Abstract
Stroke-related deficits affect stroke survivors' perception of their bodies and possibly impede their progress in rehabilitation and well-being. This study adopted a pre-and post-test design to compare the changes in body perception among younger stroke survivors after participating in an 8-week Expressive Arts-based Intervention (EABI) (n = 32) with the control group (n = 30). Each participant partook in structured drawing interviews at baseline (T0) and 8-week follow-up/post-intervention (T1). The data were analyzed using content analysis. More EABI (n = 27) than control (n = 14) participants reported positive changes in body perception and applied lighter colours or created a more symmetrical drawing at T1. They shared that EABI promoted these positive changes by facilitating the reconnection with one's body and self. While some control participants experienced positive changes in body perception, others tended to apply darker colours or the same colour to show negative or no changes in body perception. More control (n = 8) than EABI (n = 3) participants reported negative thoughts about their bodies and negative influences from other individuals and the environment. The findings suggested that EABI can change stroke survivors' body perception. EABI can be considered one of the interventions that may help foster positive changes in body perception.

Abstract
Purpose This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research literature on psychological interventions for stroke survivors published from 2000 to 2024, focusing on psychological resilience and psychological well-being, utilizing VOSviewer and CiteSpace. Patients and Methods Literature data was sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC). A total of 373 relevant articles published between January 1, 2000, and September 30, 2024, were included. CiteSpace and VOSviewer analyzed the literature from perspectives including authorship, country of origin, institutions, journals, references, and keywords. Results Annual publication output has steadily increased, reaching a peak in 2023 (55 articles). Vranceanu Ana-Maria emerged as the most productive author with eight publications. The United States led in research output (98 articles) and centrality (0.32), with Harvard University being the leading institution (24 articles). "Disability and Rehabilitation" was the most productive journal (12 articles), while "Stroke" was the most co-cited journal (241 times). Recent research trends emphasized meta-analysis (strength=3.6), assessment tool validation (strength=3.49), and acceptance-based interventions (strength=2.89), mainly focusing on psychological resilience cultivation and well-being promotion. Conclusion This bibliometric analysis reveals the increasing scholarly interest in psychological interventions for stroke survivors, particularly in resilience and psychological well-being research. The field has evolved from focusing on disease-related factors to systematic intervention research, with a growing emphasis on methodological standardization and individualized interventions. These findings provide significant theoretical and practical implications for improving psychological health services for stroke survivors. Future research should strengthen high-quality empirical studies, refine assessment tools, and innovate intervention strategies to better address the complex psychological needs of stroke survivors and enhance their resilience and psychological well-being, ultimately improving rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life for stroke survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is one of the leading disabling conditions in the United Kingdom. While an increasing focus on the rehabilitation care for stroke survivors has been noted, practice guidelines, targets and services tend to be tailored for the elderly population rather than young adults. OBJECTIVES This scoping review aimed to map the existing literature on the rehabilitation care experiences and outcomes of young adults post-stroke aged between 18 and 45 years within acute and social care settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A scoping review was conducted to identify existing practice and published academic and evidence-based literature related to the topic. Arksey and O'Malley's framework guided the review and reporting followed the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Electronic databases and grey literature were searched to capture the potentially recent and relevant literature available in English from year 2000-2022. The databases included CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, ASSIA, AMED, PEDro, Cochrane Library and Web of Science. Grey literature was searched from the following sources: Google Scholar, websites of networks, organisations and charities related to stroke. Hand searches were performed on the reference lists of the included articles and grey literature to find relevant references. Data were extracted on young adults' experiences of stroke and rehabilitation care and their outcomes and experiences of a particular stroke rehabilitation programme in acute and social care settings. RESULTS Eighty-five articles were included in this review. In most instances, stroke was reported to negatively impact young adults, although positive consequences were also documented. The focus and the outcomes of stroke rehabilitation were predominantly physical especially in the areas of movement, communication and memory. Young adults experienced a lack of age-adapted stroke rehabilitation in acute and social care settings. CONCLUSION Our results highlight the unmet needs of young adults in their stroke recovery journey. Effective rehabilitation programmes and interventions should be developed to support young adults following stroke and meet their age-specific needs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Understanding navigational barriers and facilitators has the potential to advance equitable stroke care delivery. The aim of this study was to explore, using a qualitative study, the experiences of stroke survivors and their families as they journey through the stroke care system, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 stroke survivors and 12 family members during 2021 and 2022. Participants were recruited through voluntary organisations, social media, and stroke support groups. Data analysis followed a systematic process guided by the framework method with steps including familiarisation, coding, framework development, and charting and interpretation. RESULTS The experiences of navigating stroke care were particularly challenging following discharge from hospital into the community. Barriers to stroke care continuity included insufficient appropriate services and information, unsatisfactory relationships with healthcare professionals and distressed mental health. There were particular navigational challenges for survivors with aphasia. Facilitators to effective navigation included having prior knowledge of the health system, harnessing support for care co-ordination, and being persistent. CONCLUSION Greater support for patient navigation, and person-centred referral pathways, particularly during times of increased pressure on the system, have the potential to improve access to services and wellbeing among stroke survivors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Stroke is often regarded as a disease of the elderly. However, 10-15% of strokes occur in people aged 18 to 50, and rates continue to rise. Young stroke survivors face unique challenges due to their occupational, family and personal commitments, which current stroke rehabilitation services may not fully address. Our qualitative study aimed to identify gaps in patient care and resources for young stroke survivors. We used these findings to develop recommendations to inform clinical care, healthcare system design, and health policy. METHODS Using Interpretive Description, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 stroke survivors aged 18-55 living in British Columbia, Canada, to explore their experiences during stroke recovery and assess current gaps in support and resources. We applied broad-based coding and thematic analysis to the transcripts. RESULTS Key themes included: (1) the need for longitudinal medical follow-up and information provision, (2) the need for psychological/psychiatric care, (3) the need to adapt community supports and resources to young survivors, and (4) the need to centralize and integrate community stroke services and resources. CONCLUSION Young stroke survivors experience unique challenges and lack appropriate services and resources. Many of our findings may be representative of remediable gaps that persist nationally and internationally.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Over 100 million people worldwide live with disabilities resulting from an acquired brain injury (ABI). ABI survivors experience cognitive and physical problems and require support to resume an active life. They can benefit from support from someone who has been through the same issues (i.e. peer mentor). This review investigated the effectiveness of peer mentoring for ABI survivors. METHOD Eleven databases, two trial registers, and PROSPERO were searched for published studies. Two reviewers independently screened all titles, abstracts, and full texts, extracted data, and assessed quality. The PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed to improve transparency in the reporting of the review. RESULTS The search returned 4,094 results; 2,557 records remained after the removal of duplicates and 2,419 were excluded based on titles and abstracts. Of the remaining 138, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. Five were conducted in the United States, three in Canada, three in the UK, and one in New Zealand. Meta-analysis was inappropriate due to the heterogeneity of study designs. Therefore, a narrative synthesis of the data was undertaken. CONCLUSION Although peer mentoring has the potential to positively influence activity and participation among ABI survivors, further research is needed to understand the extent of the benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Co-design methodology seeks to actively engage end-users in developing interventions. It is increasingly used to design stroke interventions; however, limited guidance exists, particularly with/for individuals with stroke who have diverse cognitive, physical and functional abilities. Thus, we describe 1) the extent of existing research that has used co-design for stroke intervention development and 2) how co-design has been used to develop stroke interventions among studies that explicitly used co-design, including the rationale, types of co-designed stroke interventions, participants involved, research methodologies/approaches, methods of incorporating end-users in the research, co-design limitations, challenges and potential strategies reported by researchers. MATERIALS AND METHODS A scoping review informed by Joanna Briggs Institute and Arksey & O'Malley methodology was conducted by searching nine databases on December 21, 2022, to locate English-language literature that used co-design to develop a stroke intervention. Additional data sources were identified through a hand search. Data sources were de-duplicated, and two research team members reviewed their titles, abstracts and full text to ensure they met the inclusion criteria. Data relating to the research objectives were extracted, analyzed, and reported numerically and descriptively. RESULTS Data sources used co-design for stroke intervention development with (n = 89) and without (n = 139) explicitly using the term 'co-design.' Among studies explicitly using co-design, it was commonly used to understand end-user needs and generate new ideas. Many co-designed interventions were technology-based (65%), and 48% were for physical rehabilitation or activity-based. Co-design was commonly conducted with multiple participants (82%; e.g., individuals with stroke, family members/caregivers and clinicians) and used various methods to engage end-users, including focus groups and workshops. Limitations, challenges and potential strategies for recruitment, participant-engagement, contextual and logistical and ethics of co-designed interventions were described. CONCLUSIONS Given the increasing popularity of co-design as a methodology for developing stroke interventions internationally, these findings can inform future co-designed studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Peer-support groups for stroke survivors are often organized and facilitated by health authorities and disability related organizations within rehabilitation programs. However, the benefits of peer-led, peer-support groups have not yet been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to explore participants' experiences in a community-based, peer-led, peer-support group for stroke survivors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed following constructivist grounded theory with 11 participants who attended a peer-led, peer-support group for people with stroke. The data were also complemented with one quantitative rating question regarding their experience attending the group. RESULTS Three themes were identified. Meeting unmet needs after stroke captured how the group was created by stroke survivors to address life in the community post-stroke. Buddies helping buddies highlighted that stroke recovery is a shared process at the group, where members help and encourage each other to contribute what they can. Creating authentic friendships revealed how people experienced social connection and developed relationships in the peer-led, peer-support group. CONCLUSIONS Peer-led, peer-support groups may provide opportunities for stroke survivors to connect with like-minded people in their community to have fun while exploring their abilities.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to explore stroke rehabilitation professionals' understanding and representations of peer support; the benefits they anticipated for patients; and the levers and barriers they perceived to implement the intervention in their practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS This qualitative study comprised four focus groups with 21 rehabilitation professionals and four semi-structured interviews. It was held in a French hospital. Interpretation was guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. RESULTS Although professionals had poor knowledge on peer support, they identified many unmet needs of stroke survivors that peer support could meet such as social, emotional and informational support. Main barriers were the lack of human and financial resources, and of linkage between hospital and community professionals, and the fear that peer support would give false hope to survivors if not delivered properly. They showed ambivalence towards patient engagement, acknowledging its importance, but demonstrating top-down attitudes. They also identified potential avenues for the implementation of peer support for stroke survivors. CONCLUSIONS Our study supports the necessity to involve professionals in the construction of peer-support interventions and to sensitise them to provide patient-centred care. It delivers insights on effective implementation strategies to develop peer support interventions for stroke survivors reintegrating the community.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This scoping review explores the characteristics of a meaningful life appraised by adults living with an acquired neurological impairment. INTRODUCTION Limitations in function, activity or participation following a neurological injury or disease imposes comprehensive changes on the every-day life of the affected person and close relatives. Including patients' perception of a meaningful life is pivotal to facilitate motivation and individualize rehabilitation efforts to address the patients' wishes, hopes, needs, and preferences. Surprisingly, only little research has been devoted to illuminating what a meaningful life is from the impaired person's perspective. Hence, a scoping review of existing knowledge is needed to facilitate person-centered high-quality rehabilitation and research initiatives. INCLUSION CRITERIA All studies, published in English or Scandinavian languages describing a meaningful life as experienced by adult persons with neurological impairment were included. No search date range filter was selected. METHODS This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews according to a published protocol. A three-step search strategy was conducted in the databases PubMed, Cinahl, PsycINFO and Embase. At least two independent researchers conducted inclusions and exclusions, data extraction, and analyses. Covidence software was used to manage the information. FINDINGS We identified 307 studies. Of these, 20 were included and quality assessed. Findings are reported in accordance with the PRISMA- SCR checklist and descriptively presented mapped in three main domains and 10 ten sub-domains. CONCLUSION Current literature conveys no clear definition or perception of what a meaningful life is. However, across the 20 included studies, the following main characteristics were stepped forward as particularly significant for adults living with an acquired neurological impairment in regard to achieving a meaningful life: i) to be part of meaningful relationships and meaningful activities; ii) to become confident with one's perceived identity.

Abstract
PURPOSE Co-creation is identified as a concept with potential to address many challenges in modern healthcare systems. Its application within stroke rehabilitation is yet to be reviewed. The purpose of this paper is to identify when and how co-creation has been used in the literature to develop services and approaches to stroke survivor care and rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS A scoping review was conducted guided by the framework outlined by Arksey and O'Malley. Articles were included if they involved co-creation with stroke survivors and identified co-creation as their methodology to develop post-stroke services. Quality appraisal of included articles was completed. RESULTS The search strategy identified 565 articles. Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria. The results demonstrate that co-creation as a methodology to develop stroke rehabilitation services is a contemporary field, producing both technology and non-technology-based interventions, predominately in the community context. Co-creation application was inconsistent, with a plethora of methodologies used, and terminology to describe co-creation varying between the studies. CONCLUSIONS Co-creation in stroke rehabilitation is currently in an expanding and rudimentary phase. This review identified the variability of its application, with future work needed to establish clarity and consistency in terminology and methodologies utilised to operationalise co-creation in stroke rehabilitation.Implications for rehabilitationCo-creation is a contemporary and evolving service improvement approach in stroke rehabilitation, utilised most commonly in the community context.Inconsistent terminology and diverse methodologies are utilised to enact co-creation in stroke rehabilitation.Opportunities exist to advance co-creation in the stroke rehabilitation space through developing consistency in its application, and further investigation into its use with the stroke survivor population.

Abstract
Stroke survivors encounter significant limitations in daily life activities and face increased risk of health complications such as stroke recurrence. Considering the escalating demand for personalised community rehabilitation services, this qualitative study was conducted to understand the current recovery experiences, needs, and expectations of community-dwelling stroke survivors. Fifty stroke survivors were recruited from two tertiary teaching hospitals and community centres in two provinces in mainland China. Semi-structured interviews were carried out, and participants were asked to describe their experiences of stroke, current lifestyles, exercise habits, and rehabilitation needs and expectations. Resulting data were thematically analysed. The majority of participants were first-time stroke survivors (80%) and lived with their family or caregivers (92%). Four main themes and twelve sub-themes emerged from the data: (1) shifts in social life, (2) shaken sense of self and perceived helplessness, (3) complex rehabilitation needs, and (4) perceptions and patterns of physical activity. Findings suggest that though survivors recognised their need for further rehabilitation, their demands remained unmet due to a combination of personal and external factors such as limited mobility and the absence of supportive companions and accessible facilities. The enhancement and diversification of home rehabilitation strategies are therefore necessary to make community rehabilitation more accessible and equitable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify barriers and facilitators to engagement when returning to, or participating in, leisure activity post-stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). DESIGN Sequential explanatory, mixed methods study. SETTING 21 hospital sites across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. PARTICIPANTS Adults with a clinical diagnosis of first/recurrent stroke or TIA. Patients approaching end of life were excluded. Participants were recruited as in-patients or at first clinic appointment and a baseline questionnaire was completed. A 6-month follow-up questionnaire was sent to participants for self-completion. Open-text questions were asked about barriers and facilitators when returning to, or participating in, leisure activity. Responses were thematically analysed and explored by participant characteristics, including type of leisure activity undertaken. Characteristics also included measures of socioeconomic deprivation, mood, fatigue and disability. RESULTS 2000 participants returned a 6-month follow-up questionnaire (78% stroke, 22% TIA); 1045 participants responded to a question on barriers and 820 on facilitators. Twelve themes were identified and the proportion of responses were reported (%). Barriers: physical difficulties (69%), lower energy levels (17%), loss of independence (11%), psychological difficulties (10%), hidden disabilities (7%), and delay or lack of healthcare provision (3%). Facilitators: family support (35%), healthcare support (27%), well-being and fitness (22%), friendship support (20%), self-management (19%), and returning to normality (9%). 'Physical difficulties' was the most reported barrier across all participant characteristics and activity types. Family support was the most reported facilitator except for those with greater disability, where it was healthcare support and those without fatigue where it was well-being and exercise. CONCLUSIONS Physical difficulties and lack of energy are problematic for stroke and TIA survivors who want to return to or participate in leisure activity. Healthcare support alone cannot overcome all practical and emotional issues related to leisure activity engagement. Family support and improving well-being are important facilitators and future research should explore these mechanisms further.

INTRODUCTION A neurological injury or disease imposes extensive life changes on the affected person and his or her close relatives. Including the patients' perception of a meaningful life is crucial to facilitate adjustment of any rehabilitation initiatives to the patients' wishes, hopes, needs, and preferences. Even so, the descriptions and common traits of a meaningful life from the impaired person's perspective are scarcely covered in the literature. Hence, a scoping review of existing knowledge is needed to facilitate quality rehabilitation and research initiatives. INCLUSION CRITERIA All studies, regardless of their design, are included provided they describe a meaningful life as considered or experienced by persons aged 18 years or more with neurological impairment. METHODS A PICo framework defines the search algorithms used in the databases MEDLINE, Cinahl, PsycINFO and Embase. Using Covidence, the scoping review systematically organizes the identified articles to provide a broad description of the study phenomenon. Furthermore, titles, abstracts, and full-text articles are screened independently by two reviewers to determine if they meet the inclusion criteria. In case of disagreement, a third and fourth reviewer are consulted. The scoping will be reported according to the PRISMA- SCR checklist.

Abstract
Background: Review-based research is needed which can establish the psychosocial outcomes and mechanisms of “storytelling and sharing” interventions for people with stroke. This information will act to inform the value and development of such interventions. Methods: An integrative review was conducted in three stages: (a) a systematic search strategy was undertaken to focus on articles between 2009 until January 2020 to locate articles the considered storytelling and sharing interventions for people diagnosed with stroke; (b) critical appraisal was undertaken to assess study quality; and (c) synthesis within three stages including data reduction, data display and conclusion. Results: Fourteen articles (including 727 participants) were identified that met the eligibility criteria. Five themes were identified that represented the outcome and mechanisms that appeared to be associated with a stroke intervention. These included introducing the concept of hope and learning to be positive, the enhanced ability to cope, the impact of loneliness and social interaction, impact on emotions, depression and related emotions such as fear. Conclusions: Storytelling interventions appear to impact loneliness, introduce positivity and hope and enable coping through knowledge exchange. The main mechanisms which appeared to influence these outcomes were social comparisons and social control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND After discharge, stroke survivors and their informal caregivers need support from their social networks to resume their most valued activities. Rehabilitation professionals could help them establish a strong support system. OBJECTIVE Explore how older stroke survivors and their primary informal caregivers expect to resume their valued activities after discharge, and discover their ideas about involving, informing and educating their family members, friends and important others during inpatient rehabilitation so that, once home, they will have adequate support. METHODS We conducted semi-structured interviews with stroke survivors from three geriatric rehabilitation centres and their primary informal caregivers, used the pictures of daily activities to elicit their perspectives, and applied a descriptive and interpretive design to data analysis. RESULTS Many participants had no concrete idea about how to resume their activities after discharge but nevertheless were optimistic they would. They expected help to be available and saw no need for professionals to involve their network during inpatient rehabilitation. However, once they had insight into the challenges to expect after discharge, they often appreciated the idea of professionals contacting their network. To better understand the challenges after discharge, it was helpful if professionals provided concrete, honest information about the stroke's consequences for daily life. Actually doing daily activities also helped gain better insights. CONCLUSIONS To enhance insight in the need of social support after discharge, we suggest that rehabilitation professionals are honest about what to expect and let stroke survivors explore their valued activities in a realistic context more often.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies of therapy influence on after-aphasia marital relations are lacking. Much needs to be learned about the range of factors associated with couples benefiting from therapy. Understanding these issues is key to facilitating optimal post-aphasia outcomes from the perspective of the patient and his caretaking spouse. This paper reports an evaluation of a group therapy intervention conducted with aphasic people and their life partners. METHODS The intervention comprised of 10 sessions of approximately 90 min duration and included two groups of couples, with fluent and non-fluent aphasic partner. The therapy program consisted of basic communication activities within the group which encouraged sharing of personal experience but mostly relied on psychoeducation, gaining knowledge about after-stroke aphasia. The respondents were interviewed and completed neuropsychological assessment. Quality of marriage was determined using Dyadic Adjustment Scale. Marital adjustment was measured twice, before intervention and after 6 months. Long-time effects of therapy included a significant mean difference in quality of marriage between therapy attendants and controls. Marital relationship decline seems to be worse amongst control subjects, who were not involved in any kind of psychological support. In spite of initial non-distressed relationship they report deterioration of their bond in half a year's time. We also showed changes in dynamics of quality of marriage during this time in all investigated groups. The implications of these findings for counseling services are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Discharge communication is an important aspect of patient care but frequently has shortcomings in emergency departments (EDs). In a paediatric context, youth or parents with young children often leave the ED with minimal opportunity to ask questions or to ensure comprehension of important information. Strategies for improving discharge communication have primarily targeted patients and/or parents, although neither group has been engaged in intervention design or implementation. Furthermore, ED healthcare providers (HCPs), important actors in discharge communication practice, are rarely consulted regarding intervention design decisions. We will generate evidence to enhance discharge communication by engaging youth, parents and HCPs in the codesign of ED discharge communication strategies (EDUCATE) for asthma and minor head injury. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This mixed methods study will take place at two academic paediatric EDs in Canada. The study will occur in two phases: (A) codesign and refinement of the intervention prototypes; and (B) usability testing of the prototypes. During the first phase, two codesign teams (one for each condition) will follow a series of structured design meetings based on the Behavior Change Wheel to develop the EDUCATE interventions. Each codesign team (composed of youth, parents, HCPs and study researchers) will collaborate to identify priority target behaviours and acceptable components to include in the interventions. During the second phase, we will conduct usability testing in two EDs with a group of youth, parents and HCPs to refine the interventions. Two cycles of usability testing will be conducted with intervention refinement occurring at the end of each cycle. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Informed consent will be obtained from all participants. Ethics approval for this study has been obtained from the Research Ethics Board, IWK Health Centre. Results from this study will form the basis of a future effectiveness implementation trial. Key findings will be presented at national and international conferences and published within peer-reviewed journals.

Abstract
Background Aphasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write. Aphasia is a frequent complication of stroke and is a major disability for patients and their families. The provision of services for stroke patients differs across health care providers and regions, and strategies directed at improving these services have benefited from the involvement of patients. However, patients with aphasia are often excluded from these co-design activities due to a diminished capacity to communicate verbally and a lack of health researcher experience in working with patients with aphasia. Objective The primary aim of this paper is to identify approaches appropriate for working with patients with aphasia in an interview situation and, more generally, determine the importance of including people with aphasia in health service improvement research. The secondary aim is to describe the experiences of researchers involved in interviewing patients with aphasia. Methods A total of 5 poststroke patients with aphasia participated in face-to-face interviews in their homes to gain insight into their in-hospital experience following their stroke. Interviews were audio-recorded, and thematic analysis was performed. The experiences of the researchers interviewing these patients were informally recorded postinterview, and themes were derived from these reflections. Results The interview technique utilized in this study was unsuitable to gain rich, qualitative data from patients with aphasia. The experience of researchers performing these interviews suggests that preparation, emotion, and understanding were three of the main factors influencing their ability to gather useful experiential information from patients with aphasia. Patients with aphasia are valuable contributors to qualitative health services research, and researchers need to be flexible and adaptable in their methods of engagement. Conclusions Including patients with aphasia in health service redesign research requires the use of nontraditional interview techniques. Researchers intending to engage patients with aphasia must devise appropriate strategies and methods to maximize the contributions and valuable communications of these participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients' knowledge of heart failure (HF) is integral to improved outcomes. However, the HF literature has not adequately explored the nature of patients' knowledge of HF as part of their lived experience. OBJECTIVES We aimed to characterize the nature of patients' knowledge of HF, in the context of living with the disease. METHODS We conducted a narrative synthesis of qualitative studies that addressed patients' knowledge of HF. Studies were systematically searched and retrieved from MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES databases. Findings were synthesized using an iterative coding process carried out by multiple analysts and reported following Enhancing Transparency in the Reporting of Qualitative Health Research (ENTREQ) criteria. RESULTS Analysis of 73 eligible articles produced five themes: the content that comprises HF knowledge; development of HF knowledge over time; application of HF knowledge for decision making; communication of information between clinicians and patients; and patients' experience of knowledge. CONCLUSION The nature of patients' knowledge of HF is both explicit and implicit, dynamic, and personal. This multidimensional model of knowledge-in-context calls for equally multidimensional research and intervention design.
