Highly Efficient Cd2+ Removal Using Tobermorite with pH Self-Adjustment Ability from Aqueous Solution

Cadmium (Cd), as a type of heavy metal, can increase the incidence of many diseases, even in low concentrations. In this study, tobermorite was hydrothermally synthesized and then applied to adsorb Cd²⁺ from an aqueous solution. The physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized tobermorite were detected, and the results indicated that the well-crystallized tobermorite had a lot of mesopores and a large specific surface area of 140.92 m²/g. It acquired a pH self-adjustment ability via spontaneously releasing Ca²⁺ and OH^- into the aqueous solution. The effects of different factors on Cd²⁺ removal were investigated. For Cd²⁺, the removal efficiency could reach 99.71% and the maximum adsorption capacity was 39.18 mg/g using tobermorite. The adsorption data was best fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. In addition, there was no strict limit on the solution pH in Cd²⁺ adsorption because the tobermorite could adjust the solution pH to an alkaline atmosphere spontaneously. The efficient removal of Cd²⁺ using tobermorite was a result of surface complexation and ion exchange.

Al-Substituted Tobermorites: An Effective Cation Exchanger Synthesized from "End-of-Waste" Materials

The policies to meet the "zero waste" regime and transition to sustainable circular economy can no longer ignore the use of wastes in place of natural resources, and these daunting and vital societal challenges are nowadays being faced by several nations. The main objective of this work was to search waste materials suitable for a quick and environmentally friendly production of a nanoporous geomaterial able to trap toxic metals at the solid/liquid interface. More specifically, the end-of-waste from the thermal inertization of cement-asbestos and glass powder from domestic glass containers have been employed as sources for the hydrothermal synthesis of a tobermorite-rich material (TRM) successfully tested for the selective removal of Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Ni²⁺ from aqueous solutions. The synthesis was carried out in alkaline solution under mild hydrothermal conditions (120 °C) within 24 h. The quantitative phase analyses of the TRM carried out by applying the Rietveld method showed the occurrence of a large amount of well-crystallized 11 Å Al-substituted tobermorites and an amorphous phase and a lower content of aragonite and calcite. Chemical analyses and thermogravimetric measurements coupled with simultaneous evolved gas mass spectrometry highlighted that Al³⁺ for Si⁴⁺ substitutions in the wollastonite-like tetrahedral chains of tobermorites are balanced by the occurrence of Ca²⁺, Na⁺, and K⁺ cations in the interlayer rather than by (OH)^- for O^2- substitutions in the CaO polyhedra. Time-dependent removal tests clearly indicated that metal cations are selectively adsorbed depending on their concentration in solution. Moreover, the kinetic curves showed that the removal of metals from solution is fast and the equilibrium is almost reached in the first 8 h.

Characterisation of products from fungally modified wollastonite and the simulation experiment of Pb2+ fixation

Using cheap raw materials and simple biological modification methods to obtain modified materials to remediate heavy metals has potential application prospects. Here, Aspergillus niger was used to modify wollastonite and further explore its fixation capacity and mechanism. The results showed that the growth and metabolism of A. niger promoted the weathering of wollastonite and the synthesis of whewellite, forming a mineral composite through fungal modification (MCF) with excellent fixation properties of heavy metal Pb²⁺. The maximum adsorption capacity of MCF for Pb²⁺ (434.78 mg/g) is significantly greater than that of original wollastonite (11.86 mg/g) with a desired lower desorption rate. Additionally, its removal rate of Pb²⁺ is higher than 75% under varying acidic conditions (1 ≤ pH ≤ 5.5). The results of XRD, FTIR, BET specific surface area, and SEM-EDS showed that MCF has a special organic-inorganic composite structure, which imparts a larger contact area for ions, and efficient removal of Pb²⁺ through combined physico-chemical adsorption. Batch adsorption results also indicated that the adsorption process by MCF was mainly a spontaneous endothermic reaction in the monolayer. This study provides a new perspective for the bio-modification of wollastonite and its application in the remediation of heavy metal pollution.

Atom-efficient route for converting incineration ashes into heavy metal sorbents

Bottom ashes produced from municipal solid-waste incineration are suitable for sorbent synthesis because of their inherent composition, high alkalinity, metastable mineralogy, and residual heat. This work shows that bottom ashes can be atom-efficiently converted into valuable sorbents without the need for costly and hazardous chemicals. The ashes were hydrothermally treated in rotary autoclaves at autogenic pH conditions to promote the conversion of precursor mineral phases into zeolites and layered silicate hydrates. Two main mineral phases were formed: katoite and sodium aluminum phosphate silicate hydrate. These mineral alterations are accompanied by a tenfold increase in specific surface area and a twofold reduction in average particle size. Performance evaluation of the new sorbents for Cd(2+), Zn(2+), and Pb(2+) adsorption at pH5 indicates sorption capacities of 0.06, 0.08, and 0.22 mmol g(-1), respectively, which are similar to those of natural adsorbents and synthetic materials obtained from more demanding synthesis conditions.

The interaction of zinc oxide-based dental cements with aqueous solutions of potassium fluoride

The ability of zinc oxide-based dental cements (zinc phosphate and zinc polycarboxylate) to take up fluoride from aqueous solution has been studied. Only zinc phosphate cement was found to take up any measurable fluoride after 5 h exposure to the solutions. The zinc oxide filler of the zinc phosphate also failed to take up fluoride from solution. The key interaction for this uptake was thus shown to involve the phosphate groups of the set cement. However, whether this took the form of phosphate/fluoride exchange, or the formation of oxyfluoro-phosphate groups was not clear. Fluoride uptake followed radicaltime kinetics for about 2 h in some cases, but was generally better modelled by the Elovich equation, dq(t)/dt = alpha exp(-betaq(t)). Values for alpha varied from 3.80 to 2.48 x 10(4), and for beta from 7.19 x 10(-3) to 0.1946, though only beta showed any sort of trend, becoming smaller with increasing fluoride concentration. Fluoride was released from the zinc phosphate cements in processes that were diffusion based up to M(t)/M(infinity) of about 0.4. No further release occurred when specimens were placed in fresh volumes of deionised water. Only a fraction of the fluoride taken up was re-released, demonstrating that most of the fluoride taken up becomes irreversibly bound within the cement.
