Examining Sex-Based Delays in Utilizing Advocacy Support Services Among Australian Military Veterans: Implications for Health Care Access and Suicide Prevention

This study explores the impact of sex on delays experienced by Australian military veterans in accessing advocacy support services within the veterans' non-profit sector. A detailed analysis of intake records from 150 injured veterans who entered the Returned and Services League of Australia's advocacy program in 2021 reveals significant disparities between male and female veterans in seeking assistance. On average, male veterans delay accessing support by 20.4 years post-service, compared to 9.1 years for female veterans. These prolonged delays hinder veterans' ability to secure financial and medical support from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, limiting timely access to essential healthcare services. As a result, delays can exacerbate physical and psychological symptoms, impede recovery, and increase the risk of suicide. The findings provide valuable insights for international healthcare professionals on the influence of military culture and traditional masculine norms in shaping veterans' help-seeking behaviors. By understanding these dynamics, healthcare practitioners can develop targeted, sex-sensitive interventions that address specific barriers faced by male and female veterans. Ensuring timely access to advocacy support is crucial for improving health outcomes and reducing suicide risk in this vulnerable population.

An Analysis of Women’s Fitness Demands and Their Influencing Factors in Urban China

The “Healthy China 2030” plan states that it is necessary to formulate and implement physical health intervention plans for special groups, including women. Based on questionnaire data from women in seven Chinese cities, our research analyzed the status quo of women’s fitness, its influencing factors, and the differences in and characteristics of different types of women’s fitness demands from four aspects: demography, fitness motivation, fitness behavior, and fitness demands, so as to provide a reference for the promotion of women’s fitness. A total of 3473 valid samples were completed. The questionnaire included five age groups: there were 146 in the “20–29 years old” group, 829 in the “30–39 years old” group, 1088 in the “40–49 years old” group, 1105 in the “50–59 years old” group and 305 in the “60 years old and above” group. The questionnaire used in this study was a self-made questionnaire. The contents of the questionnaire included age, occupation, educational level, family circumstances, and health status, women’s fitness behavior, fitness motivation and fitness demands. The results show that the current situation of urban women’s fitness in China is characterized by low frequency and short duration of exercise. The internal factors affecting women’s fitness demands include fitness motivation and fitness behavior. The external factors affecting their fitness demands are social environment and family environment. The differences in women’s fitness demands mainly come from women’s occupation, monthly income, and family stage.

Pregnancy (im)possibilities: identifying factors that influence sexual minority women's pregnancy desires

Sexual minority women (SMW) face both increased risk for unintended pregnancy and barriers to achieving wanted pregnancy, but little research investigates SMW's pregnancy desires. To fill this gap, we conducted five focus groups and 11 in-depth interviews with 20-30-year-old SMW in three US cities. Findings highlight that the heteronormative pregnancy planning paradigm lacks salience for SMW. While some SMW clearly wish to avoid pregnancy, many others are unsure, and factors influencing this uncertainty include relationship context, anticipating logistical barriers, and discord between queer identity and pregnancy.

Reproductive decisions as mediators between education and employment of women in Kyrgyzstan

Researchers created a large body of evidence showing that education and fertility are strong determinants of women's employment. In postsocialist economies, women's reproductive decisions have become more critical to employment opportunities. Yet the issue is not well-understood. The researchers focus on the mediating roles of reproductive decisions on the relationship between education and employment among Kyrgyzstani women. The study data come from the 2012 Demographic and Health Survey (N = 2419). Consistent with other research, more education was associated with fewer number of children and being employed. An unexpected finding was that having more children was associated with increased employment.

Women's Reproductive Health in Sociocultural Context

PURPOSE

The special issue on Women's Reproductive Health in Cultural Context covers multiple dimensions of women's reproductive health and how it might be shaped by cultural meanings, social and gender inequities, and power differentials, employing a variety of methodological approaches. On the one hand, it aims to bring to the forefront the conversation about how women's health is uniquely experienced and constructed in local settings, and on the other hand, it aims to draw broader conclusions from a perspective of interconnectedness of women and the shared issues that they face.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The special issue was initiated through a call for submissions and includes ten articles on the topic of women's reproductive health in cultural context.

CONCLUSIONS

The articles provide many insights into how the context in which they live can disadvantage women and endanger their health, as well as offer perspectives on women's resistance to disempowering and stigmatizing discourses and practices. It aims to be of interest to scholars in behavioral medicine, psychology, and other social sciences.
