Kinship and Family Support in Taiwan

By 1983, Taiwan had reached the final stage of its population transition, with both mortality and fertility at low rates. Such demographic change will increasingly affect the capacity of families to maintain their caregiving role. Due to reduced fertility, by the 21st century, many elderly persons may have few or no children available to care for them in old age. This article focuses on the family network as a potential source of support for Taiwanese elderly, using microsimulation techniques. The results indicate that the proportion of aged parents without working-age children can be expected to rise substantially. The decline in fertility that has already occurred will reduce the extent of children available to share parental support obligations and increase the support burden on individual offspring. As a result, continued dependence on children as the major form of support will leave a substantial proportion of elderly without resources and a large proportion of the younger generation with difficult financial burdens.

Marriage Squeeze and Intergenerational Support in Contemporary Rural China: Evidence from X County of Anhui Province

With China's gender imbalance and increasingly severe male marriage squeeze, patterns of intergenerational support in rural areas are likely to undergo significant change. Using data from a survey of four towns from X county in Anhui province carried out in 2008, this article analyzes the effects of sons' marital status on intergenerational support. Random-effect regression analysis shows that son's marital status has strong effects on financial support to and coresidence with parents. Compared with married sons, older unmarried sons (so-called forced bachelors) tend to provide less financial support to their parents and are more likely to live with their parents. Parents' support of sons, as well as the parents' own needs and sons' capabilities all affect the support provided by sons. These results show that both theories of exchange and altruism are simultaneously relevant in the context of the marriage squeeze of contemporary rural China.

The influence of social niche on cultural niche construction: modelling changes in belief about marriage form in Taiwan

With introduction of social niche effects into a model of cultural change, the frequency of a practice cannot predict the frequency of its underlying belief. The combination of a general model with empirical data from a specific case illustrates the importance of collaboration between modellers and field researchers, and identifies the type of quantitative data necessary for analysing case studies. Demographic data from colonial-period household registers in Taiwan document a shift in marriage form within 40 years, from a mixture of uxorilocal marriages and virilocal marriages to the latter's dominance. Ethnographic data indicate marriage-related beliefs, costs, ethnic effects and colonial policies as well as the importance of horizontal cultural transmission. We present a formal model for the effects of moral beliefs about marriage and a population economic index on the decline of uxorilocal marriage. We integrate empirical marriage rates and an estimated economic index to produce five projections of the historical frequencies of one belief. These projections demonstrate how economic development may affect a cultural niche. They also indicate the need for future research on the relationship between wealth and cultural variability, the motivational force of cultural versus social factors, and the process of cultural niche construction.

The Decline of Son Preference and Rise of Gender Indifference in Taiwan Since 1990

This study explores the change of married women's sex preference for children in Taiwan since 1990, finding that there was a substantial decline of son preference and rise of "gender indifference", defined as feeling indifferent about children's sex (as opposed to desiring an equal number of boys and girls, in which the sex of children is still a primary consideration). Results show that at the individual level female education was the strongest predictor for the preference; education was negatively associated with son preference and positively with gender indifference. Cohort difference was noticeable, too. Younger cohorts were better educated than older ones so that they were more neutral about the sex and less adherent to the traditional male preference; besides, from 1992 to 2002 there was a universal intra-cohort movement toward gender neutrality and away from son preference. When the younger cohorts gradually replaced the older ones as the main child bearers in the Taiwanese society, at the aggregate level son preference declined and gender indifference rose.

Cross-national comparison of social support structures between Taiwan and the United States

The study compares the effects of structural bases and functional elements of social support on mental health in Taiwan and the United States, using the study conducted in the United States by Lin, Ye, and Ensel (1999) as a reference. Based on a nationally representative sample of Taiwanese adults (n = 2,835), a fundamental similarity in social support structure and function between the two countries was observed. First, the structural bases of social support had a hierarchical order in their effects on depression: Binding (presence of an intimate relationship) was the strongest in reducing depression, whereas belonging (community participation) was the weakest, with bonding (social networks) in between. Regarding the functional elements, perceived social support was a better protector of mental health than actual social support, a finding in line with previous research. On the other hand, several notable differences in the structural bases and functional elements of social support between the two societies were observed, possibly due to the differential cultural and historical characteristics.

Age, period, and cohort effects on the attitude toward supporting parents in Taiwan

PURPOSE

Using the perspectives of age, period, and cohort (APC) effects, this study explored the changes in attitudes toward supporting parents in Taiwan.

DESIGN AND METHODS

Population-representative cross-sectional data taken at 1984, 1990, and 1995 from the Social Change Survey in Taiwan were synthesized. Cohort tables and multi-nominal logistic regression were used to analyze the APC effects.

RESULTS

Period and age effects were found in the change in attitudes toward supporting parents. Agreement on living with sons or children has slowly decreased. Younger persons agree more than older ones in attitudes toward parents living with their married son or children. There was a reduction in the differences among cohorts across periods. There was no demonstration of cohort effect in this study.

IMPLICATIONS

The results indicate that for married children, living with parents is no longer popular in Taiwan society. Social policy should address the unmet needs of elderly people in assistance with daily living.

Fertility decline in Taiwan: A study using parity progression ratios

Taiwan’s decline in fertility is studied by using period parity progression ratios. Levels of marriage and motherhood are found to have been high and essentially constant though the late 1980s, suggesting that the decline has been due almost entirely to declines in second and higher order-births. Families with three or more children play an important role in maintaining the current level of fertility. The level of fertility would be even lower without these families. They contributed more than one-half child per woman to the total fertility rate during most of the 1980s. Total fertility rates computed from the period parity progression ratios indicate a substantially higher level of fertility than the conventional total fertility rate; they remained above or at replacement level through 1988. A formal demographic analysis suggests that the conventional total fertility rate has been depressed by shifts in age at childbearing.
