Catalytic Application to Biomass Pyrolysis in a Fixed Bed Reactor

A critical review on metal-based catalysts used in the pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass materials

This review discusses the technical aspects of improving the efficiency of the pyrolysis of lignocellulosic materials to increase the yield of the main products, which are bio-oil, biochar, and syngas. The latest aspects of catalyst development in the biomass pyrolysis process are presented focusing on the various catalyst structures, the physical and chemical performance of the catalysts, and the mode of the catalytic reaction. In bio-oil upgrading, atmospheric catalytic cracking is shown to be more economical than catalytic hydrotreating. Catalysts help in the upgrading process by facilitating several reaction pathways such as polymerization, aromatization, and alkyl condensation. However, the grade of bio-oil must be similar to that of diesel fuel. Hence, the properties of the pyrolysis liquid such as viscosity, kinematic viscosity, density, and boiling point are important and have been highlighted. Switching between types of catalysts has a significant influence on the final product yields and exhibits different levels of durability. Various catalysts have been shown to enhance gas yield at the expense of the yields of bio-oil and biochar that shift the overall purpose of pyrolysis. Therefore, the catalytic activity as a function of temperature, pressure, and catalyst biomass ratio is discussed in detail. These operational parameters are crucial because they determine the overall yield as well as the ratio of the oil, char, and gas products. Although significant progress has been made in catalytic pyrolysis, the economic feasibility of the process and the catalyst cost remain the major obstacles. This review concludes that the catalytic process would be feasible when the fuel selling price is reduced to less than US $ 4 per gallon of gasoline-equivalent, and when the selectivity of catalysts is further enhanced.

Catalytic pyrolysis of tire waste: Impacts of biochar catalyst on product evolution

Tire scrap is a solid waste that can be potentially used as the feedstock for the production of liquid fuels via the thermochemical process such as catalytic pyrolysis. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to develop the efficient while cost-effective catalyst for the catalytic pyrolysis of tire. In this study, the pyrolysis of tire scrap at 500 °C with the biochar produced from the gasification of poplar wood at 850 °C were conducted. The biochar catalyst significantly affected the evolution of the volatiles and the char properties, while had a slight impact on the yields of the gas, tar and char products. The biochar catalyst catalyzes the cracking of limonene, a major liquid product in tar, to form significantly more propane in gases and alkanes or alkenes in the tar. In addition, the interaction between the biochar with the oxygen-containing organics promoted the re-condensation reaction, which increased the oxygen content in the char, but the biochar catalyst did not influence the evolution of the aromatics. Additionally, the catalytic pyrolysis also makes the biochar catalyst more oxygen-deficient and more resistant towards oxidation. Concluding all the results showed that biochar, which were produced from the gasification of poplar wood can be a potential catalyst for the pyrolysis of tire.

Catalytic pyrolysis of Miscanthus x giganteus over activated alumina

The catalytic effects of activated alumina (Al2O3) on the pyrolysis of Miscanthusxgiganteus, a new energy crop, were investigated. Catalytic pyrolysis experiments carried out under static and nitrogen atmospheres were performed in a fixed-bed reactor. The final pyrolysis temperature was kept constant at 550 degrees C in all of the experiments. The effect of catalyst loading (by weight of feedstock as 10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%), heating rate (10 degrees C and 50 degrees Cmin(-1)), nitrogen flow rate (50, 100, 150 and 200cm3min(-1)) on the pyrolysis conversion and product yields were investigated. The results were compared with those obtained in non-catalytic pyrolysis. Activated alumina catalyst has a strong influence on the Miscanthusxgiganteus pyrolysis product and conversion yield. Furthermore, the catalytic bio-oils obtained from catalytic pyrolysis under static and nitrogen atmospheres were examined using elemental analysis, column chromatography, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy methods.
