Wiki technology enhanced group project to promote active learning in a neuroscience course for first-year medical students: an exploratory study

Comparison of Team-Based Learning versus Traditional Lectures in Neuroanatomy: Medical Student Knowledge and Satisfaction

Neuroanatomy is often considered a difficult subject to teach, due to its broad scope, multitude of terms, and high degree of complexity. Thus, newer educational strategies that facilitate learning while also stimulating students by allowing increased student autonomy and group discussions should be carefully considered. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of introducing team-based learning (TBL) in the traditional discipline of neuroanatomy and to measure student knowledge acquisition and perception relative to traditional lectures (TL). A quasi-experimental, nonrandomized study was performed using two consecutive TBL classes (intervention group, n = 157 students, 25% content using TBL) with a TL class (control group, n = 76). Team-based learning sessions included all stages according to the classic description of the method. Student knowledge acquisition was assessed in regularly scheduled tests during the discipline, and their perception regarding TBL was evaluated using a questionnaire (developed by the authors). The groups presented a similar sociodemographic profile (sex and age) and the same performance in another anatomy discipline before the study. Team-based learning was significantly associated with greater acceptance, higher motivation, better student perception, and feelings that the methodology was able to integrate clinical and basic sciences. Nevertheless, according to tests, knowledge acquisition was similar between the TBL and lectures. In conclusion, since TBL is comparable to TL for knowledge acquisition, TBL seems to be a promising strategy to improve the teaching of neuroanatomy in medical schools. It fosters group discussions and increases satisfaction and the perception of integration between clinical and basic sciences.

Radiation therapy students' perceptions of a wiki

BACKGROUND

This pilot study aimed to gain the perceptions of first-year students using a wiki as a learning tool for the Bachelor of Radiation Therapy degree in New Zealand. Literature suggests that wikis have great potential as an educational tool for both lecturers and students, because they encourage collaborative learning and resource sharing. In 2015, the 'Otago Wiki' platform was introduced as a part of the degree.

METHODS

The first-year students were allocated into groups of four. Using the 'Otago Wiki' tool, each group created their own wiki page by addressing assigned tasks over the course of the year that related to a fictional patient. At the end of the year they were invited to participate in an online Survey Monkey^™ questionnaire, which 15/26 students completed. We used a conventional approach to code the free-text responses for our content analysis.

RESULTS

Three main themes emerged from the qualitative data: group work experience; developing a greater self-awareness of radiation therapy; and improving the learning experience. Although there is room for improvement, the quantitative data indicate that most students found the wiki to be a valuable group exercise, helping them to understand the patient experience.

CONCLUSION

Overall, the students' perceptions of the wiki as a learning tool indicated that it was a worthwhile experience. Moving forward, wikis will continue to be used and incorporated into other modules in the first year. Setting clearer goals for each task would enable the students to use their time more efficiently in the future. Literature suggests that wikis have great potential as an educational tool for both lecturers and students.

Mental Health Education and Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) in Pre-registration Nursing Degrees: Follow the Leaders?

Virtual learning environments (VLEs) are now commonly used, worldwide, as teaching and learning platforms for pre-registration nursing education. However, there is only limited evidence in the research literature to suggest that VLEs are employed to support the education of student nurses about mental health and illness. This article describes the work of mental health nurse educators who have taken the lead by providing case-based simulations on VLEs, thereby enabling students to acquire knowledge and develop the clinical skills required for practice in mental health settings. Benefits of VLEs include their flexibility and accessibility, and also the opportunity they provide for students to engage with Web 2.0 technologies. Leadership in education must include the utilization of the most current pedagogical tools and strategies, as well as staying abreast of contemporary evidence-based practices in clinical settings, to support the knowledge acquisition and practice-based learning of the registered nurses (RNs) of the future.
