Abstract
In circular economy, useful plastic materials are kept in circulation as opposed to being landfilled, incinerated, or leaked into the natural environment. Pyrolysis is a chemical recycling technique useful for unrecyclable plastic wastes that produce gas, liquid (oil), and solid (char) products. Although the pyrolysis technique has been extensively studied and there are several installations applying it on the industrial scale, no commercial applications for the solid product have been found yet. In this scenario, the use of plastic-based char for the biogas upgrading may be a sustainable way to transform the solid product of pyrolysis into a particularly beneficial material. This paper reviews the preparation and main parameters of the processes affecting the final textural properties of the plastic-based activated carbons. Moreover, the application of those materials for the CO2 capture in the processes of biogas upgrading is largely discussed.

Abstract
The selective oxidation of styrene under heterogeneous catalyzed conditions delivers environmentally friendly paths for the production of benzaldehyde, an important intermediate for the synthesis of several products. The present review explores heterogeneous catalysts for styrene oxidation using a variety of metal catalysts over the last decade. The use of several classes of supports is discussed, including metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, carbon materials and silicas, among others. The studied catalytic systems propose as most used oxidants tert-butyl hydroperoxide, and hydrogen peroxide and mild reaction conditions. The reaction mechanism proceeds through the generation of an intermediate reactive metal-oxygen species by catalyst-oxidant interactions. Overall, most of the studies highlight the synergetic effects among the metal and support for the activity and selectivity enhancement.

Performance of Iron-Functionalized Activated Carbon Catalysts (Fe/AC-f) on CWPO Wastewater Treatment. Catalysts 2021. Abstract
Two commercial activated carbon were functionalized with nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and ethylenediamine to induce the modification of their surface functional groups and facilitate the stability of corresponding AC-supported iron catalysts (Fe/AC-f). Synthetized Fe/AC-f catalysts were characterized to determine bulk and surface composition (elemental analysis, emission spectroscopy, XPS), textural (N2 isotherms), and structural characteristics (XRD). All the Fe/AC-f catalysts were evaluated in the degradation of phenol in ultrapure water matrix by catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO). Complete pollutant removal at short reaction times (30–60 min) and high TOC reduction (XTOC = 80 % at ≤ 120 min) were always achieved at the conditions tested (500 mg·L−1 catalyst loading, 100 mg·L−1 phenol concentration, stoichiometric H2O2 dose, pH 3, 50 °C and 200 rpm), improving the results found with bare activated carbon supports. The lability of the interactions of iron with functionalized carbon support jeopardizes the stability of some catalysts. This fact could be associated to modifications of the induced surface chemistry after functionalization as a consequence of the iron immobilization procedure. The reusability was demonstrated by four consecutive CWPO cycles where the activity decreased from 1st to 3rd, to become recovered in the 4th run. Fe/AC-f catalysts were applied to treat two real water matrices: the effluent of a wastewater treatment plant with a membrane biological reactor (WWTP-MBR) and a landfill leachate, opening the opportunity to extend the use of these Fe/AC-f catalysts for complex wastewater matrices remediation. The degradation of phenol spiked WWTP-MBR effluent by CWPO using Fe/AC-f catalysts revealed pH of the reaction medium as a critical parameter to obtain complete elimination of the pollutant, only reached at pH 3. On the contrary, significant TOC removal, naturally found in complex landfill leachate, was obtained at natural pH 9 and half stoichiometric H2O2 dose. This highlights the importance of the water matrix in the optimization of the CWPO operating conditions.

Abstract
In this study, a novel carbon nanotube (CNT) based nanocatalyst (Ni@Pd/CNT) was synthesized by modifying CNTs using Ni@Pd core–shell nanoparticles (NPs). Ni@Pd/CNT was used in catalytic carbonylative cross-coupling between 4-iodoanisole and phenylboronic acid. The Ni@Pd NPs possessed a magnetic nickel (Ni) core with a palladium (Pd) structural composite shell. Thus, the use of Ni had led to a reduced consumption of Pd without sacrificing the overall catalytic performance, simultaneously making it reusable as it could be conveniently recovered from the reaction mixture by using an external magnetic field. Immobilization of the Ni@Pd NPs on carbon nanotubes not only prevented their aggregation, but also significantly enhanced the accessibility of the catalytically active sites. The abovementioned approach based on carbon nanotubes and Ni@Pd NPs provided a useful platform for the fabrication of noble-metal-based nanocatalysts with easy accessibility and low cost, which may allow for an efficient green alternative for various catalytic reductions. In this study, a novel carbon nanotube (CNT) based nanocatalyst (Ni@Pd/CNT) was synthesized by modifying CNTs using Ni@Pd core–shell nanoparticles (NPs).![]()

Abstract
The development of green and sustainable protocols for synthetic routes is a growing area of research in chemistry worldwide. The development of sustainable processes and products through innovative catalytic materials and technologies, that allow a better use of resources, is undoubtedly a very important issue facing research chemists today. Environmentally and economically advanced catalytic processes for selective alkane oxidations reactions, as is the case of cyclohexane oxidation, are now focused on catalysts’ stability and their reuse, intending to overcome the drawbacks posed by current homogeneous systems. The aim of this short review is to highlight recent contributions in heterogeneous catalysis regarding porous support materials to be applied to cyclohexane oxidation reaction. Different classes of porous materials are covered, from carbon nanomaterials to zeolites, mesoporous silicas, and metal organic frameworks. The role performed by the materials to be used as supports towards an enhancement of the activity/selectivity of the catalytic materials and the ability of recycling and reuse in consecutive catalytic cycles is highlighted.

Abstract
Alkaline potassium compounds such as K2CO3 and KOH are chemical activators used to produce activated carbons (ACs). The substance, known as wine stone or cream of tartar and formed in wine fermentation tanks during wine production from grape juice concentrates, consists of potassium hydrogen tartrate (KHC4H4O6). Highly porous carbons with various textural characteristics were obtained from organic wine stone subjected to simple heat-treatment. This procedure is a one-step carbonization treatment performed at different carbonization temperatures (400 and 900 °C) and times (15 and 360 min), and nitrogen flow rates (100 and 600 ml/min). The chemical and physical properties of AC were examined using SEM-EDX, FT-IR analysis, particle size distribution, iodine number, pHpzc, BET surface area, surface functional group analysis by the Boehm's titration. BET surface area, total pore volume, average pore diameter, iodine number, pHzpc and carbon content were 1814.6 m2 g-1, 0.7767 cm3 g-1, 18.2 Å, 1986.4 mg g-1, 6.18 and 92.96%, respectively. Pore size, surface area and pore volume increased with an increase in carbonization temperature, and AC surface had high porosity and acidic functional groups. A promising approach focusing on the use of potassium-enriched properties of wine stone for easy and environmentally friendly production of activated carbons is emphasized.

Abstract
Herein, Cu(ii) complexes were anchored within the nanospaces of a magnetic fibrous silicate with a high surface area and easily accessible active sites via a facile approach, leading to the successful synthesis of a novel potent nanocatalyst (FeNi3/DFNS/Cu). Furthermore, FeNi3/DFNS/Cu was supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via an usual nozzle electrospinning method (CNT-FeNi3/DFNS/Cu). In addition, its performance as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline was tested in a batch reactor. Tetracycline is an antibiotic that is commonly utilized in veterinary medicine and in the treatment of human infections, but is hazardous to aquatic environments. However, the usual processes for the removal of tetracycline are not efficient. The eco-friendly attributes of this catalytic system include high catalytic activity and ease of recovery from the reaction mixture using an external magnet, and it can be reused several times without significant loss in its performance. Also, protocols such as hot filtration, and mercury poisoning provided complete insight into the nature of this heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, Cu(ii) complexes were anchored within the nanospaces of a magnetic fibrous silicate with a high surface area and easily accessible active sites via a facile approach, leading to the successful synthesis of a novel potent nanocatalyst (FeNi3/DFNS/Cu).![]()

Abstract
The surface chemistry of nanocarbon support can tailor chemical properties of precious metal nanoparticle/nanocarbon hybrid catalyst in heterogeneous reactions. We report on modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO) support with ionic liquid-derived carbonaceous surface for palladium nanoparticle (Pd NPs) decoration and their actions in different heterogeneous reactions. The surface chemistry of support materials was characterized in detail, and the influence of which on the formation and distribution of metal particles was further investigated. Three different types of reactions including Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction, CO oxidation and phenol reduction were examined in terms of reactivity and selectivity. The roles of substituted nitrogen in graphitic lattice and grafted groups on the carbon surface were exploited. Nitrogen-doping can give rise to changes in electronic properties of supported metals, and the Lewis basicity of the doped nitrogen atoms can favor the adsorption of acidic reactants in phenol reduction. The grafted groups derived a negative impact to the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction, due to the involvement of larger reactant molecules, despite that they could prevent significant sintering of Pd NPs in the CO oxidation.

JOURNAL OF THE AIR & WASTE MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION (1995) 2015; 65:1297-1305. Abstract
UNLABELLED In this study, activated carbon was prepared from Chinese chestnut burs assisted by microwave irradiation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) as activator, and the process conditions were optimized employing Box-Behnken design (BBD) and response surface methodology (RSM). The optimized variables were irradiation time, impregnation time, and mass ratio of alkali-to-carbon, and the iodine adsorption value was used to evaluate the adsorption property of activated carbon. The optimal preparation conditions were determined as follows: irradiation time 17 min, impregnation time 240 min, and mass ratio of alkali-to-char 1.5:1. Meanwhile, the relatively high iodine adsorption value (1141.4 mg/g) was also obtained. Furthermore, the pore structural characterization of activated carbon was analyzed. The analyzed results showed a larger Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (1254.5 m(2)/g) and a higher microporosity ratio (87.2%), a bigger total pore volume (0.6565 m(3)/g), but a smaller average pore size (2.093 nm), which demonstrated the obtained activated carbon possessed strong adsorption capacity and well-developed microporous structure. This research could not only establish the foundation of utilizing chestnut burs to prepare activated carbon, but also provide the basis for exploitation of Chinese chestnut by-products. IMPLICATIONS Because Chinese chestnut burs are the by-products and usually discarded upon harvesting subsequently, the utilization of chestnut burs as a potential source of activated carbon is of great profit to the chestnut processing industries.

Abstract
The effect of acid treatments with HCl and HNO3 on the surface area and surface chemistry of three granular activated carbons was studied. These supports were characterized and the hydrochloric acid treatment leads to the best activated carbon support (AC2-C). The catalytic behavior of Pt, Ru and Fe (1 wt.%) supported on granular activated carbon treated with HCl was tested in the phenylamine continuous catalytic wet air oxidation in a three-phase, high-pressure catalytic reactor over a range of reaction temperatures 130-170ºC and total pressure of 1.0-3.0 MPa at LHSV = 0.4-1 h(-1), whereas the phenylamine concentration range and the catalyst loading were 5-16 mol.m(-3) and 0.5-1.5 g, respectively. Activity as well as conversion varied as a function of the metal, the catalyst preparation method and operation conditions. Higher activities were obtained with Pt incorporated on hydrochloric acid -treated activated carbon by the ion exchange method. In steady state, approximately 98% phenylamine conversion, 77% of TOC and 94% of COD removal, was recorded at 150ºC, 11 mol m(-3) of phenylamine concentration and 1.5 g of catalyst, and the selectivity to non-organic compounds was 78%. Several reaction intermediaries were detected. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood model gave an excellent fit of the kinetic data of phenylamine continuous catalytic wet air oxidation over the catalysts of this work.

Abstract
This work describes a novel method for the preparation of titanium oxide nanoparticles supported on amorphous carbon with nanoporosity (Ti/NC) via the post-synthetic modification of a Zn-based MOF with an amine functionality, IRMOF-3, with titanium isopropoxide followed by its carbothermal pyrolysis. This material exhibited high purity, high surface area (>1000 m(2)/g), and a high dispersion of metal oxide nanoparticles while maintaining a small particle size (~4 nm). The material was shown to be a promising catalyst for oxidative desulfurization of diesel using dibenzothiophene as a model compound as it exhibited enhanced catalytic activity as compared with titanium oxide supported on activated carbon via the conventional incipient wetness impregnation method. The formation mechanism of Ti/NC was also proposed based on results obtained when the carbothermal reduction temperature was varied.
