Abstract
Background The role of physical activity (PA) monitoring during the recovery after orthopaedic surgeries is unclear. This study aimed to explore early changes in the pattern and level of PA following orthopedic surgeries. Methods This observational feasibility study included 11 hip replacement patients (four females) with a mean age of 66 years and five knee replacement patients (four females) with a mean age of 65 years. A PA tracker was used to collect the patients' daily PA data, including duration of various activity categories, steps taken, and activity intensity count. The PA tracker recorded data from two weeks prior to surgery until four weeks after the surgery. Ratios of PA parameters for each of the first four weeks following surgery were calculated in relation to preoperative measurements. Results Compared to preoperative measurements, during the first four weeks after the surgery, the time spent in a recumbent position decreased from 112% to 106%, while continuous walking time and activity intensity count increased from 27% to 77% and from 35% to 73%, respectively. Step counts increased from 18% to 67%, and sit-to-stands rose from 65% to 93%. No significant changes were found in sitting, standing, sporadic walk time, and sporadic steps. Conclusion Continuously measuring PA using wearable sensors was feasible in orthopedic patients during the perioperative period. Continuous step count, walking time, activity intensity count showed noticeable changes and stable patterns demonstrating their potential for remote monitoring of patients during the early postoperative period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As digital technologies and especially artificial intelligence (AI) become increasingly important in health care, it is essential to determine whether and why potential users intend to use related health information systems (HIS). Several theories exist, but they focus mainly on aspects of health care or information systems, in addition to general psychological theories, and hence provide a small number of variables to explain future behavior. Thus, research that provides a larger number of variables by combining several theories from health care, information systems, and psychology is necessary. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the intention to use new HIS for decisions concerning short- and long-term medical treatments using an integrated approach with several variables to explain future behavior. METHODS We developed an integrated theoretical model based on theories from health care, information systems, and psychology that allowed us to analyze the duality approach of adaptive and nonadaptive appraisals and their influence on the intention to use HIS. We applied the integrated theoretical model to the short-term treatment using AI-based HIS for surgery and the long-term treatment of diabetes tracking using survey data with structured equation modeling. To differentiate between certain levels of AI involvement, we used several scenarios that include treatments by physicians only, physicians with AI support, and AI only to understand how individuals perceive the influence of AI. RESULTS Our results showed that for short- and long-term treatments, the variables perceived threats, fear (disease), perceived efficacy, attitude (HIS), and perceived norms are important to consider when determining the intention to use AI-based HIS. Furthermore, the results revealed that perceived efficacy and attitude (HIS) are the most important variables to determine intention to use for all treatments and scenarios. In contrast, abilities (HIS) were important for short-term treatments only. For our 9 scenarios, adaptive and nonadaptive appraisals were both important to determine intention to use, depending on whether the treatment is known. Furthermore, we determined R² values that varied between 57.9% and 81.7% for our scenarios, which showed that the explanation power of our model is medium to good. CONCLUSIONS We contribute to HIS literature by highlighting the importance of integrating disease- and technology-related factors and by providing an integrated theoretical model. As such, we show how adaptive and nonadaptive appraisals should be arranged to report on medical decisions in the future, especially in the short and long terms. Physicians and HIS developers can use our insights to identify promising rationale for HIS adoption concerning short- and long-term treatments and adapt and develop HIS accordingly. Specifically, HIS developers should ensure that future HIS act in terms of HIS functions, as our study shows that efficient HIS lead to a positive attitude toward the HIS and ultimately to a higher intention to use.

Abstract
Individuals have increasingly high expectations of return to activity following total hip replacement (THR) surgery. The current literature demonstrates marked improvements in pain following THR. However, there is limited evidence showing objective improvement in daily activity. This randomized pilot trial aimed to determine the effect of an intervention where outdoor walking distance is used as a goal to increase daily activity of older adults using a commercial activity monitor at 3 to 6 months post THR. Findings suggested that the participants in the intervention group had higher activity levels after THR, compared to those in the control group. The Cohen's effect sizes were larger for the changes in the gait, Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, and Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale data in the intervention group in contrast to the control group. However, further research with a larger sample size is required to provide tangible evidence on the significance of the effect of the purposeful walk compared to step count.

Abstract
Total joint replacement (TJR) is performed in an outpatient setting for cost containment and reimbursement changes. However, outpatient readmission to the hospital within 30-90 days postoperatively can be costly. Increases in readmission to the hospital less than 30 days postoperatively increase healthcare expenditure and can leave surgical centers without reimbursement. The purpose of the integrative review was to examine 30-day readmission rates for adults post-outpatient TJR within a 12- to 14-week time frame using the recovery messaging application following discharge. A literature search was conducted, and articles were included if they were peer-reviewed academic journals written in English between 2017 and 2022. Fifteen articles were included and evaluated using the John Hopkins evidence summary table to assess the evidence level. The literature analysis identified three themes after using the smartphone application: (a) reducing hospital 30- day readmissions, (b) increasing patient engagement and early mobility, and (c) improving patient outcomes and satisfaction. The findings of this integrative review indicate that using an evidence-based intervention, such as the smartphone application for recovery messaging, can reduce less than 30-day hospital readmissions after outpatient TJR, thus reducing healthcare costs. Future studies should evaluate specific smartphone applications after other general surgical procedures.

Abstract
The innovation of wearable devices is advancing rapidly. Activity monitors can be used to improve the total hip replacement (THR) patients' recovery process and reduce costs. This systematic review assessed the body-worn accelerometers used in studies to enhance the rehabilitation process and monitor THR patients. Electronic databases such as Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews library, CINAHL CompleteVR, Science Citation Index, and MedlineVR from January 2000 to January 2022 were searched. Due to inclusion criteria, fourteen eligible studies that utilised commercial wearable technology to monitor physical activity both before and after THR were identified. Their evidence quality was assessed with RoB 2.0 and ROBINS-I. This study demonstrates that wearable device technology might be feasible to predict, monitor, and detect physical activity following THR. They could be used as a motivational tool to increase patients' mobility and enhance the recovery process. Also, wearable activity monitors could provide a better insight into the individual's activity level in contrast to subjective self-reported questionnaires. However, they have some limitations, and further evidence is needed to establish this technology as the primary device in THR rehabilitation.

Abstract
Purpose Commercially available smartphone apps and wearable devices have proven valuable in a variety of clinical settings, yet their utility in measuring physical activity and monitoring patient status following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains unclear. Methods A systematic review was performed to assess the evidence supporting the use of smartphone apps and wearable devices to assist rehabilitation interventions following TKA. A search was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane, Medline, and Web of Science databases in September 2021. Results One hundred and seventy-six studies were retrieved, of which 15 met inclusion criteria, including 6 randomized control trials. Four of these studies utilized smartphone apps, seven utilized wearable devices, and four utilized a combination of both. A total of 1607 TKA patients participated in the included studies. For primary outcomes, three reported on device accuracy, three on recovery prediction, two on functional recovery, two on physical activity promotion, two on patient compliance, two on pain control, and one on healthcare utilization. Conclusion Commercially available smartphone apps and wearable devices were shown to capably monitor physical activity and improve patient engagement following TKA, making them potentially viable adjuncts or replacements to traditional rehabilitation programs. Components of interventions such as step goals, app-based patient engagement platforms, and patient-specific benchmarks for recovery may improve effectiveness. However, future research should focus on the economics of implementation, long-term outcomes, and optimization of compliance and accuracy when using these devices.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Narrative review. OBJECTIVES There is growing interest in the use of biomedical informatics and data analytics tools in spine surgery. Yet despite the rapid growth in research on these topics, few analytic tools have been implemented in routine spine practice. The purpose of this review is to provide a health information technology (HIT) roadmap to help translate data assets and analytics tools into measurable advances in spine surgical care. METHODS We conducted a narrative review of PubMed and Google Scholar to identify publications discussing data assets, analytical approaches, and implementation strategies relevant to spine surgery practice. RESULTS A variety of data assets are available for spine research, ranging from commonly used datasets, such as administrative billing data, to emerging resources, such as mobile health and biobanks. Both regression and machine learning techniques are valuable for analyzing these assets, and researchers should recognize the particular strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Few studies have focused on the implementation of HIT, and a variety of methods exist to help translate analytic tools into clinically useful interventions. Finally, a number of HIT-related challenges must be recognized and addressed, including stakeholder acceptance, regulatory oversight, and ethical considerations. CONCLUSIONS Biomedical informatics has the potential to support the development of new HIT that can improve spine surgery quality and outcomes. By understanding the development life-cycle that includes identifying an appropriate data asset, selecting an analytic approach, and leveraging an effective implementation strategy, spine researchers can translate this potential into measurable advances in patient care.

Abstract
Objective: The use of gamification can promote health-related behavior. This article is the first attempt to provide a historical overview of the use of games in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty. Materials and Methods: We conducted a scoping review to map and characterize the games used for the person undergoing hip arthroplasty. To perform this review, the respective descriptors were identified using search syntax appropriate to each of the databases: MEDLINE_ (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online), CINAHL_ (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), SPORTDiscus, in the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, SCOPUS, SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), and PEDRo (Physiotherapy Evidence Database). Results: An initial 968 articles were identified, of which 7 articles were included. The domains of the games under analysis essentially focus on aspects of rehabilitation (n = 5), or related (n = 2), and mostly exergames (n = 6). However, the instruments, characteristics, and procedures used to evaluate the games in the included studies have little depth and large variability. Conclusion: Few games exist that support people who have undergone hip arthroplasty. Most of the games under review were exergames to support rehabilitation. Consequently, we recommend developing another type of game with a focus on monitoring, counseling, and/or social support for selfmanagement training in persons undergoing hip arthroplasty.

Abstract
Little concerted effort has been made to understand why individuals undergo total hip replacement (THR) surgery and their rehabilitation goals. Similarly, insight of views and perspective of health care professionals’ (HCPs) regarding surgery and what objective measures help them with decision-making is lacking. This patient and public involvement report aimed to explore both patients’ and HCPs’ perspectives of THR surgery. Twenty patients, 10 pre-THR, 10 post-THR, 9 physiotherapists, and 6 surgeons took part. Results suggest a consensus among patients and HCPs on pain reduction being the main reason for undergoing THR. The inability to carry out simple daily activities such as dog walking and sleep deprivation had a significant effect on patients’ mental and physical well-being. This article is the first to explore the views of THR patients and HCPs on reasons behind THR surgery amalgamated into a single report. As walking is important, wearable activity monitors are suggested as a possible motivator to enhance patient compliance to self-care rehabilitation and increase quality of life. A future research project on the use of such wearable activity monitors in enhancing mobility post-THR is therefore planned.
