Xylaria species associated with fallen leaves and petioles

BACKGROUND

Xylaria species growing on fallen leaves and petioles have not been treated systematically. One source of confusion in this group of Xylaria species has stemmed from X. filiformis, which is an ancient name published in 1805 as Sphaeria filiformis and has commonly labeled on specimen packets that contain leaf- and petiole-inhabiting Xylaria species. Here we clarified the identity of X. filiformis and distinguish it from the species that are easily confused with it, notably X. simplicissima, to which most specimens labeled as X. filiformis are referred. Our research also led us to encounter many other leaf- and petiole-inhabiting Xylaria species, prompting a comprehensive study of this group of fungi.

RESULTS

Forty-five foliicolous and caulicolous species of Xylaria were studied, including nine newly described species-X. allima, X. appendiculatoides, X. hispidipes, X. minuscula, X. neblinensis, X. spiculaticlavata, X. vermiformis, X. vittatipiliformis, and X. vittiformis; three unnamed species-X. sp. AR1741, X. sp. GS7461A, and X. sp. GS7461B; X. simplicissima, a name newly combined with Xylaria from Rhizomorpha simplicissima; and X. noduliformis and X. imminuta, which are two new replacement names, respectively, for X. maitlandii var. nuda and X. hypsipoda var. microspora. The 45 taxa can be classified into three groups by stromatal shape and conspicuousness of perithecial mounds on the stromatal surface: (i) the X. filiformis group contains 10 species, (ii) the X. phyllocharis group contains 19 species, and (iii) the X. heloidea group contains 16 species. One of the newly described or unnamed species belongs to the X. filiformis group-X. vermiformis; nine of them belong to the X. phyllocharis group-X. allima, X. appendiculatoides, Xylaria minuscula, X. neblinensis, X. sp. AR1741, X. sp. GS7461B, X. spiculaticlavata, X. vittatipiliformis, and X. vittiformis; and three of them belong to the X. heloidea group-X. hispidipes, X. imminuta, and X. sp. GS7461A.

CONCLUSION

The 45 species of Xylaria associated with fallen leaves and petioles can be identified by using the dichotomous identification key that we provided herein. It is important to note that most of the studied species are represented by only one or several specimens and many have not been recollected and cultured.

The Xylariaceae and its relatives rank as one of the best-known members of the Ascomycota. They are now well recognized for their diversity, global distribution, ecological activities and their outstanding novel metabolites with wide ranging bioactivity.

Four New Pale-Spored Species of Xylaria (Xylariaceae, Xylariales) with a Key to Worldwide Species on Fallen Fruits and Seeds

Xylaria, a large and cosmopolitan genus of Ascomycota, plays an important ecological role in forest ecology as wood-decomposers, and serve as a source of bioactive secondary metabolites. The present work concerns a survey of Xylaria from Southwest China. Four new species of Xylaria with pale-colored ascospores associated with fallen fruits and seeds are described and illustrated based on morphological and phylogenetic evidences. The phylogeny inferred from a combined dataset of ITS-RPB2-β-tubulin sequences supports these four species as distinct species. The four new taxa, namely Xylariarogersii, X. schimicola, X. theaceicola, and X. wallichii, are compared and contrasted against morphologically similar species. A dichotomous identification key to all the accepted species of Xylaria associated with fallen fruits and seeds is given.

Three new Xylaria species (Xylariaceae, Xylariales) on fallen leaves from Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park

Three new species of Xylaria on fallen leaves in Hainan Province of China are described and illustrated, based on morphological and molecular evidence. Xylariahedyosmicola is found on fallen leaves of Hedyosmumorientale and featured by thread-like stromata with a long sterile filiform apex. Phylogenetically, X.hedyosmicola is closely related to an undescribed Xylaria sp. from Hawaii Island, USA and morphologically similar to X.vagans. Xylarialindericola is found on fallen leaves of Linderarobusta and characterised by its subglobose stromata and a long filiform stipe. It is phylogenetically closely related to X.siculaf.major. Xylariapolysporicola is found on fallen leaves of Polysporahainanensis, it is distinguished by upright or prostrate stromata and ascospores sometimes with a slimy sheath or non-cellular appendages. Xylariapolysporicola is phylogenetically closely related to X.amphithele and X.ficicola. An identification key to the ten species on fallen leaves in China is given.

Fungal diversity notes 1512-1610: taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions on genera and species of fungal taxa

This article is the 14th in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein we report 98 taxa distributed in two phyla, seven classes, 26 orders and 50 families which are described and illustrated. Taxa in this study were collected from Australia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, China, Cyprus, Egypt, France, French Guiana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Laos, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. There are 59 new taxa, 39 new hosts and new geographical distributions with one new combination. An updated, accurate and timely report of fungus-host and fungus-geography is important. We also provide an updated list of fungal taxa published in the previous fungal diversity notes. In this list, erroneous taxa and synonyms are marked and corrected accordingly.

Xylaria necrophora, sp. nov., is an emerging root-associated pathogen responsible for taproot decline of soybean in the southern United States

Taproot decline (TRD) is a disease of soybean that has been reported recently from the southern United States (U.S.). Symptoms of TRD include foliar interveinal chlorosis followed by necrosis. Darkened, charcoal-colored areas of thin stromatic tissue are evident on the taproot and lateral roots along with areas of necrosis within the root and white mycelia within the pith. Upright stromata typical of Xylaria can be observed on crop debris and emerging from infested roots in fields where taproot decline is present, but these have not been determined to contain fertile perithecia. Symptomatic plant material was collected across the known range of the disease in the southern U.S., and the causal agent was isolated from roots. Four loci, ⍺-actin (ACT), β-tubulin (TUB2), the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacers (nrITS), and the RNA polymerase subunit II (RPB2), were sequenced from representative isolates. Both maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses showed consistent clustering of representative TRD isolates in a highly supported clade within the Xylaria arbuscula species complex in the "HY" clade of the family Xylariaceae, distinct from any previously described taxa. In order to understand the origin of this pathogen, we sequenced herbarium specimens previously determined to be "Xylaria arbuscula" based on morphology and xylariaceous endophytes collected in the southern U.S. Some historical specimens from U.S. herbaria collected in the southern region as saprophytes as well as a single specimen from Martinique clustered within the "TRD" clade in phylogenetic analyses, suggesting a possible shift in lifestyle. The remaining specimens that clustered within the family Xylariaceae, but outside of the "TRD" clade, are reported. Both morphological evidence and molecular evidence indicate that the TRD pathogen is a novel species, which is described as Xylaria necrophora.

Fungal diversity notes 1387-1511: taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions on genera and species of fungal taxa

This article is the 13th contribution in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein 125 taxa from four phyla, ten classes, 31 orders, 69 families, 92 genera and three genera incertae sedis are treated, demonstrating worldwide and geographic distribution. Fungal taxa described and illustrated in the present study include three new genera, 69 new species, one new combination, one reference specimen and 51 new records on new hosts and new geographical distributions. Xylaria insolita and X. subescharoidea: two newly described species collected from a termite nesting site in Hua-lien, Taiwan

BACKGROUND

A number of Xylaria species are exclusively associated with nests of macrotermitine termites. A nesting site of Odontotermes formosanus in eastern Taiwan, which is the only macrotermitine termite known on the island, had been inundated during the raining season of 2010, and hundreds of Xylaria stromata emerged from it thereafter. A thorough examination of these stromata showed that they represent a mixture of different species.

RESULTS

Five Xylaria species were identified from the stromata collected from the nesting site, including two undescribed species, which are newly described as X. insolita and X. subescharoidea herein, and three known species X. brunneovinosa, X. escharoidea, and X. furcata.

CONCLUSION

Totally, there are 28 Xylaria species growing on termite nests or ground in the world. Although O. formosanus is the only macrotermitine species known in Taiwan, the Xylaria diversity associated with its nests is fairly high; the species number has reached 12 with X. furcata, X. insolita, and X. subescharoidea added to the Taiwan mycobiota.
