The Effects of Context on Word Identification in Good and Poor Readers

Lexico-semantic processing in children with specific language impairment: the overactivation hypothesis

The hypothesis indicating an overactivation of the lexico-semantic network in children with specific language impairment (SLI) was tested using an auditory pair-primed paradigm (PPP), where participants made a lexical-decision on the second word of a noun pair that could be semantically related, or not, to the first one. Though children with SLI were proven to be as accurate as children matched for receptive vocabulary age, they presented a larger priming effect in the PPP in terms of both reaction time and accuracy. These results preliminarily support the hypothesis of an overactivation of the lexico-semantic network.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

As a result of reading this paper the reader will be able to (1) understand how the pair-primed paradigm can contribute to investigate the online spreading of the activation within the lexico-semantic network; (2) be aware of the fact that during development it is unlikely that some cognitive domain are completely typical (residual normality), while others develop atypically; (3) the reader will be aware that children with SLI present some subtle abnormalities in the lexico-semantic network, which appears to be overactive.

Phonological and semantic priming in children with reading disability

Lexical priming was assessed in children with reading disability (RD) and in age-matched controls (M= 11.5 years), in visual and auditory lexical decision tasks. In the visual task, children with RD were found to have deficits in semantic (SHIP-BOAT), phonological/graphemic (GOAT-BOAT), and combined (FLOAT-BOAT) priming. The same pattern of semantic priming deficits also occurred in auditory lexical decisions, suggesting that the semantic deficits are not confined to reading. Children with RD also showed less priming than reading-age matched controls, suggesting that their priming deficits are not simply due to lower reading level but are due to the reading disability in particular. These semantic deficits may contribute to both the word reading and the comprehension problems seen in children with RD.

Semantic priming effects in normal versus poor readers

The authors studied sensitivity to semantic priming, as distinct from semantic judgment, in poor readers. Association strength (high vs. low semantic association) was manipulated factorially with semantic association type (categoric vs. thematic association). Participants were 11-year-old poor readers (n = 15) who were matched with a group of chronological-age controls (n = 13), and also matched with a group of reading-age controls (n = 15). Three priming conditions were used: related, unrelated, and neutral prime. Neutral primes consisted of a row of hash marks. Related primes elicited shorter decision latencies than did unrelated primes. Neutral primes elicited the slowest responses in all groups. Poor readers showed an additional delay in the neutral prime condition. No effects of association type (categorical vs. thematic) or association strength (high vs. low) were found, nor were any relationship with reading ability found. The delayed performance of the poor readers on neutral primes is explained in terms of orthographic processing and dependency on grapheme phoneme relationships. The findings are discussed with reference to F. R. Vellutino, D. M. Scanlon, and D. Spearing's (1995) work on semantic processing and reading ability.
