Perceived exercise barriers and their associations with regular exercise across three age groups of rural women in Taiwan

A Qualitative Exploration of Facilitators and Barriers to Physical Activity Participation among Chinese Retired Adults in Hong Kong

The purpose of this study was to identify facilitators and barriers associated with physical activity participation among retired Chinese adults in Hong Kong. This study adopts an interview research design in order to generate an in-depth understanding and insights into the participants' thoughts, motivators and experiences of physical activity participation. Independent, semi-structured interviews with 10 retired participants (aged 54-74) were conducted based on an interview protocol with open-ended questions prompting the participants to describe their experiences. Transcribed texts were analysed using thematic analysis, combining both deductive and inductive analysis techniques. Common physical activities reported were walking, stretching exercise and jogging/running. Participants responded that their physical activity level increased since their retirement. We report the interview results according to the themes which emerged from the analysis: (1) physical and mental health, (2) socio-emotional factors, (3) environmental context, (4) family responsibilities. We found that the themes (1), (2) and (3) act either as a facilitator or a barrier for the participants interviewed, while theme (4) family responsibilities act as a barrier. The findings suggested that future physical activity interventions for retired Chinese adults should include more physical activity knowledge, such as the benefits to physical and mental health brought by physical activity and social elements, considering the specific challenges that participants are confronted with (from the family side).

Understanding community-dwelling Chinese older adults' engagement in physical activity: A grounded theory study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Limited information is available on the process of Chinese older adults' initiation, engagement, and maintenance of physical activity (PA), thus limiting the development of effective PA promotion programs. The purpose of the study was to investigate Chinese old adults' perspectives and experiences with PA engagement and to develop a conceptual model illustrating the process of how community-dwelling Chinese older adults engage in PA.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

This study used grounded theory methodology. Nineteen community-dwelling Chinese older adults age over 60 years participated. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with participants. Open, axial, and selective coding, along with constant comparative analysis was performed to analyze the data.

RESULTS

Participants described PA engagement as a complex and dynamic process, consisting of three stages: Getting started, Participating in PA, and Making PA Part of Life. The transition from one stage to the next was driven by an increasing internalized motivation towards PA through Seeing benefits. Many participants described that Staying in Groups was a key strategy for them to keep physically active. Moreover, Restructuring occurred when Chinese older adults encountered trigger situations.

DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS

This study identified the stages of how community-dwelling Chinese older adults engage in to perform and maintain PA. The developed conceptual model can inform future interventions for promoting PA among Chinese older adults.

Self-evaluation by community older adults on the applicability of the healthy beat acupunch exercise program

Objectives To evaluate the applicability of the Healthy Beat Acupunch (HBA) exercise program for older adults at community care centers and to explore their perceived impacts and suggestions for program protocol after six months of HBA exercises. Design & setting This prospective and descriptive study recruited 113 older adults from four community care centers. Intervention The HBA exercises were conducted 3 times a week, 40 min per session, for six months. Main outcome measures The program evaluation focused on four criteria: simplicity, safety, suitability, and helpfulness of the three phases of the HBA program using a 10-point ladder scale. The semi-structured interviews were focused on the participants' exercise experiences, perceived impacts on their health, and suggestions for the HBA program protocol. Results The average scores of the four criteria in each phase of the program ranged between 9.59 and 9.98 points. Participants reported an increase in their limb flexibility (n = 31) and that they were more relaxed (n = 26) and more energetic (n = 26) after engaging in the HBA exercises. Most of the participants suggested that the HBA program should be offered three times a week, 40 min per session, with 30 people in a group, and led by instructors who were professional, hardworking, easygoing, and enthusiastic, regardless of gender and age. Conclusions The HBA program was rated at a high level of simplicity, safety, suitability, and helpfulness by community older adults, which indicated that the program was considered as appropriate and applicable for the older population.
