Pediatric Anastomosing Hemangioma: Case Report and Review of Renal Vascular Tumors in Children

The case involves a 10-year-old child who underwent a left radical nephrectomy for what was believed to be a Wilms' tumor. Histopath examination indicated a benign vascular lesion, subsequently determined to be an anastomosing hemangioma of the kidney. A comparison with the previously cited pediatric patients with renal vascular tumors is provided, and the inconsistent diagnostic terminologies for these conditions are highlighted. The therapeutic implications of these predominantly benign renal tumors, in the context of the much more frequently encountered malignant neoplasms in children, are additionally discussed.

Renal Pelvic Hemangioma in a 3-Year-Old Boy: A Rare Pediatric Case Report

Renal pelvic hemangioma is a rare benign tumor that is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. In the past, there are rarely reported cases in children. Here, a case of left renal pelvic hemangioma in a 3-year-old boy managed by nephrectomy is reported.

Gross Hematuria in Infancy: A Case of Renal Hemangioma Managed Endoscopically

A case of renal hemangioma in a male infant managed endoscopically is reported. The patient initially presented at 6 months of age to a nephrology clinic with gross hematuria and was found to have what was thought to be a renal cyst. He was referred to urology clinic at 18 months after having continued gross hematuria and negative nephrology evaluation. A magnetic resonance imaging suggested an enhancing mass in the renal pelvis and hydronephrotic upper pole cyst that was mistaken as cyst on ultrasound. A 1.5 × 2.5 cm pedunculated mass in the renal pelvis was resected endoscopically and pathology was consistent with renal hemangioma. He has remained free of hematuria or sign of recurrence on magnetic resonance imaging or renal ultrasound for 9 months.

Evaluation of hematuria in children

The detection of blood in a child's urine is alarming and often prompts many laboratory studies. Hematuria is one of the most important signs of renal or bladder disease, but proteinuria often is a more important diagnostic and prognostic finding. The physician should ensure that serious conditions are not overlooked, avoid unnecessary laboratory studies, reassure the family, and provide guidelines for additional studies if there is a change in the child's course. This article provides an approach to the evaluation and management of hematuria in a child. Many tests have been recommended for the child with hematuria, but no consensus exists on a systematic evaluation.
