Dealing with complicity in fieldwork: Reflections on studying genetic research in Pakistan

Health-related ethnography undertaken in a context marked by social inequalities and colonial legacies requires critical attention to power imbalances in the fieldwork. In this paper, I draw on my own experiences from studying genetic research in Pakistan. As a Danish-born female researcher with roots in Pakistan, I have followed genetic researchers and families dealing with genetic conditions in Pakistan. Through examples I unearth how encounters in the field were shaped by complicities of being in-between the Danish and the Pakistani, of studying and doing international research at the same time, and of my inaction towards suffering families. I base my analysis on the notion that complicity manifests in a generative, and unavoidable, engagement with both complex structures of inequality and interlocutors. We can never fully understand the specificities or consequences of complicity-whether moral or epistemic-when entering, engaging with or representing our fields. However, by staying constructively with the tensions, instead of attempting to move beyond the discomfort that they might create, we can learn how to deal with the consequences and in that, build further the value of ethnographic activity.

Dilemas, disonancias y conflictos éticos del trabajo de campo en antropología médica en contextos institucionales de atención a la salud

El trabajo de campo etnográfico, que implica el encuentro con la otredad, es utilizado por la antropología médica para acercarse a la comprensión de problemáticas sociales relacionadas con la salud, la enfermedad, la atención y la muerte. El objetivo del trabajo fue realizar una reflexión ética de diversas situaciones conflictivas experimentadas por tres antropólogas durante sus investigaciones en México, a través del análisis de sus diarios de campo. Con este fin, se realizó un análisis grupal e interdisciplinario desde una perspectiva ética. Los conflictos encontrados se clasificaron en: 1. Dilemas éticos (como la sinceridad vs. ocultamiento de información); 2. Disonancias éticas (como la justicia en el acceso de los informantes a los servicios médicos, el acceso y la identidad del antropólogo en campo, los límites de la intervención, la reciprocidad y las emociones del investigador); y 3. Otros (conflictos éticos tales como la observación del paternalismo médico y las diferencias disciplinares entre el quehacer antropológico y el médico). Este análisis permitió comprender a través de una alerta ético-metodológica los posicionamientos epistemológicos, metodológicos y, principalmente, éticos de las investigadoras que, de manera subrepticia, guían la construcción del quehacer antropológico. Asimismo, la investigación permitió vislumbrar la responsabilidad de las acciones o inacciones del investigador frente a las personas observadas dentro de un contexto de atención en salud.

A systematic review on ethical challenges of 'field' research in low-income and middle-income countries: respect, justice and beneficence for research staff?

Introduction

Primary data collection in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) is associated with a range of ethical complexities. Considerations on how to adequately ensure the well-being of research staff are largely neglected in contemporary ethics discourse. This systematic review aims to identify the ethical challenges that research staff across different hierarchical levels and scientific disciplines face when conducting research in LMICs.

Methods

We searched 13 electronic databases and handsearched publications in six selected journals as well as the reference lists of all included studies. No restrictions were applied with respect to the publication date, research design, and target population.

Results

23 151 studies were retrieved, 183 of which met our inclusion criteria. We identified nine different types of ethical challenges that research staff may be exposed to during field research, including (1) role conflicts that can emerge from participants’ help requests and the high level of deprivation found in certain study settings, (2) feelings of guilt and (3) detrimental mental health impacts. Further challenges were (4) sexual harassment (5) safety risks and (6) political repression, particularly in postconflict, disaster-ridden or autocratic study contexts. Additionally, studies reported (7) inadequate working conditions and (8) power imbalances within research teams, while (9) ethics boards were found to be ill equipped to anticipate and address emerging risks, thus increasing the ethical liability of researchers.

Conclusion

This review revealed several complex ethical challenges that research staff may face during data collection. In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 8.8 on ‘safe and secure working environments’ and to protect research staff from harm, amendments must urgently be made to current ethical standards.

Feelings in the Field

Despite the recent theoretical debate over the importance of addressing emotions in fieldwork, most European undergraduate programmes in anthropology still lack methodology courses that specifically focus on the emotional impact of doing research. In this article, I draw from my research with activist parents of autistic children in Portugal to explore the affective dimensions of fieldwork experience. In particular, I give an account of how I have dwelled on the emotional challenges that I faced, how these have resulted in vehicles of understanding and affected the analysis of my work as an anthropologist. While fieldwork experience always entails unexpected and surprising emotional challenges, I argue that as anthropologists we can surely benefit from more tailored support networks, safer spaces for discussion, and better pastoral care.

Embodied ethnography in psychology: Learning points from expatriate migration research

Interviews and observation are often the preferred methods when psychologists conduct fieldwork. However, psychology can learn from recent developments in anthropology and sociology. Here researchers use their own embodied sensations in participatory research as a way to investigate less verbalized, more hidden, sensorial, and affective aspects of the life-worlds they are studying. In this article, I use case examples from research on privileged migrants (expatriates) to demonstrate how significant insights can emerge when we apply an embodied approach in our research. Migration is not only behavioral, social, verbal, or imaginative events but includes the migrant’s body—its sensory experiences and emotions. Thus, we need to embrace additional methods to investigate multifaceted psychological processes such as migration.
