Microencapsulation of 2-octylcyanoacrylate tissue adhesive for self-healing acrylic bone cement

Here, we report the first phase of developing self-healing acrylic bone cement: the preparation and characterization of polyurethane (PUR) microcapsules containing a medical cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive. Capsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization of a toluene-2,4-diisocyanate-based polyurethane prepolymer with 1,4-butanediol to encapsulate 2-octylcyanoacrylate (OCA). Various capsule characteristics, including: resultant morphology, average size and size distribution, shell thickness, content and reactivity of encapsulated agent, and shelf life are investigated and their reliance on solvent type and amount, surfactant type and amount, temperature, pH, agitation rate, reaction time, and mode of addition of the oil phase to the aqueous phase are presented. Capsules had average diameters ranging from 74 to 222 μm and average shell thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 6 μm. The capsule content was determined via thermogravimetric analysis and subsequent analysis of the capsules following up to 8 weeks storage revealed minimal loss of core contents. Mechanical testing of OCA-containing capsules showed individual capsules withstood compressive forces up to a few tenths of Newtons, and the contents released from crushed capsules generated tensile adhesive forces of a few Newtons. Capsules were successfully mixed into the poly(methyl methacrylate) bone cement, surviving the mixing process, exposure to methyl methacrylate monomer, and the resulting exothermic matrix curing.

Continuous production of functionalized polymer particles employing the phase separation in polymer blend films

This study reports a continuous prepartion of spherical or hemispherical polymer particles simply utilizing the phase separation in polymer blend films during the coating process. We took an advantage of the strong phase separation between a water-soluble crystalline polymer as a matrix and hydrophobic polymers as minor components. We demonstrated the prepartion of water-soluble polystyrene (PS) particles, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA)-functionalized PS particles for protein separation, and semiconducting poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) particles. The sizes of the particles could be controlled by adjusting the film thickness and weight fraction of the minor component polymers in the blend film. It provides a simple facile way to prepare polymer particles in a continous process.

The Fabrication and Progress of Core-Shell Composite Materials

Core-shell materials, in which a layer or multilayer of inorganic or organic material surrounds an inorganic or organic particle core, have been investigated both as a means to improve the stability and surface chemistry of the core particle and as a way of accessing unique physical and chemical properties that are not possible from one material alone. As a result, the fabrication of core-shell particles is attracting a great deal of interest because of their unique properties and potential applicability in catalysis, semiconductors, drug delivery, enzyme immobilization, molecular recognition, chemical sensing, etc. As evidenced by the literature described and discussed in this review, a basic understanding of the mechanism and recent progress in production methods have enabled the fabrication of core-shell particles with unique and tailored properties for various applications in materials science.

Production of uniform-sized polymer core-shell microcapsules by coaxial electrospraying

Spherical polymeric core-shell microcapsules in uniform size were produced by electrospraying with a coaxial nozzle setup. Contrary to the usual coaxial setup, the inner nozzle was slightly bent to touch the inside wall of the outer nozzle. A polymer solution for the core was introduced through the outer nozzle, and the other solution for the shell was supplied through the inner nozzle. The setup greatly increased reproduction of the same results. As a proof of the concept, core-shell microcapsules consisting of a PS or PMMA core and a PCL shell (PS@PCL, PMMA@PCL) were produced. When the volumetric feed rate of the shell-forming PCL solution was higher than that of the core-forming PS or PMMA solution the core-shell structures in uniform size were readily obtained. In contrast, irregular morphologies were observed when the feed rate of the PCL solution was slower or equal to that of the PS or PMMA solution. The size of the colloid was dependent on the relative feed ratio between the polymer solutions as well as the magnitude of applied voltage.
