant foot equal to a short or long bisecting segment length of a vertically projected IT. Performances under three gaze conditions included: maintaining gaze on the IT intersection throughout a trial for target fixation (TF); viewing the intersection for 4 s then looking down and performing the step for movement fixation (MF); and viewing the intersection for 4 s then maintaining gaze on the remembered location of the intersection and performing the step for remembered target fixation (RTF). Variables included step displacement, peak velocity (PV), and normalized ground reaction force amplitude (GRFampN), as well as time to peak and peak amplitude of the center of pressure (COPtime and COPamp, respectively). Main effects of gaze on PV, GRFampN, COPtime, and COPamp revealed lower values for MF compared to TF and RTF, which did not exist for step displacement. No significant correlations existed between step displacement and other variables across participants. Together, we found evidence to suggest differences between movement planning and movement completion. Exploitation of deceptive visual cues can guide step planning and early step execution, but do not guide final step estimations.

Cortical contribution to motor process before and after movement onset

PURPOSE

This study determined the cortical areas contributing to the process of the reaction time (RT), movement time, onset-peak time, peak velocity and amplitude of the movement.

METHODS

Eighteen healthy right-handed humans abducted the left index finger in response to a start cue with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

RESULTS

There was a significant and positive correlation coefficient between the peak velocity and amplitude, indicating that movement velocity increases with the size of the movement to maintain the consistent time taken for the movement. There was no significant correlation between the RT and movement time, and thus, hypothesis that those are under common motor process was not supported. The RT in the trials with TMS over the dorsal premotor cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, or posterior parietal cortex was significantly shorter than the RT in the trials with sham TMS, indicating that those areas contribute to the motor process in the RT. The onset-peak time in the trials with TMS over the posterior parietal cortex was significantly shorter than that in the trials with sham TMS, indicating that the posterior parietal cortex contributes to the motor process that determines the time taken for the acceleration phase of the movement.

CONCLUSION

The findings support a view that the cortical areas both in front of and behind the primary motor cortex contribute to the motor process before the movement onset, but the areas behind the primary motor cortex particularly contributes to the motor process during the acceleration phase of the movement.

Changes in the relationship between movement velocity and movement distance in primary focal hand dystonia

The authors examined the relationship between movement velocity and distance and the associated muscle activation patterns in 18 individuals with focal hand dystonia (FHD) compared with a control group of 18 individuals with no known neuromuscular condition. Participants performed targeted voluntary wrist and elbow flexion movements as fast as possible across 5 movement distances. Individuals with FHD were slower than controls across all distances, and this difference was accentuated for longer movements. Muscle activation patterns were triphasic in the majority of individuals with FHD, and muscle activation scaled with distance in a similar manner to controls. Cocontraction did not explain movement slowing in individuals with dystonia, but there was a trend toward underactivation of the 1st agonist burst in the dystonic group. The authors concluded that slowness is a consistent feature of voluntary movement in FHD and is present even in the absence of dystonic posturing. Underactivation of the 1st agonist burst appears to be the most likely reason to explain slowing.

Nonlinear control of movement distance at the human elbow

The kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic (EMG) patterns observed during fast, single-joint flexion movement have been widely studied as a paradigm for understanding voluntary movement. Several patterns have been described that depend upon the movement task (e.g., distance, speed, and load). A previous model that interpreted differences in EMG patterns in terms of pulse-height or pulse-width modulation of rectangular pulses of motoneuron pool excitation cannot explain all the EMG patterns reported in the literature. We proposed a more general version of that model, consisting of a set of four equations, which specify the parameters of the excitation pulses for a wide variety of movement tasks. Here we report experiments in which subjects performed fast elbow flexions over a range of distances from 2.8 degrees to 45 degrees. The EMG patterns that we observe are consistent with this more general model. We conclude that this model is sufficient to specify muscle excitation patterns that will launch a movement toward and stop it in the neighborhood of a target. This model operates on the basis of prior knowledge about the task rather than feedback received during the task.

Response Timing Accuracy as a Function of Movement Velocity and Distance

In two experiments, patterns of response error during a timing accuracy task were investigated. In Experiment 1, these patterns were examined across a full range of movement velocities, which provided a test of the hypothesis that as movement velocity increases, constant error (CE) shifts from a negative to a positive response bias, with the zero CE point occurring at approximately 50% of maximum movement velocity (Hancock & Newell, 1985). Additionally, by examining variable error (VE), timing error variability patterns over a full range of movement velocities were established. Subjects (N = 6) performed a series of forearm flexion movements requiring 19 different movement velocities. Results corroborated previous observations that variability of timing error primarily decreased as movement velocity increased from 6 to 42% of maximum velocity. Additionally, CE data across the velocity spectrum did not support the proposed timing error function. In Experiment 2, the effect(s) of responding at 3 movement distances with 6 movement velocities on response timing error were investigated. VE was significantly lower for the 3 high-velocity movements than for the 3 low-velocity movements. Additionally, when MT was mathematically factored out, VE was less at the long movement distance than at the short distance. As in Experiment 1, CE was unaffected by distance or velocity effects and the predicted CE timing error function was not evident.

Space-time accuracy of rapid movements

The space-time accuracy of an elbow flexion movement task was examined in two experiments over a range of motion extents (1 degrees through 100 degrees ) and short-duration movement times (100, 125, 150, and 400 ms). Nonlinear speed-accuracy functions emerged for both spatial and temporal error over all the movement conditions examined. The results showed that the timing error and spatial error had a high degree of complementarity as predicted by a space-time model of the speed-accuracy relation (Hancock & Newell, 1985). The findings confirm that the frame of reference for measuring movement error determines in part the error functions observed.

Timing and rate of development of tension produced by the fast voluntary contraction of the rectus femoris muscle

Tension produced by isometric contraction of the rectus femoris muscle for rapid knee extension was examined at different levels of force with five normal subjects, using an on-line method to measure the timing and the rate of development of tension. Tension began to rise about 50 msec. after onset of electromyographic activity of the rectus femoris muscle, increased most sharply at about 60 msec. after its rise, and attained maximum at about 100 msec. The rate of tension development was determined solely by the maximum tension from first 20 msec. up to 100 msec., while timing remained approximately constant regardless of the force. The result confirmed well a force-control hypothesis of maximal speed ballistic movement of a body segment that the motor centre controls the amplitude of force output when time to develop tension is invariant.
