Collegiate Athletes' Cognitive Beliefs Related to Setback Anxiety and Rumination in Sport

Setbacks are common occurrences in sport. Recently, setbacks such as injuries and deselection have been accompanied, and confounded, by setbacks related to COVID-19. How students manage a setback may depend on the interaction of two control beliefs: primary control (PC) to directly influence the setback and secondary control (SC) to adjust to it. Purpose: This study investigates the relationships between athletes' PC and SC and two important sport setback-related outcomes-anxiety and rumination. Method: We employed a cross-sectional design examining collegiate athletes in the USA and Canada (N = 200; Mage = 20.9 years, 143 women, 52 men, 3 non-binary, 2 did not disclose). Using regression tests controlling for setback severity, we examined the interaction effects of athletes' PC and SC beliefs relative to setbacks, on the anxiety and rumination variables. Results: We found SC beliefs were beneficial to setback-related anxiety and rumination. A significant interaction indicated that particularly when PC was low, SC had negative associations with setback-related anxieties about letting others down (β = -.45, p < .001) and experiencing pain (β = -.37, p < .001). Conclusion: The findings suggest SC beliefs are important for managing setbacks-specifically for attenuating harmful rumination, and specific setback anxieties. We discuss the possibility of enhancing SC beliefs for combatting sport setbacks through control-enhancing interventions as a direction for future research.

Return to play of young and adult professional athletes after COVID-19: A scoping review

Background/objective

Given the persistence of COVID-19 under various facets and mutations, there is an urgent need to understand the debate on a safe return to play for professional athletes (young and adults) recovering from the infection. This work offers a scoping and comprehensive review on the topic during the first two years of the pandemic event by providing an identification of main clusters of research, relevant gaps and significant insights for future investigation.

Methods

The literature is selected using the search engines of: PubMed®, SCIENCEDIRECT, and SCOPUS. Further criteria for selection are: Time range of 2020-2022; Scope: Return to play of professional athletes recovering from COVID-19 infection; 3) Types of publications: Research papers, reviews, practice guidelines, case reports; 4) Language: English. Two independent researchers performed a quality check on a random sample (n = 30%) of publications.

Results

Main results reveal four research clusters deepening the analysis on: myocarditis, cardiac diseases and return to play, training and rehabilitation, mass screening and risk assessment, and sport and bio-psycho-social sphere for a safe return to play. Major collaborations occur between UK-South Africa, UK-USA, USA-Canada, and USA-Australia.

Conclusions

Important gaps refer to a lack of investigation on a safe return to play for female athletes in mostly all sports disciplines; on the other hand, sport and the bio-psycho-social sphere of the athlete is a fast-growing topic. Both deserve further attention in the immediate future to improve ad-hoc sport and exercise practices.

A Cross-Sectional Study of the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Lockdown Orders on Injury Prevalence in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Athletes

Objective The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on injury prevalence in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) varsity athletes following mandatory state-issued stay-at-home orders in March 2020. A secondary objective was to evaluate the relationship between COVID-19 infection and injury prevalence. Methods The respondents were recruited during pre-participation evaluations held at a Division I university in California in the summer of 2021, as well as via emails shared by athletic trainers at the institution. Data was collected using the Qualtrics Survey Platform (Qualtrics, Provo, UT). For all questions regarding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the participants were asked to compare March 2020-March 2021 ("post-pandemic") to March 2019-March 2020 ("pre-pandemic"). Injury was defined as a physical complaint or condition sustained by an athlete during participation in training or competition that resulted in at least one missed day of practice or competition. The study participants were also asked to disclose their history of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection. Results One hundred forty-six respondents completed the survey, with a 72.3% response rate. Of the respondents, 33.6% (n=49) reported sustaining at least one injury in the year preceding the pandemic, whereas 45.2% (n=66) of respondents reported sustaining at least one injury within the first year of the pandemic, a 34.5% relative increase in injuries (RR=1.35; 95% CI=1.01, 1.80). There was no significant difference in the number of upper body (RR=1.64; 95% CI=0.8, 3.34; p=0.177) versus lower body (RR=1.31; 95% CI=0.94, 1.82; p=0.11) injuries before and after the pandemic onset. Thirty-two respondents reported a history of COVID-19 infection. The athletes who reported a prior COVID-19 diagnosis were no more likely than the athletes with no prior COVID-19 diagnosis to obtain an injury from March 2020 to February 2021 (p=0.85). Conclusion This study indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders were associated with a greater risk of injury in this cohort of collegiate athletes. Interestingly, a history of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection was not associated with increased risk of injury.

Swimming at the Time of COVID-19: A Cross-Sectional Study among Young Italian Competitive Athletes

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, several restriction measures were imposed to control the virus transmission, with important repercussions on different sectors, including sport. This study aimed to explore the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Italian competitive swimmers by analyzing how the disease and the restriction measures affected their training. In total, 396 competitive swimmers (mean age 16.0 ± 3.2 years) participated. A questionnaire was used to collect their general information, to assess whether they had had COVID-19 and the number of training days lost due to the disease or to the closure of swimming facilities, and the possible alternative training adopted. Twenty-four (6.1%) participants had had COVID-19 and lost, on average, 32 training days. The closure of facilities caused an interruption in swimming training for about 18% of the participants. The majority of these continued their training, mainly through home-based exercise, but reduced their weekly training time (-8 median hours/week). A positive association was found between regularly adopted weekly training volume and that assumed during pandemic closure (OR 9.433, CI95% 1.644-54.137, p = 0.012), suggesting that the previous level of engagement in sport can represent a predictor of exercise maintenance in challenging situations such as a pandemic. Further studies are needed to identify personal, environmental, and social resources that can help individuals to counteract the negative effects of restriction measures.
