Multinational companies and high-performance work practices in the Spanish manufacturing industry

Work Ability and Well-Being Management and Its Barriers and Facilitators in Multinational Organizations: A Scoping Review

The aim of this scoping review was to identify effective workplace programs for work ability and well-being management and its barriers and facilitators in multinational organizations. The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched from 1974 through February 2023 to identify quantitative and qualitative studies on the management of work ability and well-being, and related outcomes including presenteeism, absenteeism, productivity loss, and healthy practices, conducted in a multinational organization or company. The titles and abstracts of over 11,000 publications were screened, and 10 studies fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in the review. The management of work ability and well-being in multinational companies requires leadership support and commitment, effective communication, employee health awareness and engagement, comprehensive personalized health risk and condition assessments, and the management of risk factors and occupational and non-occupational health conditions. Financial constraints, high workloads, competing priorities, a lack of effective communication, a lack of worksite managers' motivation, employees' language barriers, high worksite managers' turnover, and a decline in the support of senior managers are considered as barriers, and the presence of existing participatory practices is considered as a facilitator of participation in workplace health and well-being interventions in multinational companies. This review suggests that the management of work ability and well-being in multinational companies should go beyond health promotion and include comprehensive personalized health risk and health condition assessments and management.

Do they really coexist? An empirical analysis of a conjoint implementation of Quality Management System and High Performance Work System on organizational effectiveness

Over the past few decades, Quality Management System (QMS) and High Performance Work System (HPWS) have emerged as key concepts to enhance organizational effectiveness. All over the globe, majority of contemporary manufacturing and services organizations have applied at least one of these development strategies or even both. This study proposes an integrated framework of QMS and HPWS and empirically investigates the relationship between QMS and HPWS practices and their direct and indirect effects on organizational effectiveness using structural equation modelling (SEM). This research makes a number of significant contributions: (1) The black box of the conjoint implementation is opened up for better appreciation of the interplay of QMS and HPWS practices and their influence on organizational effectiveness (2) The key QMS practices recognized as contributing factor of performance have been classified and examined at two distinct levels i.e. QMS Top Level practices and QMS Core practices (3) The mediating and interaction effects of QMS Core practices and HPWS practices on the relationship of QMS-Top Level practices and organizational effectiveness have been thoroughly investigated. The proposed framework is tested through cross-sectional data from 90 Technical Services Organizations (TSO) operating in Pakistan. The research hypotheses are supported by the test results of the SEM. The findings and implications are discussed along with limitations and future research guidelines.

Firm performance: is organizational learning capability the magic wand?

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on human resource practices contribution to retail SMEs performance through its role in developing organizational learning capability (OLC).

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional design was adopted, where data were collected from a sample of 214 managers of retail SMEs, utilizing a survey questionnaire. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The results indicate that incentive reward has the strongest significance on firm performance with a stronger influence on economic performance. Performance appraisal has the greatest effect on system perspective, followed by the impact of employee selection on managerial commitment (MC). MC strongly affects firm performance while openness and experimentation influences satisfaction performance. Additionally, OLC fully mediates the relationship between high-performance human resource management (HRM) practices and firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

It did not include large organizations nor consider other SME contextual variables which may otherwise exert significant impact on OLC.

Practical implications

A profound understanding of distinctive high-performance HRM practices effect on firm performance and the needed employee capabilities that would assist organizations to implement strategies to attain sustainable competitive advantage.

Originality/value

The study advances knowledge on HRM practices among SMEs by proposing that distinctive high-performance HRM practices can leverage OLC to enhance firm performance.

Progressive human resource management and firm performance

Purpose

This study aims to examine the adoption and efficacy level of progressive human resource management (HRM) practices in various organizations operating in India.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data based on 615 respondents from 103 domestic firms and 116 foreign multinational corporations (MNCs) operating in India were gathered and analyzed using statistical techniques like t-test, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results reveal that the adoption of progressive HRM practices in form of self-managed teams, flexibility to work flexible hours, use of online mediums to invite applicants, selection of candidates using assessment center and integrity test, performance based incentives, flexible benefits, facility of e-learning and innovative management development programs is positively related to firm performance in Indian context. Using institutional and cultural perspective, the findings have also demonstrated that their exist differences in adoption of progressive HRM practices between foreign MNCs and domestic firms.

Practical implications

Domestic firms in India are needed to learn some important managerial lessons from the foreign MNCs, especially when their adoption of progressive practices results in more increase in firm performance. These are suggested to implement a broad range of innovative HR practices like MNCs to improve growth potential, instead of focusing on two or three practices.

Originality/value

By exploring the differences between domestic and foreign MNCs, this study has offered some key insights on the extent of adoption and operationalization of progressive HRM in current Indian business environment.
