Does sward height grazed by ewes in mid- to late-pregnancy affect indices of colostrum intake by twin and triplet lambs?

Utilising dual-purpose crops in an Australian high-rainfall livestock production system to increase meat and wool production. 2. Production from breeding-ewe flocks

Context The use of dual-purpose crops (for grazing and grain) has increased in the high-rainfall zone in southern Australia. Aim A systems experiment examined the impact on livestock production and supplementary feeding when dual-purpose crops were incorporated into a production system based on Merino ewes producing yearling lambs for sale. Methods The experimental site near Canberra, ACT, was subdivided into nine experimental units (‘farmlets’) with three replicate farmlets for each of three production-system treatments. Each farmlet was managed as a self-contained unit with six Merino ewes and their progeny during 2013–16 (4 years). Ewes were joined in February, lambed in July and shorn in spring; the original cohort of ewes (born 2009) was replaced by a new cohort (born 2012) at the midpoint of the experiment. Six weaners were retained after weaning in each farmlet and sold as yearlings. Control farmlets were sown to pasture based on phalaris (Phalaris aquatica L.) and subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and comprised sub-paddocks to allow rotational grazing. Farmlets in treatments that included dual-purpose crops comprised six sub-paddocks (0.231 ha), with two sown to permanent pasture, and four supporting a rotation of pasture–pasture–dual-purpose canola (Brassica napus L.)–dual-purpose wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In one of the crop–pasture production system treatments, crop-grazing was prioritised for ewes (ECG treatment); in the other, crop-grazing was prioritised for their progeny weaners (WCG treatment). Key results Greasy fleece weight from ECG (5.3 kg) and WCG (5.1 kg) ewes was higher (P < 0.001) than from control ewes (4.7 kg) averaged over the 4 years. The final sale weight of yearling weaners from the WCG system (44.3 kg) was higher (P < 0.001) than from the control (39.2 kg) or ECG (39.1 kg) systems when averaged over the 4 years. The benefit was predominantly due to greater weight gain during the period when weaners grazed the crop during late autumn and winter. Sale weight of lamb per hectare was higher (P = 0.003) in the WCG treatment (216 kg) compared with the ECG treatment (186 kg) when averaged over the 4 years of the experiment but did not differ (P > 0.05) to the control (201 kg). Meat production over the 4 years was higher (P < 0.001) in the WCG system (226 kg/ha) than other treatments when weight gain from wethers in 2014 was included. The impact of including dual-purpose crops on supplementary feeding was variable and depended on seasonal conditions. Conclusions Incorporation of dual-purpose crops into the high-rainfall production system can increase meat and wool production, with the highest meat production being obtained when crop grazing was prioritised for young carry-over livestock. Implications Prioritising dual-purpose crops for young growing livestock can increase meat production from the system while allowing other livestock classes (wethers or ewes) to graze the crops in better seasons when there was excess forage that would otherwise have been under-utilised.

Invited review: Improving neonatal survival in small ruminants: science into practice

Neonatal mortality in small ruminant livestock has remained stubbornly unchanging over the past 40 years, and represents a significant loss of farm income, contributes to wastage and affects animal welfare. Scientific knowledge about the biology of neonatal adaptation after birth has been accumulating but does not appear to have had an impact in improving survival. In this paper, we ask what might be the reasons for the lack of impact of the scientific studies of lamb and kid mortality, and suggest strategies to move forward. Biologically, it is clear that achieving a good intake of colostrum, as soon as possible after birth, is crucial for neonatal survival. This provides fuel for thermoregulation, passive immunological protection and is involved in the development of attachment between the ewe and lamb. The behaviour of the lamb in finding the udder and sucking rapidly after birth is a key component in ensuring sufficient colostrum is ingested. In experimental studies, the main risk factors for lamb mortality are low birthweight, particularly owing to poor maternal nutrition during gestation, birth difficulty, litter size and genetics, which can all be partly attributed to their effect on the speed with which the lamb reaches the udder and sucks. Similarly, on commercial farms, low birthweight and issues with sucking were identified as important contributors to mortality. In epidemiological studies, management factors such as providing assistance with difficult births, were found to be more important than risk factors associated with housing. Social science studies suggest that farmers generally have a positive attitude to improving neonatal mortality but may differ in beliefs about how this can be achieved, with some farmers believing they had no control over early lamb mortality. Facilitative approaches, where farmers and advisors work together to develop neonatal survival strategies, have been shown to be effective in achieving management goals, such as optimising ewe nutrition, that lead to reductions in lamb mortality. We conclude that scientific research is providing useful information on the biology underpinning neonatal survival, such as optimal birthweights, lamb vigour and understanding the importance of sufficient colostrum intake, but the transfer of that knowledge would benefit from an improved understanding of the psychology of management change on farm. Developing tailored solutions, on the basis of adequate farm records, that make use of the now substantial body of scientific literature on neonatal mortality will help to achieve lower neonatal mortality.

Can a herb and white clover mix improve the performance of multiple-bearing ewes and their lambs to weaning?

The productive performance of highly fecund ewes and their progeny on ryegrass-based swards is limited in late pregnancy and lactation. Alternative herbages, such as chicory, plantain and red and white clover, have the potential to improve performance levels. In the present study, 49 twin- and 42 triplet-bearing Romney composite ewes bred to either Suffolk or Romney rams were allocated to one of three nutritional treatments from Day 131 of pregnancy [19 twin ewes on a ryegrass–white clover sward mix (Rye/WC); 16 twin ewes on a plantain–ryegrass sward mix (Plant/Rye); 14 twin ewes on a chicory–plantain–red and white clover sward mix (Herb); 13 triplet ewes on Rye/WC; 16 triplet ewes on Plant/Rye; and 13 triplet ewes on Herb] and remained on these sward treatments with their lambs until 75 days after the midpoint of the lambing period (L75). Nutritional treatment had no effect (P > 0.05) on ewe liveweight, body condition score (BCS) or non-esterified fatty acid and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations on Day 145 of pregnancy. At L75, ewes on the Herb treatment sward were heavier than ewes on Plant/Rye (70.75 ± 1.31 v. 61.43 ± 1.28 kg, respectively) and had a higher BCS than ewes on either Plant/Rye or Rye/WC (2.7 ± 0.1, 2.2 ± 0.1 and 2.3 ± 0.1, respectively). Sire type and nutritional treatment had no affect (P > 0.05) on lamb birthweight or weight at L75. At L20, lambs born to ewes on the Herb sward treatment were heavier than those on the Rye/WC and Plant/Rye treatments (8.74 ± 0.23 v. 7.98 ± 0.23 and 7.79 ± 0.22 kg, respectively; P < 0.05). Neither birth rank, sire type nor ewe treatment had any effect (P > 0.05) on maximum heat production on a per kg liveweight basis or total heat production. Romney-sired lambs on the Herb sward treatment had higher (P < 0.05) survival rates than those on the Rye/WC sward treatment (97.8% v. 61.7%, respectively). However, no such relationship was observed in lambs born to Suffolk sires (79.8% v. 84.8%, respectively). The survival response resulted in greater (P < 0.05) total liveweight of Romney-sired lambs at L75 per ewe on the Herb nutritional treatment than on the Rye/WC treatment (61.6 ± 5.0 v. 36.7 ± 4.6 kg, respectively) a relationship not observed (P > 0.05) in Suffolk-sired lambs. In conclusion, the present study indicates that there is the potential to improve the productive performance of multiple-bearing ewes and their lambs by grazing on a Herb sward mix.

Effect of nutrition from mid to late pregnancy on the performance of twin- and triplet-bearing ewes and their lambs

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of two different feeding levels on ewes during mid and late pregnancy on lamb birthweight and growth to weaning. Twin- and triplet-bearing Romney ewes (n = 80 and 56, respectively) were allocated to one of two feeding regimes and provided pastures with an average sward height of less than 2 cm (~700 kg dry matter/ha) or greater than 4 cm (~1300 kg dry matter/ha). Ewes were allocated to these feeding regimes during mid pregnancy (day 70–107 of pregnancy; P70–P107) and were reallocated in late pregnancy (P108–P147). This resulted in four sward height treatments: 2–2, 2–4, 4–2 and 4–4. During mid pregnancy, ewes provided with >4-cm-high swards had liveweight gains of 262–290 g/day compared with 12–31 g/day for ewes provided with <2-cm-high swards. In late pregnancy, ewe liveweight gains were influenced by the ewes’ previous nutritional treatment. Ewes in the 2–4 treatment had higher daily gains (538 g/day) than 4–4 ewes (343 g/day). In addition, 4–2 ewes gained 90 g/day compared with 247 g/day for 2–2 ewes. Throughout pregnancy, triplet-bearing ewes were heavier (P < 0.05) than twin-bearing ewes, but during lactation ewe weights were similar. On P130, ewes provided with <2-cm-high swards (4–2 and 2–2) had greater β-hydroxybutyrate (P < 0.05) and lower glucose (P < 0.05) plasma concentrations than ewes provided with >4-cm-high swards (2–4 and 4–4). On P139, however, ewes provided with 4–4 swards had higher plasma non-esterified fatty acid and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations than ewes in all other treatments. Lambs born to ewes in the 4–4 treatment had the greatest birthweights (P < 0.05), whereas lambs born to 2–2 ewes had the lowest birthweights. The birthweight of lambs born to 2–4 ewes was similar to that of lambs born to ewes provided with 4–2 and 4–4 swards. At weaning, ewe weights were similar between ewe nutritional treatments and ewes bearing twin or triplet fetuses. These findings suggest that when pasture growth is inadequate to provide pasture sward heights of 4 cm throughout pregnancy, restricted intake in mid-pregnancy may be partially compensated by providing additional pasture in late pregnancy.
