The principles of Catholic social teaching: A guide for decision making from daily clinical encounters to national policy-making

Adopting a 'System of Caring' as a leadership strategy toward professionalisation within South African emergency medical services: A grounded theory

INTRODUCTION

Professionalization is a key agenda within South African prehospital care. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies continue to grapple with operationalising the process of professionalising, with a number approaches described in literature. This research presents a System of Caring developed within the context of EMS as an approach to achieving professionalization. Methods: A qualitative research design in the form of constructivist grounded theory design was used. Participants were enrolled using purposive and theoretical sampling. Data were analysed using coding procedures in a constant comparative analysis approach supported by theoretical sensitivity. Analytical diagrams consistent with grounded theory methodology were also employed, primarily in the form of inter-relational diagraphs. Results: Six main categories were established with associated coding lists. Coding lists were used to develop groups of propositions that were then abstracted to construct final analytical labels that captured the elements of the System of Caring. These elements include caring for the leaders, caring for the team, caring for the patient, caring for each other (collegial) and caring for self. The components of each element were also abstracted, and the System of Caring developed. Conclusion: While there are various well-established definitions for the term care, within the context of the perceptions of the participants of this study, care (and caring) means a combination of constructed environmental conditions and people-process practices that recognises the well-being of the people within the processes. This 'System of Caring' offers a practicable way to operationalise caring into the workforce and move toward exploring how to promote professionalism within the workforce, through a 'System of Caring'. While this may have been reasonably extrapolated before, this research allows for a poignant insight into how EMS agencies can promote professionalization within EMS systems within South Africa, through the 'System of Caring'.

Solidarity and collectivism in the context of COVID-19

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted health care, economies and societies in ways that are still being measured across the world. To control the spread of the virus, governments continue to appeal to citizens to alter their behaviours and act in the interests of the collective public good so as to protect the vulnerable. Demonstrations of collective solidarity are being consistently sought to control the spread of the virus. Catchphrases, soundbites and hashtags such as ‘we’re all in this together’, ‘stronger together’ and other messages of unity are employed, invoking the sense of a collective struggle. However, this approach is fundamentally challenged as collectivist attitudes run contrary to the individualism of neoliberal ideology, to which citizens have been subjected. This paper argues that attempting to employ the concept of solidarity is inherently challenged by the deep impact of neoliberalism in health policies and draws on the work of Durkheim to examine the concept in a context in which health care has become established as an individual responsibility. The paper will argue that a dominant private-responsibility model and an underfunded public system have eroded solidarity weakening its effectiveness in generating concerns for the collective.

Stay-at-Home Orders and the Common Good

COVID-19, also known as SARS-CoV-2, began in Wuhan, China, late November or early December, 2019 and has since spread rapidly throughout the globe, being declared a health emergency of international concern a month later and a pandemic on March 11, 2020. It is highly contagious with a death rate up to twelve times that of the flu, even higher where the healthcare systems have been strained. To reduce the spread, states have implemented stay-at-home declarations, limiting social gatherings, and closing churches. However, some have argued that churches are an "essential service" and should be reopened in order that the faithful to be able to receive the sacraments, in particular the Eucharist. I will argue that this goes against the Catholic doctrine of the common good and care for the poor and vulnerable. Summary: COVID-19 has caused a pandemic strained health care resources. In response, the US instituted stay-at-home orders which included the closing of places of worship. Within reason, this falls under the Catholic doctrine of the common good and caring for the poor and vulnerable.

Catholic Social Teaching, Theology, and Sociology: Exploring the Common Ground

Drawing on some secondary literature and using sociological perspectives, in this paper, I trace the fundamental conflict and differences between sociology and theology as academic disciplines and draw some implications on why the contributions of sociological inquiries and their empirical assessments of society and human behavior are seldom used in literature and learning materials on Catholic social teaching (CST)—a body of moral principles based on papal, conciliar, and other official Church documents on the Christian faith and social concerns. I argue that despite methodological and theoretical differences, sociology and CST’s moral theology can share a common ground in dealing with the social order: the moral theologizing of CST begins where sociologizing ends. Sociology is a necessary tool to reformulate CST’s Christian message to the constantly changing historical and social contexts and provide empirical illustrations to its moral teachings.
