Water and its partially dissociated fragments at metal surfaces

Ionicity and hydrogen affinity of water layers on metals

The ability of metal surfaces to dissociate hydrogen molecules is key to many ways that metals react to their environment. Often, the barrier to dissociation is linked to the formation of surface hydrogen adatoms. Here, we show that hydrogen can be more strongly bound to water-covered surfaces in the form of hydronium ions than as adatoms. Density functional theory reveals that the hydronium binding is proportional to the surface electronic work function. For the case of Pt(111), a particularly high work function surface, the proton affinity of adsorbed water films can be 0.4 eV larger than that of the bare metal surface. This binding is large enough to make the water films susceptible to the formation of hydroxyl and hydronium ion pairs. We present evidence from scanning tunneling microscopy for the existence of hydronium ions in water films on Pt(111). This new insight into the stability of hydronium-containing water layers provides a basis for more realistic models of the chemical reactivity of water films on metals.

Submolecular Insights into Interfacial Water by Hydrogen-Sensitive Scanning Probe Microscopy

ConspectusWater-solid interfaces have attracted extensive attention because of their crucial roles in a wide range of chemical and physical processes, such as ice nucleation and growth, dissolution, corrosion, heterogeneous catalysis, and electrochemistry. To understand these processes, enormous efforts have been made to obtain a molecular-level understanding of the structure and dynamics of water on various solid surfaces. By the use of scanning probe microscopy (SPM), many remarkable structures of H-bonding networks have been directly visualized, significantly advancing our understanding of the delicate competition between water-water and water-solid interactions. Moreover, the detailed dynamics of water molecules, such as diffusion, clustering, dissociation, and intermolecular and intramolecular proton transfer, have been investigated in a well-controlled manner by tip manipulation. However, resolving the submolecular structure of surface water has remained a great challenge for a long time because of the small size and light mass of protons. Discerning the position of hydrogen in water is not only crucial for the accurate determination of the structure of H-bonding networks but also indispensable in probing the proton transfer dynamics and the quantum nature of protons.In this Account, we focus on the recent advances in the H-sensitive SPM technique and its applications in probing the structures, dynamics, and nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) of surface water and ion hydrates at the submolecular level. First, we introduce the development of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) and qPlus-based atomic force microscopy (qPlus-AFM), which allow access to the degrees of freedom of protons in both real and energy space. qPlus-AFM even allows imaging of interfacial water in a weakly perturbative manner by measuring the high-order electrostatic force between the CO-terminated tip and the polar water molecule, which enables the subtle difference of OH directionality to be discerned. Next we showcase the applications of H-sensitive STM/AFM in addressing several key issues related to water-solid interfaces. The surface wetting behavior and the H-bonding structure of low-dimensional ice on various hydrophilic and hydrophobic solid surfaces are characterized at the atomic scale. Then we discuss the quantitative assessment of NQEs of surface water, including proton tunneling and quantum delocalization. Moreover, the weakly perturbative and H-sensitive SPM technique can be also extended to investigations of water-ion interactions on solid surfaces, revealing the effect of hydration structure on the interfacial ion transport. Finally, we provide an outlook on the further directions and challenges for SPM studies of water-solid interfaces.

Growth modulation of atomic layer deposition of HfO2 by combinations of H2O and O3 reactants

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a thin film deposition technique based on self-saturated reactions between a precursor and reactant vacuum conditions. A typical ALD reaction consists of the first half-reaction of the precursor and the second half-reaction of the counter reactant, in which the terminal groups on the surface change after each half-reaction. In this study, the effects of counter reactants on the surface termination and growth characteristics of ALD HfO₂ thin films formed on Si substrates using tetrakis(dimethylamino)-hafnium (TDMAH) as a precursor were investigated. Two counter reactants, H₂O and O₃, were individually employed, as well as in combination with consecutive exposure by H₂O-O₃ and O₃-H₂O. The film growth behaviors and properties differed when the sequence of exposure of the substrate to the reactants was varied. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) simulation, the changes are attributed to the effects of the surface terminations formed from different counter reactant combinations. The knowledge from this work could provide insight for precisely tuning the growth and properties of ALD films.

Proton Transport and Related Chemical Processes of Ice

Excess protons play a key role in the chemical reactions of ice because of their exceptional mobility, even when the diffusion of atoms and molecules is suppressed in ice at low temperatures. This article reviews the current state of knowledge on the properties of excess protons in ice, with a focus on the involvement of protons in chemical reactions. The mechanism of efficient proton transport in ice, which involves a proton-hopping relay along the hydrogen-bond ice network and the reorientation of water, is discussed and compared with the inefficient transport of hydroxide in ice. Distinctly different properties of protons residing in the ice interior and on the ice surface are emphasized. Recent observations of the spontaneous occurrence of reactions in ice at low temperatures, which include the dissociation of protic acids and the hydrolysis of acidic oxides, are discussed with regard to the kinetic and thermodynamic effects of mobile protons on the promotion of unique chemical processes of ice.

Water Dissociation and Hydroxyl Formation on Ni(110)

Nickel is an active catalyst for hydrogenation and re-forming reactions, with the reactions showing a strong dependence on the surface exposed. Here, we describe the mixed hydroxyl-water phases formed during water dissociation on Ni(110) using scanning tunneling microscopy and low-current low-energy electron diffraction. Water dissociation starts between 150 and 180 K as the H-bond structure evolves from linear one-dimensional (1D) chains of intact water into a two-dimensional (2D) network containing short rows of face-sharing hexagonal rings. As further water desorbs, the hexagonal rows adopt a local (2 × 3) arrangement, forming small, disordered domains separated by strain relief features. Decomposition of this phase occurs near 220 K to form linear 1D structures consisting of flat, zigzag water chains, with each water stabilized by donating one H to hydroxyl to form a branched chain structure. The OH-H₂O chains repel each other, with the saturation layer ordering into a (2 0, 1 4) structure that decomposes to OH near 245 K as further water desorbs. The structure of the mixed OH/H₂O phases is discussed and contrasted with those found on the related Cu(110) surface, with the differences attributed to strain in the 2D H-bond network caused by the short Ni lattice spacing and strong bond to OH/H₂O.

Binding Site Transitions Across Strained Oxygenated and Hydroxylated Pt(111)

The effects of strain σ on the binding position preference of oxygen atoms and hydroxyl groups adsorbed on Pt(111) have been investigated using density functional theory. A transition between the bridge and FCC binding occurs under compressive strain of the O/Pt(111) surface. A significant reconstruction occurs under compressive strain of the OH/Pt(111) surface, and the surface OH groups preferentially occupy on‐top (bridge) positions at highly compressive (less compressive/tensile) strains. Changes to magnetisation of the O‐ and OH‐populated surfaces are discussed and for O/Pt(111) oxygenation reduces the surface magnetism via a delocalised mechanism. The origins of the surface magnetisation for both O‐ and OH‐bearing systems are discussed in terms of the state‐resolved electronic populations and of the surface charge density.
