Fine Particulate Organic Material at Meadview During the Project MOHAVE Summer Intensive Study

Migration and distribution characteristics of typical organic pollutants in condensable particulate matter of coal-fired flue gas and by-products of wet flue gas desulfurization system

The wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) system of coal-fired power plants shows a good removal effect on condensable particulate matter (CPM), reducing the dust removal pressure for the downstream flue gas purification devices. In this work, the removal effect of a WFGD system on CPM and its organic pollutants from a coal-fired power plant was studied. By analyzing the organic components of the by-products emitted from the desulfurization tower, the migration characteristics of organic pollutants in gas, liquid, and solid phases, as well as the impact of desulfurization towers on organic pollutants in CPM, were discussed. Results show that more CPM in the flue gas was generated by coal-fired units at ultra-low load, and the WFGD system had a removal efficiency nearly 8% higher than that at full load. The WFGD system had significant removal effect on two typical esters, especially phthalate esters (PAEs), with the highest removal efficiency of 49.56%. In addition, the WFGD system was better at removing these two esters when the unit was operating at full load. However, it had a negative effect on n-alkanes, which increased the concentration of n-alkanes by 8.91 to 19.72%. Furthermore, it is concluded that the concentration distribution of the same type of organic pollutants in desulfurization wastewater was similar to that in desulfurization slurry, but quite different from that in coal-fired flue gas. The exchange of three organic pollutants between flue gas and desulfurization slurry was not significant, while the concentration distribution of organic matters in gypsum was affected by coal-fired flue gas.

Evaluation of an annular denuder system for carbonaceous aerosol sampling of diesel engine emissions

Sampling of particle-phase organic carbon (OC) from diesel engines is complicated by adsorption and evaporation of semivolatile organic carbon (SVOC), defined as positive and negative artifacts, respectively. In order to explore these artifacts, an integrated organic gas and particle sampler (IOGAPS) was applied, in which an XAD-coated multichannel annular denuder was placed upstream to remove the gas-phase SVOC and two downstream sorbent-impregnated filters (SIFs) were employed to capture the evaporated SVOC. Positive artifacts can be reduced by using a denuder but particle loss also occurs. This paper investigates the IOGAPS with respect to particle loss, denuder efficiency, and particle-phase OC artifacts by comparing OC, elemental carbon (EC), SVOC, and selected organic species, as well as particle size distributions. Compared to the filterpack methods typically used, the IOGAPS approach results in estimation of both positive and negative artifacts, especially the negative artifact. The positive and negative artifacts were 190 microg/m3 and 67 microg/m3, representing 122% and 43% of the total particle OC measured by the IOGAPS, respectively. However particle loss and denuder break-through were also found to exist. Monitoring particle mass loss by particle number or EC concentration yielded similar results ranging from 10% to 24% depending upon flow rate. Using the measurements of selected particle-phase organic species to infer particle loss resulted in larger estimates, on the order of 32%. The denuder collection efficiencyfor SVOCs at 74 L/min was found to be less than 100%, with an average of 84%. In addition to these uncertainties the IOGAPS method requires a considerable amount of extra effort to apply. These disadvantages must be weighed against the benefits of being able to estimate positive artifacts and correct, with some uncertainty, for the negative artifacts when selecting a method for sampling diesel emissions.

IMPLICATIONS

Measurements of diesel emissions are necessary to understand their adverse impacts. Much of the emissions is organic carbon covering a range ofvolatilities, complicating determination of the particle fraction because of sampling artifacts. In this paper an approach to quantify artifacts is evaluated for a diesel engine. This showed that 63% of the particle organic carbon typically measured could be the positive artifact while the negative artifact is about one-third of this value. However, this approach adds time and expense and leads to other uncertainties, implying that effort is needed to develop methods to accurately measure diesel emissions.

Measurement of semivolatile carbonaceous aerosols and its implications: a review

Measurement of carbonaceous aerosols is complicated by positive and negative artifacts. An organic denuder with high efficiency for removing gaseous organics is an effective approach to eliminate the positive artifact, and it is a precondition for the accurate determination of SVOC by an adsorbent backup filter. Evaluations of different configurations of the organic denuder, and SVOC determined by different denuder-based samplers, both integrated and semi-continuous, are reviewed. A new equation for determination of the denuder efficiency is estimated, considering the efficiency of removing both the gaseous organics that could be adsorbed by the quartz and the gaseous passing through the quartz that could be subsequently adsorbed by the backup adsorbent filter. The origin of OC on the backup quartz filter, behind either quartz or Teflon filter, is quantitatively evaluated by the denuder-based method based on the data published. The backup-OC is shown to be dominated by either gaseous organics passing through the front filter or the evaporated particulate organic carbon depending on the sampling environment.

Acute airway effects of ozone-initiated d-limonene chemistry: importance of gaseous products

There are concerns about ozone-initiated chemistry, because the formation of gaseous oxidation products and ultrafine particles may increase complaints, morbidity and mortality. Here we address the question whether the gaseous products or the ultrafine particles from the ozone-initiated chemistry of limonene, a common and abundant indoor pollutant, cause acute airway effects. The effects on the airways by d-limonene, a ca. 16s old ozone/d-limonene mixture, and clean air were evaluated by a mice bioassay, from which sensory irritation of the upper airways, airflow limitation, and pulmonary irritation can be obtained. A denuder was inserted to separate the ultrafine particles from the gaseous products prior to the exposure chamber. Reduction of mean respiratory frequency (>30%) and 230% increase of time of brake were observed without denuder, during 30min exposure, to the ozonolyzed d-limonene mixture, which are indicative of prominent sensory effects. The initial concentrations (ppm) were 40 d-limonene and 4 ozone. The exposure concentrations (ppm) were about 35 d-limonene and 0.05 ozone. Formaldehyde and residual d-limonene, the salient sensory irritants, accounted for up to three-fourth of the sensory irritation. The upper airway effects reversed to baseline upon cessation of exposure. An effect on the conducting airways was also significant, which did not reverse completely upon cessation. Airway effects were absent with the denuder inserted, which did not alter the size distribution of ultrafine particles ( approximately 10mg/m(3)), significantly. The result was statistically indistinguishable from clean dry air. It is concluded that ultrafine particles that are generated from ozone-initiated d-limonene chemistry and denuded are not causative of sensory effects in the airways.

Light extinction by fine atmospheric particles in the White Mountains region of New Hampshire and its relationship to air mass transport

Chemical, optical, and physical measurements of fine aerosols (aerodynamic diameter < or = 2.5 microm) have been performed at a mountaintop location adjacent to the White Mountain National Forest in northern NH, USA. A 1-month long sampling campaign was conducted at Cranmore Mountain during spring 2000. We report on the apportionment of light extinction by fine aerosols into its major chemical components, and relationships between variations in aerosol parameters and changes in air mass origin. Filter-based, 24-h integrated samples were collected and analyzed for major inorganic ions, as well as organic (OC), elemental (EC), and total carbon. Light scattering and light absorption coefficients were measured at 5-min intervals using an integrating nephelometer and a light absorption photometer. Fine particle number density was measured with a condensation particle counter. Air mass origins and transport patterns were investigated through the use of 3-day backward trajectories and a synoptic climate classification system. Two distinct transport regimes were observed: (1) flow from the north/northeast (N/NE) occurred during 9 out of 18 sample-days; and (2) flow from the west/southwest (W/SW) occurred 8 out of 18 sample-days. All measured and derived aerosol and meteorological parameters were separated into two categories based on these different flow scenarios. During W/SW flow, higher values of aerosol chemical concentration, absorption and scattering coefficients, number density, and haziness were observed compared to N/NE flow. The highest level of haziness was associated with the climate classification Frontal Atlantic Return, which brought polluted air into the region from the mid-Atlantic corridor. Fine particle mass scattering efficiencies of (NH4)2SO4 and OC were 5.35 +/- 0.42 m2 g(-1) and 1.56 +/- 0.40 m2 g(-1), respectively, when transport was out of the N/NE. When transport was from the W/SW the values were 4.94 +/- 0.68 m2 g(-1) for (NH4)2SO4 and 2.18 +/- 0.91 m2 g(-1) for OC. EC mass absorption efficiency when transport was from the N/NE was 9.66 +/- 1.06 m2 g(-1) and 10.80 +/- 1.76 m2 g(-1) when transport was from the W/SW. Results from this work can be used to predict visual air quality in the White Mountain National Forest based on a forecasted synoptic climate classification and its associated visibility.

Semi-volatile species in PM2.5: comparison of integrated and continuous samplers for PM2.5 research or monitoring

Fine particles in urban atmospheres contain substantial quantities of semi-volatile material [e.g., NH4NO3 and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)] that are lost from particles during collection on a filter. Several diffusion denuder samplers have been developed for the determination of both NO3- and organic semi-volatile fine particulate components. The combination of technology used in the BOSS diffusion denuder sampler and the Harvard particle concentrator has resulted in the Particle Concentrator-Brigham Young University Organic Sampling System (PC-BOSS) for the 24-hr (or less) integrated collection of PM2.5, including NH4NO3 and semi-volatile organic material. Modification of the BOSS sampler allows for the weekly determination of these same species. Combination of BOSS denuder and tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) monitor technology has resulted in the real-time ambient mass sampler (RAMS) for the continuous measurement of PM2.5, including the semi-volatile components. Comparison of the results obtained with the BOSS and with each of the newly developed modifications of the BOSS indicates that the modified versions can be used for the continuous, daily, or weekly monitoring of PM2.5, including semi-volatile species, as appropriate to the design of each sampler.
