Acute effect of taping on plantar pressure characteristics in athletes with exercise-induced leg pain: a description and comparison of groups

Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the simplified Chinese version of the Exercise-Induced Leg Pain Questionnaire (EILP)

PURPOSE

This study cross-culturally adapted and psychometrically validated a simplified Chinese version of the Exercise-Induced Leg Pain Questionnaire (SC-EILP) for evaluating the severity of symptoms and sports ability among individuals with exercise-induced leg pain.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred and fourteen participants with exercise-induced leg pain were included. To assess reliability, we calculated Cronbach's α and intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Construct validity was analysed by assessing the correlations between SC-EILP and visual analogue scale (VAS), University of California Los Angeles activity score (UCLA), and short form (36) health survey (SF-36). Factorial validity was used to establish the factor structure of the questionnaire.

RESULTS

The EILP was cross-culturally well-adapted and translated into simplified Chinese. Each item was appropriately correlated with the total items. SC-EILP had nearly good reliability [Cronbach's α = 0.798, ICC = 0.897, 95% confidence interval 0.851-0.929]. The elimination of any one item in all did not result in a value of Cronbach's α of <0.80. SC-EILP had a very good correlation with VAS (-0.607, p < 0.01) and a moderate correlation with UCLA (0.581, p < 0.01) and physical domains of SF-36 (0.499-0.528, p < 0.01). Exploratory factor analysis revealed the 3-factor loading explained 74.736% of the total variance [Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin (KMO) = 0.672, C2 = 665.34, p < 0.001].

CONCLUSIONS

SC-EILP showed excellent acceptability, internal consistency, reliability, and construct validity, and could be recommended for individuals in Mainland China.

Efficacy of kinesiology taping on the management of shin splints: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Shin splint is one of the most common sports injuries after strenuous exercise. Kinesiology taping (KT) is a popular noninvasive remedy used in sports-related disorders, with the potential effects of relieving pain, facilitating proprioception, modulating muscle activation and correcting abnormal movement patterns. However, the exact efficacy of KT on shin splints is still unknown, and previous findings are inconsistent. Hence, this study aimed to conduct a systematic review to evaluate the current status of relevant evidence on its efficacy.

METHODS

The review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines, and a systematic search of the literature was conducted in December 2020. Electronic databases, Embase, Scopus, Medline, Web of Science, PubMed and Biomed Central were searched for the identification of pertinent studies with pre-defined key terms on shin splints and KT.

RESULTS

Four studies with a total sample size of 141 participants were included and analyzed. Two studies had within-subject designs, whereas the other two were randomized clinical trials. Although the positive results of KT were reported by the studies, methodological quality varied from poor to moderate according to the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale or Non-Randomized Studies-of Interventions.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this review revealed that the efficacy of KT on shin splints remains not clear. Evidence that supports its effectiveness in individuals with shin splints is currently limited. Further studies with good methodological quality and study design are warranted.

Effect of kinesio taping on hemiplegic shoulder pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of kinesio taping for the management of hemiplegic shoulder pain.

DATA SOURCES

MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, CENTRAL, CNKI, Wan Fang databases and the grey literature research were searched from inception to July 2020.

METHODS

We considered randomized controlled trials in English or Chinese that used kinesio taping for the treatment of hemiplegic shoulder pain. Two reviewers independently screened the articles, scored the methodological quality using the PEDro scale, assessed risk of bias using the Cochrane's risk of bias tool and extracted the data. The outcomes included pain, motor function of the upper limb, magnitude of shoulder subluxation and activities of daily living post-intervention.

RESULTS

A total of nine studies (n = 424) met the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis demonstrated a significant effect of kinesio taping on pain (mean difference(MD)= -1.45, 95% confidence interval(CI): -1.98 to-0.92 cm, p < 0.0001), motor function of upper limb (MD = 4.22,95%CI: 3.49 to 4.95, p < 0.00001), magnitude of shoulder subluxation (standardized mean difference(SMD) = -0.65, 95%CI: -0.95 to -0.35, p < 0.0001) and activities of daily living (MD = 6.86, 95% CI: 3.99 to 9.73, p < 0.00001) post-intervention.

CONCLUSION

This meta-analysis suggests a beneficial effect of kinesio taping for reducing shoulder subluxation, improving motor function of the upper limb and activities of daily living in patients with hemiplegic shoulder pain post-intervention, which could not be interpreted simply as a placebo effect. And it was associated with reduced pain for patients with chronic stroke.
