Performance of subsurface flow constructed wetland mesocosms in enhancing nutrient removal from municipal wastewater in warm tropical environments

Improving performance of pilot-scale ecological bed coupled with microbial electrochemical system for urban tail water treatment

Recycling urban tail water for ecological base flow and landscape use offers a reliable solution for the problem of water resource shortage. But the long-term direct discharge of urban tail water can aggravate the eutrophication of surface water based on the present drainage standard of sewage plant. It is of great significance to develop low-cost and low-energy ecological technologies as transitional region between urban tail water and surface water. In this study, a pilot-scale ecological bed coupled with microbial electrochemical system (EB-MES) was established to treat urban tail water deeply. The system was operated for 96 days from June to September. Average TN removal efficiency in EB-MES under the condition of submerged plant coupled closed-circuit MES could reach 59.0 ± 16.6 %, which was 82.7 % and 38.1 % higher than that of open-circuit EB-MES and MES without plants, respectively. Microbial community structure testing indicated that multiple nitrogen metabolic mechanisms occurred in the system, including nitrification, electrode autotrophic denitrification, anammox, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, and aerobic denitrification, which results in better denitrification efficiency under tail water. Our research provided a novel ecological technology with advantages of high-efficiency, low-energy and low-carbon and verified the feasibility in pilot scale for application in the advanced treatment of urban tail water.

Removal efficacy of fly ash composite filler on tailwater nitrogen and phosphorus and its application in constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been widely used in tailwater treatment. However, it is difficult to achieve considerable removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus in tailwater solely by CWs-an efficient green wetland filler is also important. This study investigated 160 domestic sewage treatment facilities (DSTFs) in rural areas from two urban areas in Jiaxing for TP and NH₃-N and found that TP and NH₃-N concentrations in rural domestic sewage (RDS) in this plain river network are still high. Therefore, we selected a new synthetic filler (FA-SFe) to enhance nitrogen and phosphorus reduction, and we discuss the importance of filler in constructed wetlands. Experiments revealed the adsorption capacity of the new filler: the maximum adsorption amounts of TP and NH₃-N reached 0.47 g m^-2 d^-1 and 0.91 g m^-2 d^-1, respectively. The application potential of FA-SFe was verified in actual wastewater treatment, with the removal rates of ammonia nitrogen and TP reaching 71.3% and 62.7%, respectively. This study provides a promising pathway for nitrogen and phosphorus removal from rural tailwaters.

Efficiency of pilot-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands and microbial community composition operating under tropical conditions

This study assesses the microbial diversity of Thalia geniculate (L.) and Cyperus articulates (L.) in the rhizosphere in planted and unplanted systems with respect to removal efficiency in an experimental horizontal sub-surface constructed wetland pilot plant. The pilot-scale units consisted of six (6) cells of concrete of 0.94 × 0.6 × 0.4 m arranged in a parallel configuration. 29 L d^-1 were distributed to the cells by gravity. The hydraulic retention time was 3 days and influent and effluent measurements of COD and nutrients were monitored with standard methodology. Bacteria samples were isolated from the roots of plants and gravel in selective media and incubated at 37 °C. Isolates were biochemically characterized and genotyped with group-specific primers. Results showed that systems planted with T. geniculata removed greater proportions of COD (82%), NH₄⁺-N (83%) and PO₄²-P (83%) than C. articulatus (85, 74 and 72%, respectively) and unplanted wetland systems (80, 72 and 66%, respectively). Bacterial typing revealed several phyla were most abundant, α-Proteobacteria followed by β-Proteobacteria and there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in CFU between planted and unplanted treatments. The bacterial community varied with respect to plant species or unplanted and demonstrated significant effects to contaminants removal efficiency.
