Abstract
Although polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based surfactants are widely used in various industries due to their wide range of hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) values, their possible by-product, 1,4-dioxane, has been listed as a reasonably anticipated human carcinogen, which may limit their applications in fields closely related to the human body. Polyglycerol fatty acid esters (PGFEs), a class of surfactants based on polyglycerol (another polyether), also have a wide range of HLB values that can be adjust by varying the degree of polymerization of the polyglycerol, the length of the fatty acid carbon chain, or the degree of esterification, but do not have the risks caused by 1,4-dioxane. In addition, all the raw materials (glycerol and fatty acids) required for the preparation of PGFEs can be obtained via hydrolysis of renewable vegetable oils. Therefore, PGFEs, as new eco-friendly and biodegradable non-ionic surfactants, have been proposed as potential green alternatives to PEG-based non-ionic surfactants. This review summarizes the properties of PGFEs specifically including their HLB, surface properties, phase behaviors, stabilizing effect on foams and emulsions, and stability, and highlights their potential applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals observed in the last decade.

Abstract
To date majority of bakery products are manufactured using emulsifiers in paste or gel form that restricts and causes many problems of storage, processing, and handling at the commercial level. Therefore, new developments are required to resolve the issues of the bakery industry. This review discusses the importance of α-tending emulsifiers in the bakery industry and the action of the α-form to produce superior quality products. Further, to produce desired results α-form of emulsifiers blend should be stable and functional at different operating and storage conditions. Emulsifiers in gel or paste form do not maintain the active α-gel phase over a longer storage period. Using emulsifiers blend in powder form can be a solution to all the mentioned difficulties. With the development of new technologies like spray drying and encapsulation has opened new doors to utilize emulsifiers blend in powder form. Few manufactures have tapped this opportunity and have developed improver powder that offers superior quality products as well as processing, storage, and handling benefits and is easy to use. Improver powder maintains its active and functional α-form when stored at ambient temperature. This development also increases the scope of dry premixes in the market and consumers can make products of their choice in the kitchen with minimal effort.

Abstract
Here, we report on the development of lipid-based nanostructures containing zidovudine (1 mg/mL) and lamivudine (0.5 mg/mL) for oral administration in the pediatric population, eliminating the use of organic solvents, which is in accordance with green chemistry principles. The formulations were obtained by ultrasonication using monoolein (MN) or phytantriol (PN), which presented narrow size distributions with similar mean particle sizes (~150 nm) determined by laser diffraction. The zeta potential and the pH values of the formulations were around -4.0 mV and 6.0, respectively. MN presented a slightly higher incorporation rate compared to PN. Nanoemulsions were obtained when using monoolein, while cubosomes were obtained when using phytantriol, as confirmed by Small-Angle X-ray Scattering. The formulations enabled drug release control and protection against acid degradation. The drug incorporation was effective and the analyses using an electronic tongue indicated a difference in palatability between the nanotechnological samples in comparison with the drug solutions. In conclusion, PN was considered to have the strongest potential as a novel oral formulation for pediatric HIV treatment.

Abstract
Curcumin is one of the most studied chemo-preventive agents, which may cause suppression, retardation, or inversion of carcinogenesis. But its application is currently limited because of its poor water-solubility and bioaccessibility. A curcumin O/W emulsion was prepared by high-pressure homogenization, using triglyceride monolaurate as an emulsifier and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) as the oil phase. The effects of emulsifiers, emulsifier concentration, oil type, oil-to-water ratio, and homogenization pressure and processing cycles on the physical stability and droplet size distribution of curcumin-encapsulated O/W emulsions were evaluated in this study. The results showed that the mean droplet size of the O/W emulsions remained remarkably stable during 60 days of storage under both light and dark conditions. Curcumin retentions in O/W emulsions after 60 days of storage under light and dark conditions were 97.9% and 81.6%, respectively. In addition, during the simulated gastrointestinal digestion process, the mean droplet size of the O/W emulsions increased from 260 nm to 2743 nm after incubation with simulated gastric fluid (SGF) for 24 h, while the mean droplet size remained unchanged after incubation with simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). The results displayed negligible changes in curcumin content during incubation with simulated gastrointestinal fluids, indicating that effective protection of curcumin was achieved by encapsulation in the O/W emulsion. It is expected that curcumin will acquire high bioaccessibility and bioavailability when the O/W emulsion is to be used in clinical applications.

Abstract
Isoliquiritigenin (ILQ) has a number of biological activities such as antitumor and anti-inflammatory effects. However, biomedical applications of ILQ are impeded by its poor aqueous solubility. Therefore, in this research, we prepared a novel ILQ-loaded nanoemulsion, i.e., ILQ-NE, which consisted of Labrafil® M 1944 CS (oil), Cremophor® EL (surfactant), ILQ, and phosphate-buffered saline, by employing a combined sonication (high-energy) and phase-inversion composition (low-energy) method (denoted as the SPIC method). The ILQ-NE increased the ILQ solubility ~1000 times more than its intrinsic solubility. It contained spherical droplets with a mean diameter of 44.10 ± 0.28 nm and a narrow size distribution. The ILQ loading capacity was 4%. The droplet size of ILQ-NE remained unchanged during storage at 4 °C for 56 days. Nanoemulsion encapsulation effectively prevented ILQ from degradation under ultraviolet light irradiation, and enhanced the ILQ in vitro release rate. In addition, ILQ-NE showed higher cellular uptake and superior cytotoxicity to 4T1 cancer cells compared with free ILQ formulations. In conclusion, ILQ-NE may facilitate the biomedical application of ILQ, and the SPIC method presents an attractive avenue for bridging the merits and eliminating the shortcomings of traditional high-energy methods and low-energy methods.
