Abstract
Communication in nursing is essential to the quality of care and patients' satisfaction, and personal variables such as empathy and emotional intelligence (EI) can improve it; however, no studies have to date analyzed these competencies and their relations among nursing students compared with nurses. The aims of this study are, therefore, to analyze the differences between nursing students and nurses in the means for empathy, EI and attitudes towards communication in order to assess the impact of empathy and EI on nurses' and nursing students' attitudes towards communication, and their influence on the behavioral dimension of attitude. A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on a convenience sample of 961 nursing students and 460 nurses from the Valencian Community, Spain. T-test and hierarchical regression models (HRM) were used. The data was collected in the selected universities in the 2018/2019 academic year. The results showed high levels in all the variables analyzed (i.e., empathy, EI, and attitudes towards communication) in both samples. The HRM results suggested that empathy was a better predictor than EI of the attitudes towards patient communication among both the nursing students and nurses. In the behavioral dimension of the attitude, the cognitive and affective dimensions had greater weight than the emotional component (i.e., empathy and EI). Developing empathy and the cognitive dimension of the attitude in nursing students and nurses could, therefore, help improve EI and attitudes towards communication. These findings are important for developing intervention programs adjusted to real needs.

Abstract
AIM The inability of nurses to express their own emotions, understand others' emotions and show empathy could result in communication gaps that could affect patient care outcomes. This study investigates the factors associated with the levels of alexithymia, empathy and communication skills among nursing students. DESIGN A survey was conducted among 365 nursing students, and data were collected using an online questionnaire. METHODS Data analyses were done using SPSS software version 22. RESULTS There was a significant positive association between age and empathy and a negative association between the number of times a nurse took the entrance exam. The level of education and interest in nursing correlate with communication skills. All the predictor variables of alexithymia in this current study were not significant. Emphasis should be placed on improving nursing students' empathy and communication skills. Student nurses should be taught how to recognize and express their emotions. To assess their mental health, they must be screened regularly.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study was conducted to determine the effect of the communication skills psychoeducation program on the self-esteem and communication skills of the care staff working in a rehabilitation center. MATERIAL AND METHOD The sample was 61 in the study, which was conducted in a quasi-experimental way with a single group pretest, posttest and follow-up pattern. FINDING At the end of the psychoeducation program, it was determined that the psychoeducation has a positive effect on the self-esteem and communication skills of the care staffs. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Implementation of this practice, which can be applied to all care staffs in the clinics or rehabilitation centers, with repeated measurements such as 6 or 12-month periods may contribute to the literature.

Abstract
Background. Operating rooms are among the most complex clinical environments in hospitals where teamwork and professional communication play a very important part. Professional commitment is an influential factor in the personnel’s professional communication and can affect the outcomes of healthcare services. Objective. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between professional communication and professional commitment in the operating room nurses in teaching hospitals. Study Design. The present study used a descriptive-correlational design. Participants were selected via census sampling from hospitals in Shiraz over a period of three months. The participants were 350 operating room nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using professional communication and a professional commitment questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS
v. 22. Findings. The operating room nurses’ mean scores for professional communication (136.81 ± 13.77) and professional commitment (71.42 ± 11.62) were found to be high. The results of the Pearson correlation coefficient test showed that there was a statistically significant linear relationship between professional communication and professional commitment (
, r = 0.235). The results also showed that there was a significant relationship between professional commitment on the one hand and gender (
), marital status (
), and interest in work (
) on the other hand. There was also a significant relationship between professional communication and interest in work (
). Conclusion. Given the significance of professional communication and professional commitment in the operating rooms, it is recommended that healthcare administrators and policymakers take steps to improve these areas. It is suggested that measures should be taken to increase the personnel’s awareness of the principles of professional communication and the significance of professional commitment through regular workshops.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to establish the Turkish validity and reliability of the Kiersma-Chen empathy scale (KCES) and determine its psychometric properties. DESIGN AND METHODS This methodological study was carried out with 227 nursing students between April and May 2019. FINDINGS The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the total scale is 0.854, the test-retest coefficient was high for the total scale (r = 0.989), and total-item correlations ranged between 0.398 and 0.712. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The KCES-TR is a valid and reliable scale to measure empathy in nursing students.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the relationship between nursing students' professional attitudes and caring behaviors. DESIGN AND METHODS The research is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study. The study was conducted with 202 nursing students. The participation rate was 95%. FINDINGS The total Instrument of Professional Attitude for Student Nurses mean score was 106.708 ± 20.24 and the Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 mean score of the nursing students was 5.23 ± 0.88. A positive weak correlation was found between total Instrument of Professional Attitude for Student Nurses scores and sub-dimension scores, and Caring Behaviors Inventory-24 total scores of nursing students (p < .05). PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The present study has demonstrated that the professional attitudes of students positively affect caring behaviors.

Abstract
This study was planned to determine the relationship between the attitudes of nursing students towards death and dying patients and their empathic tendencies. This study was conducted with a descriptive and correlational design. The research was completed with 176 students. Positive significant relationship found between between the FATCOD and ETS scores. It was observed that a 1-point increase in the Empathic Tendency Scale score caused an increase of 0.502 points in the FATCOD score. İt is recommended providing training sessions with simulation applications for nursing students to prepare them for end-of-life care experiences.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of affective learning on alexithymia, empathy, and attitude toward disabled persons in nursing students. DESIGN AND METHODS This prospective, randomized, controlled trial study was implemented among 70 nursing students. Based on transformative learning theory, the affective learning method was applied to the intervention group. Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), Empathic Tendency Scale (ETS), and Attitudes Toward Disabled Person Scale (ATDPS) were administered to both groups. RESULTS The intervention group showed a statistically and significantly lower score at TAS and higher score at ATDPS compared to the control group, whereas no statistically significant difference was found in ETS score. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Affective learning methods could be implemented in the nursing course for improving students' attitude toward disabled persons, and reducing alexithymia.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to determine the compassionate communication levels of nursing students and the predictive roles of empathic skills and nursing communication courses. DESIGN AND METHODS This descriptive study was conducted with 430 nursing students and data were analyzed using a descriptive information form, Compassionate Communication Scale (CCS), and Empathic Skill Scale (ESS). FINDINGS A positive relationship was found between the students' ESS and CCS scores (r = .23 p = 0.001). Empathic skills (β = 0.43, p = 0.001), predicted compassionate communication (β = 0.23, p = 0.001), compassionate conversation (β = 0.43, p = 0.001), and compassionate touch (β = 0.18, p = 0.001). PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Skills of compassion and empathy positively affect each other; therefore, it is important to adopt strategies that strengthen the empathic skills of nursing students during academic education and to include empathy and compassion in the curriculum.

Abstract
This study aims to describe and compare the effects of standardised patient simulation and role-play in the acquisition and retention of interprofessional communication in elderly care competence amongst nursing students. In this controlled clustered randomised trial, 121 nursing students attended a workshop on interprofessional communication in elderly care using role-play or standardised patient simulation. The study was conducted between September 2017 and February 2018. Participants’ knowledge, self-efficacy and communication skills were assessed using a simulated scenario at pre-test, post-test and 6-week follow-up points. Between-subject and within-subject differences were measured using counts and proportions of participants who achieved competence. Regardless of the strategy applied, a significant improvement in knowledge, skills, self-efficacy and overall interprofessional communication competence was found between pre-test and post-test. Moreover, there were significant differences between pre-test and follow-up for all the studied variables, but no differences were found between post-test and follow-up. Lastly, when comparing the success rates of both strategies, no significant differences were observed (p > 0.05). In conclusion, standardised patient simulation and role-play have been shown to promote an improvement on knowledge, self-efficacy and interprofessional communication skills in nursing students, although it is not possible to state which strategy is the most adequate for teaching this competency.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the beliefs and empathic tendency levels of nursing students toward mental illnesses and to examine the relationship between them. DESIGN AND METHODS The cross-sectional study was conducted with 335 nursing students. The data collection tools were the Personal Information Form, Beliefs Toward Mental Illnesses Scale, and the Empathic Tendency Scale. FINDINGS Nursing students have positive beliefs about mental illness. It was found that female students, and students who received information about mental health had higher levels of empathic tendency. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS It was found that the level of empathic tendency does not affect attitudes toward mental illnesses. In nursing education curriculum, it is recommended to plan psychosocial practices to improve their attitudes toward mental illnesses and to reduce stigmatization.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aims to determine the relationship between nurses' empathic tendencies, empathic skills, and individualized care perceptions. DESIGN AND METHODS This study employed a descriptive and correlational design. Data were collected from nurses in eight training and research hospitals in Turkey. The study sample consisted of 472 nurses who were both volunteered to participate and randomly selected. FINDINGS A definite high-level relation was determined between nurses' empathic tendencies and individualized care perceptions, but no relation was determined between nurses' empathic skills and individualized care perceptions. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS This study can underline practices accounting for empathy and individualized care in nursing research and training programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Empathy is a central competence for nursing students in delivering compassionate care. Empathy training might improve the communication skills in children's nursing students. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of the Knowledge, Simulation, and Sharing training programme on empathy skills among children's nursing students. DESIGN A controlled pre-post intervention study with a quasi-experimental design. SETTING Tertiary children's hospital in China. PARTICIPANTS Children's nursing students (n = 250) in clinical internship. METHODS A Knowledge, Simulation, and Sharing (KSS) module related to empathy learning was developed and tested during a 10-month period in 2017. Nursing students were divided into an experimental group (n = 125) and control group (n = 125). Both groups received the standard internship programme. The experimental group received the KSS training. Outcome measures were: Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professions Student, Clinical Communication Competence Scale and Professional Identity Scale. RESULTS At the end of the internship the experimental groups had significantly higher empathy scores than the control group (114.57 versus 110.36; p = .016). The communication skills improved significantly in the experimental group after the training; experimental group mean 90.22 versus control group mean 87.41 (p = .042). The professional identity scores were significantly higher in the experimental group at the end of the internship compared to the control group (mean 116.43 versus 107.68; p < .001). Subgroup analysis revealed only significant differences on professional identity outcomes between experimental and control groups on diploma level (mean 115.78 versus 107.72; p < .001); and bachelor's level (mean 120.05 versus 108.00; p < .016). CONCLUSION The KSS training can enhance empathy and communication skills and the professional identity in children's nursing students. Further long-term effectiveness of the training needs to be tested, ideally with reported outcomes measures of children and parents.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate the Empathic Orientation in Nursing students of the Universidad Metropolitana of Barranquilla (Colombia). Method: a descriptive, exploratory and transversal study in which the Jefferson Medical Empathy Scale in an anonymous and confidential manner was applied to 489 students from the first to fourth undergraduate year of the Nursing Program of the Universidad Metropolitana (Barranquilla, Colombia); the corresponding ethical and methodological rigor was kept. Results: the ANOVA results were not significant in the Academic Year factor and in the interaction (p=0.261), but significant by Gender. It was observed that behavior was different in both genders. The masculine gender tends to descend between the first and third undergraduate year and female gender also descends between first and second undergraduate year to later reach the average levels of empathy of the male gender. Conclusion: the results obtained show that the means of the variable studied do not show a great difference between the different undergraduate courses, nevertheless, a slight increase in the fourth undergraduate year is observed. There were significant differences between genders, the scores observed in men students were higher than those obtained from women students.

Abstract
Background: Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize and manage one’s own and others’ emotions, empathy is the ability to understand how others feel, whereas alexithymia represents the difficulty in feeling and verbally expressing emotions. Emotional competences are important requirements for positive outcomes in nursing profession. The aim of the study: To analyze EI, empathy and alexithymia in nursing students. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in a sample of 237 students (53 males, 184 females), attending both the 1st and 3rd year of the University Nursing Course in Modena. We administered three Italian validated scales: Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT), Jefferson Scale of Empathy - Health Professions Student (JSE-HPS), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Data were statistically analyzed. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the 1st and 3rd year students at SSEIT (t=-0.6, p=0.52), JSE-HPS (t=-3.2, p=0.0016) and TAS-20 scores (t=-3.54, p=0.0005). Among 3rd year students, females obtained significantly different scores from those of males at SSEIT (t=2.8, p=0.006). All three scales reported a Cronbach’s alpha >0.80. SSEIT correlated positively with JSE-HPS (Spearman’s rho=0.15, p=0.02) and negatively with TAS-20 (Spearman’s rho=-0.18, p=0.006). Conclusions: Our study highlighted a good level of emotional skills among students at the beginning of nursing training, further increased by the last year of the course, suggesting that emotional competences can be learned, and confirmed that empathy, but not alexithymia, is a dimension of EI. Abstract
Many nurses report a lack of confidence providing care for patients facing a life-threatening illness. Palliative care leaders have devised primary palliative nursing care competencies (CARES [Competencies And Recommendations for Educating undergraduate nursing Students]) that all students should achieve. In this study, nursing students participated in an innovative palliative care immersion experience, the Comfort Shawl Project. We performed a reliable content analysis of their narrative reflections. The goal was to evaluate whether reflections on their interactions with patients/families were consistent with CARES competencies. Nine female students wrote reflections after gifting each of the 234 comfort shawls to patients. Four CARES-related categories were analyzed: Individual Values and Diversity, Compassionate Communication, Fostering Quality of Life, and Self-Insight and Emotion. Reflections were highly representative (41%) of recognizing Individual Values and Diversity, representing sensitivity for patients' unique differences in values, an integral component of palliative care. The Comfort Shawl Project shows promise as an experiential immersion for introducing nursing students to CARES competencies.
