Abstract
A growing body of evidence suggests that the effects of poor oral hygiene extend beyond the oral cavity and are associated with a variety of systemic diseases, including asthma. Asthma, which results in symptoms of cough, wheezing, and dyspnoea, and is characterized by airflow limitation with variability and (partial or complete) reversibility, is amongst the most prevalent respiratory diseases with approximately 262 million patients worldwide, and its prevalence and disease burden is on the increase. While asthma can occur at a young age, it can also develop later in life and affects a variety of age groups. Both of these diseases have a chronic course, and various researchers have suggested a link between the two. In this article, we aim to provide a literature review focusing on the association between the two diseases. The results demonstrate that medications (primarily, inhaler medicine), hypoxia induced by asthma, and the breathing behaviour of patients potentially trigger periodontal disease. In contrast, oral periodontopathogenic microorganisms and the inflammatory mediators produced by them may be involved in the onset and/or exacerbation of asthma. Common contributing factors, such as smoking, gastro-oesophageal reflux, and type-2 inflammation, should also be considered when evaluating the relationship between the two diseases.

Abstract
The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasing worldwide and is currently the third leading cause of death globally. The long-term inhalation of toxic substances, mainly cigarette smoke, deteriorates pulmonary function over time, resulting in the development of COPD in adulthood. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that affects most adults and is caused by the bacteria within dental plaque. These bacteria dissolve the gums around the teeth and the bone that supports them, ultimately leading to tooth loss. Periodontal disease and COPD share common risk factors, such as aging and smoking. Other similarities include local chronic inflammation and links with the onset and progression of systemic diseases such as ischemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus. Understanding whether interventions for periodontal disease improve the disease trajectory of COPD (and vice versa) is important, given our rapidly aging society. This review focuses on the putative relationship between COPD and periodontal disease while exploring current evidence and future research directions.

Abstract
Asthma is a disease marked by recurrent dyspnea caused by spasmodic bronchoconstriction. Bronchial asthma is a serious global problem that has steadily increased in prevalence during the past two decades. Oral manifestations of pediatric patients suffering from bronchial asthma are an increased upper anterior and total anterior facial height, higher palatal vaults, greater overjets, and a higher prevalence of posterior crossbites. Dental treatment of such patients requires the role of a pedodontist. Behavior management techniques, conscious sedation techniques along with medical management, and comprehensive dental treatment by a pediatric dentist may prove beneficial to such patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selective immunoglobulin A (IgA) deficiency is characterized by a high incidence of both recurrent infections and atopic diseases. Asthma is one of the most common lung diseases affecting around 300 million people worldwide and is associated with risk of serious pneumococcal disease and microbial infections. Multiple studies have attributed this to impaired innate and adaptive immunity in asthmatics. An additional probable hypothesis is the existence of an underlying primary immunodeficiency (PID), such as selective IgA deficiency (sIgAD). AIM To assess the prevalence of selective IgA deficiency and its correlation to recurrent infections in asthmatic patients. METHODS A case-control study was conducted on 80 subjects who were divided into 3 groups: 20 Asthmatic patients with recurrent chest infections (Group A), 20 asthmatic patients without recurrent chest infections (Group B) and 40 healthy controls (Group C). RESULTS On comparing the 3 studied groups, there was a statistically significant difference between the three groups (p = ˂0.001) concerning serum IgA. The mean serum IgA was statistically significantly lower in Group A&B than in Group C. Furthermore, it was significantly lower in Group A than in Group B and C (p1,2 <0.002 and <0.001*, respectively). The percentage of selective IgA deficiency or partial IgA deficiency in asthmatic patients was 56% (26 patients). Group A showed a statistically significant higher percentage of selective/partial IgA deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It was reported that inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) treatment may affect local immunity and microbial community of the airway. However, whether ICS treatment increases the risk of influenza in patients with asthma remains unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to compare the risk of influenza between ICS and non-ICS treatment in patients with asthma. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Clinical Trials.gov were searched from inception until November 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included that compared ICS treatment with non-ICS treatment on the risk of influenza in patients with asthma. Meta-analyses were conducted by the Peto approach and Mantel-Haenszel approach with corresponding 95% CIs. RESULTS Nine trials involving 6486 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The risk of influenza was not different between ICS treatment and the control groups (Peto OR: 1.01, 95% CI 0.74-1.37, P = 0.95). The results of subgroup analyses based on durations (long-term and short-term treatment), doses (high-, medium- and low-dose treatment) and types (fluticasone and budesonide treatment) of ICS were consistent with the above pooled results. Moreover, subgroup analysis based on patients' age also revealed that use of ICS did not increase the risk of influenza. Results of the two meta-analysis approaches were similar. CONCLUSIONS Use of ICS does not increase the risk of influenza in patients with asthma. This study adds to safety evidence of ICS as a regular controller treatment for patients with asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a public health emergency of international concern. The global population lacks immunity to COVID-19 and is generally susceptible. Underlying conditions, especially chronic respiratory diseases, may affect progression, treatment and prognosis of COVID-19. CASE SUMMARY We report a patient with confirmed COVID-19 combined with asthma. It took 41 d from disease onset to discharge to obtain two negative tests for this coronavirus. CONCLUSION This case indicates the dynamic clinical characteristics, laboratory and computed tomography findings and adjustment of treatment, and the possible relationship between glucocorticoid therapy and coronavirus clearance.

Abstract
Candida albicans is a commensal organism that causes life-threatening or life-altering opportunistic infections. Treatment of Candida infections is limited by the paucity of antifungal drug classes. Naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides are promising agents for drug development. CCL28 is a CC chemokine that is abundant in saliva and has in vitro antimicrobial activity. In this study, we examine the in vivo Candida killing capacity of CCL28 in oropharyngeal candidiasis as well as the spectrum and mechanism of anti-Candida activity. In the mouse model of oropharyngeal candidiasis, application of wild-type CCL28 reduces oral fungal burden in severely immunodeficient mice without causing excessive inflammation or altering tissue neutrophil recruitment. CCL28 is effective against multiple clinical strains of C. albicans Polyamine protein transporters are not required for CCL28 anti-Candida activity. Both structured and unstructured CCL28 proteins show rapid and sustained fungicidal activity that is superior to that of clinical antifungal agents. Application of wild-type CCL28 to C. albicans results in membrane disruption as measured by solute movement, enzyme leakage, and induction of negative Gaussian curvature on model membranes. Membrane disruption is reduced in CCL28 lacking the functional C-terminal tail. Our results strongly suggest that CCL28 can exert antifungal activity in part via membrane permeation and has potential for development as an anti-Candida therapeutic agent without inflammatory side effects.

Abstract
CONTEXT Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and pneumonia are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world, and asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the risk of IPD or pneumonia among children with asthma after the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs). DATA SOURCES Four electronic databases were searched. STUDY SELECTION We selected all cohorts or case-control studies of IPD and pneumonia in populations who already received PCV (largely 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine), but not 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide, in which authors reported data for children with asthma and in which healthy controls were included, without language restriction. DATA EXTRACTION Two reviewers independently reviewed all studies. Primary outcomes were occurrence of IPD and pneumonia. Secondary outcomes included mortality, hospital admissions, hospital length of stay, ICU admission, respiratory support, costs, and additional medication use. RESULTS Five studies met inclusion criteria; of those, 3 retrospective cohorts (∼26 million person-years) and 1 case-control study (N = 3294 children) qualified for the meta-analysis. Children with asthma had 90% higher odds of IPD than healthy controls (odds ratio = 1.90; 95% confidence interval = 1.63-2.11; I2 = 1.7%). Pneumonia was also more frequent among children with asthma than among controls, and 1 study reported that pneumonia-associated costs increased by asthma severity. LIMITATIONS None of the identified studies had information of asthma therapy or compliance. CONCLUSIONS Despite PCV vaccination, children with asthma continue to have a higher risk of IPD than children without asthma. Further research is needed to assess the need for supplemental 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination in children with asthma, regardless of their use of oral steroids.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between different factors in saliva and dental caries experience in children with bronchial asthma. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 60 asthmatic children and 60 healthy controls of both genders with age ranging from 4- to 12-year-old. The asthmatics were grouped according to disease severity into mild, moderate, or severe asthma. All the children were clinically examined to assess their dental caries experience (deft/DMFT), and stimulated saliva samples were collected to measure the saliva pH, flow rate, ά-amylase, and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA)-level changes. The data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS program (v. 23) to test for significance at p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS Asthmatic children presented significantly higher deft mean value (6.77 ± 1.69), as well as significantly reduced stimulated saliva flow (0.82 ± 0.2) and sIgA (29.42 ± 6.31) when compared to healthy control. The sIgA of asthmatics showed statistically significant negative correlation with deft and DMFT. Severe asthmatics presented significantly the lowest sIgA mean level (23.61 ± 5.33) and the most reduced saliva flow rate (0.64 ± 0.20). CONCLUSION The reduction in saliva flow rate and secretory immunoglobulin A render asthmatic children more prone to increased dental caries progression mainly of primary dentition. Abstract
BACKGROUND Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of airways. The disease itself along with the principal medication used makes the oral cavity susceptible to most common opportunistic infection, i.e., oral candidiasis. There are many species of Candida causing oral candidiasis, but the most prevalent among them is Candida albicans. Hence, assessing C. albicans count in response to disease and its treatment is necessary. This enables us to educate asthma patients about side effects of medication and highlight the necessity for oral health care, thereby improving their quality of life. AIMS The present study aims to evaluate the effects of asthma and its medication on C. albicans count in saliva samples of asthmatic adult patients taking medication for 3-5 years and compare C. albicans count in saliva samples among cases and controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty asthmatic adults taking medication for asthma since 3-5 years' age ranging from 20 to 50 years and equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy participants were included in the study. In both groups, saliva was collected and inoculated on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar culture plates for estimation of C. albicans counts. C. albicans counts were assessed in colony-forming unit/milliliter. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Mann-Whitney U-test and Fisher's exact t-test were used. RESULTS The C. albicans count is significantly higher among asthmatics than healthy individuals. CONCLUSIONS The present study concludes that there is increased candidal growth among asthmatics as compared to their normal healthy counterpart.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our aim is to study the association between bronchial asthma (BA) and periodontitis in Jordan. METHODS A case control study of 260 subjects; 130 with BA and 130 without BA (controls) were recruited at a university hospital in Jordan. BA cases were physician-diagnosed and on anti-asthma medications for 12 months. Periodontitis was defined as the presence of ≥ 4 teeth with ≥ 1 site with probing pocket depth (PPD) ≥ 4 mm and clinical attachment level (CAL) ≥ 3 mm. RESULTS Mean age of participants was 45.3 years (range, 18-65) and 58.1% were females. Patients with BA had lower education and tended to live in rural areas. Periodontitis was present in 52 (40.0%) patients with BA and 26 (20.0%) in the control group, p < 0.005. Binary logistic regression indicated that patients with BA were more likely to have periodontitis than controls [adjusted odd ratio (OR) = 2.91, 95% CI (1.39-6.11), p = 0.005]. Patients with BA had higher percentage of sites with: PPD ≥ 3 mm, CAL ≥ 3 mm, and CAL ≥ 4 mm than controls, p < 0.05. The risk of periodontitis [OR = 5.27, 95% CI (1.59-17.51)] and CAL ≥ 3 mm were higher in patients on oral corticosteroids compared to inhaled corticosteroids, p < 0.05. CONCLUSIONS Adult Jordanians with bronchial asthma are at higher risk of periodontitis, particularly those on oral corticosteroids. Large and longitudinal studies are needed to better understand this significant association.

Abstract
CONTEXT Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are associated with an increased risk of pneumonia in adult patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. OBJECTIVE To assess the association between ICS use and risk of pneumonia and other respiratory infections in children with asthma. DATA SOURCES We searched PubMed from inception until May 2015. We also searched clinicaltrials.gov and databases of pharmaceutical manufacturers. STUDY SELECTION We selected randomized trials that compared ICS with placebo for at least 4 weeks in children with asthma. DATA EXTRACTION We included 39 trials, of which 31 trials with 11 615 patients contributed data to meta-analyses. RESULTS The incidence of pneumonia was 0.58% (44/7465) in the ICS group and 1.51% (63/4150) in the placebo group. The meta-analysis of 9 trials that revealed at least 1 event of pneumonia revealed a reduced risk of pneumonia in patients taking ICS (risk ratio [RR]: 0.65; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.44 to 0.94). Using risk difference as effect measure, the meta-analysis including all 31 trials revealed no significant difference in the risk of pneumonia between the ICS and placebo groups (risk difference: -0.1%; 95% CI: -0.3% to 0.2%). No significant association was found between ICS and risk of pharyngitis (RR: 1.01; 95% CI: 0.87 to 1.18), otitis media (RR: 1.07; 95% CI: 0.83 to 1.37), and sinusitis (RR: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.76 to 1.05). LIMITATIONS Lack of clearly defined criteria for respiratory infections and possible publication bias. CONCLUSIONS Regular use of ICS may not increase the risk of pneumonia or other respiratory infections in children with asthma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is growing knowledge about the immunoregulatory and possibly preventative roles of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in allergic diseases. This study aimed to investigate secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) levels in the nasal fluid of children who were either being treated for their allergic rhinitis (AR) with intranasal mometasone furoate or were not receiving treatment. METHODS The study population contained 55 children with persistent AR. Group I included 27 newly diagnosed AR patients not taking any medication and group II included 28 patients treated with intranasal steroids for at least 6 months. 27 healthy control subjects were also enrolled in the study. Total symptom scores (TSS) were calculated for each patient. Nasal secretions were obtained using a new modified polyurethane sponge absorption method, and samples were analysed by ELISA. RESULTS The median value for nasal fluid SIgA level in each group was 127.2μg/ml (interquartile range; 67.3-149.6) in group I, 133.9μg/ml (102.1-177.8) in group II and 299.8μg/ml (144.5-414.0) in the control group. Groups I and II both had statistically significant reductions in nasal fluid SIgA levels compared to the control group (p<0.001). However, there was no statistically significant difference between groups I and II (p=0.35). A statistically significant and negative correlation also existed between TSS and nasal fluid SIgA levels in both groups I and II (p=0.006, rho=-0.512 and p=0.01, rho=-0.481, respectively). CONCLUSIONS SIgA levels in the nasal fluid are significantly reduced in children with AR independent of treatment and are negatively correlated with the TSS.

Abstract
Oral candidiasis is a disease caused by opportunistic species of Candida that normally reside on human mucosal surfaces. The transition of Candida from budding yeast to filamentous hyphae allows for covalent attachment to oral epithelial cells, followed by biofilm formation, invasion and tissue damage. In this study, combinations of Lactobacillus plantarum SD5870, Lactobacillus helveticus CBS N116411 and Streptococcus salivarius DSM 14685 were assessed for their ability to inhibit the formation of and disrupt Candida albicans biofilms. Co-incubation with probiotic supernatants under hyphae-inducing conditions reduced C. albicans biofilm formation by >75 % in all treatment groups. Likewise, combinations of live probiotics reduced biofilm formation of C. albicans by >67 %. When live probiotics or their supernatants were overlaid on preformed C. albicans biofilms, biofilm size was reduced by >63 and >65 % respectively. Quantitative real-time PCR results indicated that the combined supernatants of SD5870 and CBS N116411 significantly reduced the expression of several C. albicans genes involved in the yeast-hyphae transition: ALS3 (adhesin/invasin) by 70 % (P < 0.0001), EFG1 (hyphae-specific gene activator) by 47 % (P = 0.0061), SAP5 (secreted protease) by 49 % (P < 0.0001) and HWP1 (hyphal wall protein critical to biofilm formation) by >99 % (P < 0.0001). These findings suggest the combination of L. plantarum SD5870, L. helveticus CBS N116411 and S. salivarius DSM 14685 is effective at both preventing the formation of and removing preformed C. albicans biofilms. Our novel results point to the downregulation of several Candida genes critical to the yeast-hyphae transition, biofilm formation, tissue invasion and cellular damage.

Abstract
Background Behçet's syndrome (BS) is a multisystem immune-related disease of unknown etiology. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by the presence of idiopathic oral ulceration without extraoral manifestation. The interplay between the oral microbial communities and the immune response could play an important role in the etiology and pathogenesis of both BS and RAS. Objective To investigate the salivary and oral mucosal microbial communities in BS and RAS. Methods Purified microbial DNA isolated from saliva samples (54 BS, 25 healthy controls [HC], and 8 RAS) were examined by the human oral microbe identification microarray. Cultivable salivary and oral mucosal microbial communities from ulcer and non-ulcer sites were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight analysis. Mycobacterium spp. were detected in saliva and in ulcer and non-ulcer oral mucosal brush biopsies following culture on Lowenstein-Jensen slopes and Mycobacterial Growth Indicator Tubes. Results There was increased colonization with Rothia denticariosa of the non-ulcer sites of BS and RAS patients (p<0.05). Ulcer sites in BS were highly colonized with Streptococcus salivarius compared to those of RAS (p<0.05), and with Streptococcus sanguinis compared to HC (p<0.0001). Oral mucosa of HC were more highly colonized with Neisseria and Veillonella compared to all studied groups (p<0.0001). Conclusions Despite the uncertainty whether the reported differences in the oral mucosal microbial community of BS and RAS are of causative or reactive nature, it is envisaged that restoring the balance of the oral microbial community of the ulcer sites may be used in the future as a new treatment modality for oral ulceration.

Abstract
To study host-probiotic interactions in parts of the intestine only accessible in humans by surgery (jejunum, ileum and colon), pigs were used as model for humans. Groups of eight 6-week-old pigs were repeatedly orally administered with 5 × 10(12) CFU Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (L. plantarum 299v) or PBS, starting with a single dose followed by three consecutive daily dosings 10 days later. Gene expression was assessed with pooled RNA samples isolated from jejunum, ileum and colon scrapings of the eight pigs per group using Affymetrix porcine microarrays. Comparison of gene expression profiles recorded from L. plantarum 299v-treated pigs with PBS-treated pigs indicated that L. plantarum 299v affected metabolic and immunological processes, particularly in the ileum. A higher expression level of several B cell-specific transcription factors/regulators was observed, suggesting that an influx of B cells from the periphery to the ileum and/or the proliferation of progenitor B cells to IgA-committed plasma cells in the Peyer's patches of the ileum was stimulated. Genes coding for enzymes that metabolize leukotriene B4, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and steroids were regulated in the ileum. Bioinformatics analysis predicted that these metabolites may play a role in the crosstalk between intestinal immune cells and sub-mucosal adipocytes. Together with regulation of genes that repress NFKB- and PPARG-mediated transcription, this crosstalk may contribute to tempering of inflammatory reactions. Furthermore, the enzyme adenosine deaminase, responsible for the breakdown of the anti-inflammatory mediator adenosine, was strongly down-regulated in response to L. plantarum 299v. This suggested that L. plantarum 299v-regulated production of adenosine by immune cells like regulatory T cells may also be a mechanism that tempers inflammation in the ileum, and perhaps also in other parts of the pig's body.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The bronchodilatory effect of mometasone furoate/formoterol fumarate (MF/F) administered by metered-dose inhaler (MDI) with or without a spacer has not been evaluated previously in children aged 5-11 years. METHODS This was a randomized, multicenter, placebo-controlled, single-dose, four-period crossover study. Children with persistent asthma aged 5-11 years participated in this study. Subjects used inhaled corticosteroids with/without long-acting beta-2 agonists for 12 weeks before enrollment and at screening had forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1 ) ≥70% predicted. Subjects received MF/F MDI 100/10 µg with/without spacer (AeroChamber Plus® with Flow-Vu® Anti-Static Valved Holding Chamber), F-Dry Powder Inhaler (F-DPI) 10 µg, and placebo MDI with/without spacer in separate treatment periods. The primary endpoint was FEV1 area under the curve from 0 to 12 hr (AUC0-12hr ) for the comparison of MF/F with spacer versus placebo. Secondary measurements included MF/F without spacer versus placebo, as well as MF/F with spacer versus MF/F without spacer, and F-DPI versus placebo. Analysis was performed with an analysis of covariance model for a crossover study. RESULTS Data from 87 subjects were analyzed. MF/F with spacer demonstrated a larger change in mean FEV1 AUC0-12hr versus placebo (115 vs. -9 mL), with a treatment difference of 124 mL (95% CI 94-154, P < 0.001). Similarly, MF/F without spacer versus placebo resulted in a 102 mL difference in mean-adjusted FEV1 AUC0-12hr (95% CI 73-131, P < 0.001), whereas the difference between MF/F with spacer versus MF/F without spacer was 22 mL (95% CI -8 to 52, P = 0.144). The difference between F-DPI versus placebo was 106 mL (95% CI 77-135, P < 0.001). No unexpected adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS In this trial, MF/F MDI 100/10 µg demonstrated significant bronchodilation in children aged 5-11 years regardless of the use of a spacer. No difference in bronchodilation was observed between MF/F MDI and F-DPI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Recent studies have raised concerns about the link between use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and risk of pneumonia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between ICS and oropharyngeal colonization by Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) among children (up to 18 years old) with asthma. METHODS Two age-matched groups of patients were consecutively recruited: (i) exposed group: children who had persistent asthma and were being treated with daily ICS for at least 30 days and (ii) non-exposed group: children who had asthma and were not being treated with ICS at study entry. Oropharyngeal specimens from the tonsillar area and posterior pharyngeal wall were collected. S. pneumoniae was identified according to National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards recommendations. RESULTS A total of 200 consecutive patients were recruited and 192 (96 in each group) were included in the analysis. In the exposed group, the mean daily dose of ICS was 400 µg of beclomethasone or equivalent and the mean duration of treatment was 8.6 months. The prevalence of oropharyngeal colonization by S. pneumoniae was higher in the exposed group compared with the non-exposed group (27.1% vs 8.3%, P = 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, use of ICS was an independent risk factor for oropharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae, with an adjusted prevalence ratio of 3.75 (95% confidence interval: 1.72-8.18, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Regular use of ICS is associated with an increased risk of having oropharyngeal colonization by S. pneumoniae in children with asthma.

Abstract
The Candida genus expresses virulence factors that, when combined with immunosuppression and other risk factors, can cause different manifestations of oral candidiasis. The treatment of mucosal infections caused by Candida and the elucidation of the disease process have proven challenging. Therefore, the study of experimentally induced oral candidiasis in rats and mice is useful to clarify the etiopathology of this condition, improve diagnosis, and search for new therapeutic options because the disease process in these animals is similar to that of human candidiasis lesions. Here, we describe and discuss new studies involving rat and mouse models of oral candidiasis with respect to methods for inducing experimental infection, methods for evaluating the development of experimental candidiasis, and new treatment strategies for oral candidiasis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Multifactorial etiological factors contribute to denture stomatitis (DS), a type of oral candidiasis; however, unlike other oral candidiasis, DS can occur in a healthy person wearing a denture. In this study, we therefore attempt to explore the association between candida, denture, and mucosal tissue using (1) exfoliative cytology, (2) the candidal levels present in saliva, on mucosal tissues and on denture surfaces, and (3) the salivary flow rate and xerostomic symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study enrolled 32 edentulous participants, 17 without DS as controls and 15 with DS (Newton's classification type II and III). Participants with systemic or other known oral conditions were excluded. Participants completed a xerostomia questionnaire, and salivary flow rates were measured. Samples of unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) and stimulated whole saliva (SWS) were collected. UWS was used for fungal culturing. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain and quantitative exfoliative cytology were performed on samples from affected and unaffected mucosa from each participant. Levels of Candida species (albicans and non-albicans) were determined in salivary samples (expressed as colony-forming units, CFU), as well as from swab samples obtained from denture fitting surfaces, in addition to affected and unaffected mucosa. RESULTS There were no significant differences in salivary flow rates, mucosal wetness, or frequency of reported dry mouth comparing participants with and without DS. Exfoliative cytology of mucosal smears demonstrated significantly higher (p= 0.02) inflammatory cell counts in DS patients, as compared with smears of healthy denture-wearers. Candida albicans was significantly more prevalent in saliva (p= 0.03) and on denture surfaces (p= 0.002) of DS participants, whereas mucosal candidal counts and the presence of cytological hyphae did not show significant difference comparing DS to healthy participants. CONCLUSIONS In this investigation, we presented a unique group of healthy edentulous patients. This population may reflect the general DS population without systemic or other oral diseases. The prominent etiological factor for DS in this population is the presence of candida in denture and saliva. We found that other factors such as saliva flow/xerostomia, fitting of the denture, and the presence of candida in the mucosa, are less important in this population. Therefore, DS treatments in healthy patients should first focus on sanitization of an existing denture and/or fabrication of a new denture.

Abstract
Objective. The prevalence of bronchial asthma is increasing globally by 50% every decade. With more individuals presenting with a medical history of asthma and concurrent medication usage, its impact on oral cavity needs to be recognized. The present study was conducted with an aim to assess the oral health status of individuals with asthma aged 12 years and older and to evaluate the effect of various antiasthma medications on oral health. Materials and Methods. Forty individuals with asthma (22 females and 18 males) between 12 and 66 years of age were included in the study after following extensive exclusion criteria. For all subjects a detailed case history was taken. A thorough oral examination was conducted to determine caries experience, periodontal status, and candidiasis. Furthermore, whole unstimulated saliva was collected for pH estimation and cytological smears obtained for the screening of candidiasis. Results. Of the 40 subjects examined, a history of xerostomia was found in 55%, stomatopyrosis in 22%, and halitosis in 5%. The mean DMFT (decayed, missing, filled teeth) was 4.97. Periodontal treatment need evaluation revealed the requirement for oral hygiene education and professional prophylaxis in most of the subjects. However, no significant correlation was found between use of antiasthma medications and periodontal needs. An acidic pH was found in 52.5% of the subjects and candidiasis was detected in 65%. Conclusion. A high incidence of xerostomia, acidic pH, and candidiasis was found in those having asthma. Studies with a larger sample size may help confirm these findings. However, it is suggested that asthma patients on regular antiasthma treatment need special attention in the area of oral health care.

Abstract
Oral infections caused by yeast of the genus Candida and particularly Candida albicans (oral candidoses) have been recognised throughout recorded history. However, since the 1980s a clear surge of interest and associated research into these infections have occurred. This has largely been due to an increased incidence of oral candidosis over this period, primarily because of the escalation in HIV-infection and the AIDS epidemic. In addition, changes in medical practice leading to a greater use of invasive clinical procedures and a more widespread use of immunosuppressive therapies have also contributed to the problem. Whilst oral candidosis has previously been considered to be a disease mainly of the elderly and very young, its occurrence throughout the general population is now recognised. Candida are true ‘opportunistic pathogens’ and only instigate oral infection when there is an underlying predisposing condition in the host. Treatment of these infections has continued (and in some regards continues) to be problematic because of the potential toxicity of traditional antifungal agents against host cells. The problem has been compounded by the emergence of Candida species other than C. albicans that have inherent resistance against traditional antifungals. The aim of this review is to give the reader a contemporary overview of oral candidosis, the organisms involved, and the management strategies that are currently employed or could be utilised in the future.

Abstract
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes the airways to constrict and produce excess mucus, making breathing difficult. It is characterized by the obstruction of airflow which is variable over a short period of time. This condition is reversible, either spontaneously or can be controlled with the help of drugs. Asthma medication comprises bronchodilators, corticosteroids and anticholinergic drugs. Most of these drugs are inhaled using various forms of inhalers or nebulizers. The effect of these drugs on oral health is the subject of debate among dental practitioners. Patients taking asthma medication may be at risk of dental caries, dental erosion, periodontal diseases and oral candidiasis. Hence, patients with bronchial asthma on medication should receive special prophylactic attention. This article reviews the correlation between asthma and oral health, and suggests various measures to counter possible oral health problems related to asthma.

Abstract
Ciclesonide is a novel inhaled corticosteroid used in the continuous treatment of mild-to-severe asthma. Its formulation and mechanism of action yield a low oral and systemic bioavailability, and high pulmonary deposition. In multiple clinical trials, ciclesonide is at least as effective as either fluticasone propionate or budesonide at symptom control, while in many cases having improved safety outcomes and tolerability. The improved safety and comparable efficacy profiles of ciclesonide demonstrated in current studies could potentially yield a treatment option that may lead to improved adherence and outcome.
