Recent Advances in Hydrogel-Based Phototherapy for Tumor Treatment

Phototherapeutic agent-based phototherapies activated by light have proven to be safe modalities for the treatment of various malignant tumor indications. The two main modalities of phototherapies include photothermal therapy, which causes localized thermal damage to target lesions, and photodynamic therapy, which causes localized chemical damage by generated reactive oxygen species (ROS). Conventional phototherapies suffer a major shortcoming in their clinical application due to their phototoxicity, which primarily arises from the uncontrolled distribution of phototherapeutic agents in vivo. For successful antitumor phototherapy, it is essential to ensure the generation of heat or ROS specifically occurs at the tumor site. To minimize the reverse side effects of phototherapy while improving its therapeutic performance, extensive research has focused on developing hydrogel-based phototherapy for tumor treatment. The utilization of hydrogels as drug carriers allows for the sustained delivery of phototherapeutic agents to tumor sites, thereby limiting their adverse effects. Herein, we summarize the recent advancements in the design of hydrogels for antitumor phototherapy, offer a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in hydrogel-based phototherapy and its combination with other therapeutic modalities for tumor treatment, and discuss the current clinical status of hydrogel-based antitumor phototherapy.

Chitosan for biomedical applications, promising antidiabetic drug delivery system, and new diabetes mellitus treatment based on stem cell

Since chitosan's excellent pharmacokinetic and chemical properties, it is an attractive and promising carbohydrate biopolymer in biomedical applications. Chitosan's beneficial function in the defense and propagation of pancreatic β cells, reducing hyperglycemia, and avoiding diabetes mellitus associated with impaired lipid metabolism has been demonstrated in several studies. Additionally, chitosan has also been used in various nanocarriers to deliver various antidiabetic drugs to reduce glucose levels. Herein, the first to provide the currently available potential benefits of chitosan in diabetes mellitus treatment focuses on chitosan-based nanocarriers for oral administration of various antidiabetic drugs nasal and subcutaneous passages. Moreover, chitosan is used to activate and deliver stem cells and differentiate them into cells similar to pancreatic beta cells as a new type of treatment for type one diabetes mellitus. The results of this review will be helpful in the development of promising treatments and better control of diabetes mellitus.

Novel nanocomposite of biochar-zerovalent copper for lead adsorption

In this study, a composite of zerovalent copper-biochar was investigated for its ability to remove lead from water. The prepared material was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractomter (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The pH effect on adsorption of lead was investigated within the range of 2-8 and the effect of temperature was studied at 303, 308, 313, and 318 K. The kinetics of lead adsorption on biochar composite was evaluated and the equilibrium time of 12 hr was established. To further evaluate the nature of adsorption, Langmuir model was tested and the adsorption capacities were evaluated for lead adsorption on the surface of copper biochar composite. The activation energy, entropy, and enthalpy values indicated the adsorption phenomenon to be chemisorptive and spontaneous in nature. Comparison of adsorption capacities with the reported adsorbents in the literature concluded zerovalent copper-biochar composite to be an efficient adsorbent for the removal of lead in the experimental conditions under study. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Highly efficient composite of zerovalent copper with biochar was synthesized for lead adsorption. XPS and XRD shows the presence of zerovalent copper in the biochar composite. pH and temperature were the main governing factors in the adsorption process. Adsorption capacity for lead is higher than many of the reported adsorbents.

Recent Developments in Carbon Quantum Dots: Properties, Fabrication Techniques, and Bio-Applications

Carbon dots have gained tremendous interest attributable to their unique features. Two approaches are involved in the fabrication of quantum dots (Top-down and Bottom-up). Most of the synthesis methods are usually multistep, required harsh conditions, and costly carbon sources that may have a toxic effect, therefore green synthesis is more preferable. Herein, the current review presents the green synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) that having a wide range of potential applications in bio-sensing, cellular imaging, and drug delivery. However, some drawbacks and limitations are still unclear. Other biomedical and biotechnological applications are also highlighted.

Outstanding Graphene Quantum Dots from Carbon Source for Biomedical and Corrosion Inhibition Applications: A Review

Graphene quantum dots (GQD) is an efficient nanomaterial composed of one or more layers of graphene with unique properties that combine both graphene and carbon dots (CDs). It can be synthesized using carbon-rich materials as precursors, such as graphite, macromolecules polysaccharides, and fullerene. This contribution emphasizes the utilization of GQD-based materials in the fields of sensing, bioimaging, energy storage, and corrosion inhibitors. Inspired by these numerous applications, various synthetic approaches have been developed to design and fabricate GQD, particularly bottom-up and top-down processes. In this context, the prime goal of this review is to emphasize possible eco-friendly and sustainable methodologies that have been successfully employed in the fabrication of GQDs. Furthermore, the fundamental and experimental aspects associated with GQDs such as possible mechanisms, the impact of size, surface alteration, and doping with other elements, together with their technological and industrial applications have been envisaged. Till now, understanding simple photo luminance (PL) operations in GQDs is very critical as well as there are various methods derived from the optical properties of manufactured GQDs can differ. Lack of determining exact size and morphology is highly required without loss of their optical features. Finally, GQDs are promising candidates in the after-mentioned application fields.

Chitosan based-nanoparticles and nanocapsules: Overview, physicochemical features, applications of a nanofibrous scaffold, and bioprinting

Recent advancements in the synthesis, properties, and applications of chitosan as the second after cellulose available biopolymer in nature were discussed in this review. A general overview of processing and production procedures from A to Z was highlighted. Chitosan exists in three polymorphic forms which differ in degree of crystallinity (α, β, and γ). Thus, the degree of deacetylation, crystallinity, surface area, and molecular mass significantly affect most applications. Otherwise, the synthesis of chitosan nanofibers is suffering from many drawbacks that were recently treated by co-electrospun with other polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and polycaprolactone (PCL). Ultimately, this review focuses on the area of new trend utilization of chitosan nanoparticles as nanospheres and nanocapsules, in cartilage and bone regenerative medicine. Owing to its biocompatibility, bioavailability, biodegradability, and costless synthesis, chitosan is a promising biopolymeric structure for water remediation, drug delivery, antimicrobials, and tissue engineering.

Green microwave synthesis of functionalized chitosan with robust adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) and/or RHB in complex aqueous solutions

Dinitrosalicylic acid-functionalized chitosan, CHN-DNSA, was developed and improved the adsorption property against chromium Cr(VI) and/or Rhodamine B (RHB). Here, the disposal of wastewater bearing Cr(VI) and RHB from a complex system was ascribed to significant differences in physicochemical properties. The constructed CHN-DNSA surface charge is responsible for different interactions enabling simultaneous capture of pollutants. The excellent adsorption potency of Cr(VI) at pH 3.0 was 98.4% within a remarkable 1 h and the adsorption performance was 91.1% for RHB. The ionic strength was affected, reducing the removal % of Cr(VI) to 36.7% whereas 0.1 M NaCl meliorated the removal efficiency from 91.6 to 96.2% for RHB and from 82.3 to 89.1% for a binary system. Also, the exploited elimination process of Cr(VI) and/or RHB obeyed the 2nd model of kinetics and the Freundlich system. Good recovery, superior capacity, and synthetic approach make this protocol promising for wastewater treatment.

Eco-friendly synthesis of functionalized chitosan-based nanoantibiotic system for potential delivery of linezolid as antimicrobial agents

To obtain a healthy human being with beneficial microflora against different pathogenic infections, classical antibiotics with nanosized biomaterials were used to inhibit the growth of bacterium by their potent synergistic effect. Hence, this study planned to load an oxazolidinone antibiotic named linezolid (LD) onto functionalized chitosan (CN) with 3, 5- dinitrosalyslic acid (DA) via microwave synthesis without harsh condition. The exploring synergistic effect of linezolid (LD) with CN/DA controllable nanostructure was compact efflux-mediated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) burden and other selected bactericide Gram-positive ((S. aureus), Gram-negative (E. coli), Fungi (C. albicans), Yeast (A. niger), and E. faecalis. The obtained results showed that LD was incorporated into both the internal and external surface of the aggregated CN/DA nanosystem with an average diameter of 150 nm ± 4 hints of the drug loading. Owing to the nature of functionalized CN, the release efficiency attains 98.4% within 100 min. The designed LD@CN/DA exhibited inhibition zone 54 mm, 59 mm, 69 mm, 54 mm, 57 mm, and 24 mm against the tested microbes respectively rather than individual LD. The major target of the current research is achieved by using LD@CN/DA as a nanoantibiotic system that has exceptional consistently active against multi-resistant pathogens, in between MRSA which resist LD. Also, cell viability was performed even after three days of direct cell culture on the surface of the designed nanoantibiotic. The mechanism of microbial inhibition was correlated and rationalized to different charges and the presence of oxygen species against microbial infections. Our findings provide a deep explanation about nanostructured antibiotics design with enhanced potentially pathogen-specific activity.

Advancement in nanogel formulations provides controlled drug release

Nanogels are currently considered as promising nanosized drug delivery carriers. Nanogels are made of a crosslinked polymeric network which could encapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs due to their tunable nature. The ability of nanogels to control drug release is vastly described in the literature and researchers are consistently improving the control of drug release from nanogel by designing new polymers having specific sensitivity to a chemical or physical stimulus. In this review, we briefly discuss the definition of nanogels, their release profiles, their specific gel-based characteristics and the pathways of dug release from nanogels. We have focused on the stimuli responsive nanogels and their release profile. This compilation opens the window for understanding the influence of chemical composition and design of various nanogel on their release in the presence and absence of corresponding stimuli such as temperature, pH, enzymes and others. The uniqueness of this review is that it highlights the data of release profiles in terms of the different nanogel composition and triggers. It also points the high potential of nanogels in the list of candidates for drug delivery systems, thanks to their properties regarding drug encapsulation and release, combined advantages of nano-size and swelling characteristics of hydrogel.
