High Betrayal Adolescent Sexual Abuse and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: The Role of Depersonalization in Emerging Adults

Prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Their Associations with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Among Chinese Adolescents with Depression

The presence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in adolescents diagnosed with depression has been associated with an extensive range of mental health issues, including non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, there has been a dearth of research into the prevalence of ACEs and their associations with NSSI among depressed adolescent populations in China. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of different types of ACEs and their associations with NSSI in depressed Chinese adolescents. Utilizing Chi-squared tests, latent class analysis (LCA), and multinomial logistic regression, the prevalence of different types of ACEs and their associations with NSSI were determined in a sample of 562 adolescents with depression. Among depressed adolescents. 92.9% of depressed adolescents reported ACEs, and the prevalence of emotional neglect, physical abuse, caregiver treated violently, and bullying was relatively high. ACEs, including sexual abuse (OR = 5.645), physical abuse (OR = 3.603), emotional neglect (OR = 3.096), emotional abuse (OR = 2.701), caregiver divorce/family separation (OR = 2.5), caregiver treated violently (OR = 2.221), and caregiver substance abuser (OR = 2.117), were associated with increased odds of exposure among depressed adolescents with NSSI. The high ACEs class (19%), the moderate ACEs class (40%), and the low ACEs class (41%) were identified as latent classes. NSSI was more prevalent in the high/moderate ACEs class compared to the low ACEs class, particularly in the high ACEs class. The situation of the prevalence of ACEs among adolescents with depression was unsatisfactory, and certain types of ACEs were associated with NSSI. Eliminating potential risk factors for NSSI requires the early prevention and targeted intervention of ACEs. Moreover, additional large-scale longitudinal studies are necessary to assess the different development trajectories associated with ACEs, such as the relationships between the different development periods of ACEs and NSSI, and to ensure the adoption of evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies.

Unwanted Pursuit Behavior Victimization as a Predictor of Engagement in Nonsuicidal Self-Injury

While prior research has studied associations between child abuse and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), there is limited research assessing unwanted pursuit behavior (UPB) victimization and NSSI. In addition, few studies have assessed the self-reported functions of NSSI among survivors of violence. Among a sample of 18-25-year-old young adults (N = 333), both UPB victimization and child abuse were significantly associated with NSSI frequency. In regression models, UPB victimization was associated with increased use of affect regulation, antidissociation/feeling-generation, self-punishment, and antisuicide functions, while child abuse was associated only with antidissociation/feeling-generation and self-punishment. Affect regulation mediated the association between UPB victimization and NSSI frequency, but not the association between child victimization and NSSI frequency. Implications for research and clinical practice will be discussed.

Longitudinal Relations Between Childhood Maltreatment, Emotion Regulation Difficulties, and Suicidal Ideation and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: An 18-Month Investigation of Psychiatrically Hospitalized Adolescents

Within the Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology, extant research shows that exposure to threat-including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse-is linked to psychopathology among adolescents; problems with emotion regulation may, at least in part, explain this association. Both theoretical and empirical work also suggests that emotion regulation difficulties-particularly access to emotion regulation strategies-may mediate the relation between threat and self-injurious thoughts and behavior, though no studies to date have explicitly tested this model. The current study tested relations between threat, limited access to emotion regulation strategies, and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors among high-risk youth across an 18-month follow-up. The sample consisted of 180 adolescents (Mage = 14.89; SD = 1.35; ages 12-17; 71.7% female; 78.9% White; 55.0% heterosexual) recruited from an inpatient psychiatric unit. Threat was assessed at baseline using the abuse subscales from Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Access to emotion regulation strategies was assessed using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale at baseline, 6-, and 12-months. Presence (versus absence) of non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal ideation severity were assessed at baseline, 12-, and 18-months using the Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-JR, respectively. After accounting for baseline levels of the mediator, outcome, and depressive symptoms, structural equation models supported the role of 12-month access to emotion regulation strategies as a mediator between baseline threat and 18-month suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury. Treatment aimed at bolstering access to emotion regulation strategies may help reduce suicide risk among youth who have experienced childhood abuse.

It Hurts When You're Close: High Betrayal Sexual Trauma, Dissociation, and Suicidal Ideation in Young Adults

Sexual trauma (e.g., rape), is associated with dissociation and suicidal ideation (SI). Sexual trauma is additionally harmful when perpetrated by a person(s) who is close or trusted (known as high betrayal). With young adulthood as a high-risk period for mental instability, the purpose of the current study is to examine the roles of high betrayal sexual trauma and dissociation in SI among young adults. Participants (N = 192) were college students who completed the 30-minute online survey. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) found that high betrayal sexual trauma was associated with dissociation and SI. Moreover, there was an indirect effect of high betrayal sexual trauma on SI through dissociation. Empirical implications include examining these associations longitudinally, with a focus on the impact of revictimization over time.

Gendered Sexual Violence: Betrayal Trauma, Dissociation, and PTSD in Diverse College Students

Young adults' transition into college includes risk for onset of mental health problems and sexual violence, particularly for women. Compared to men and boys, women and girls across the lifespan are more likely to be sexually abused, with the perpetrators often being someone close to them. High betrayal trauma is linked to varied mental health outcomes. Despite literature depth, many samples are not ethnically diverse, which results in uncertainty about the generalizability of these findings outside of majority White American populations. The purpose of the current study is to assess gender and high betrayal in sexual violence and mental health outcomes among ethnically diverse college students in the U.S. Participants (N = 368) were ethnically diverse college students attending a public university in the Pacific Northwest, who completed online measures assessing sexual violence and mental health outcomes. When controlling for medium betrayal sexual trauma (perpetrator: unclose other), the associations between high betrayal sexual trauma and dissociation and anxiety, respectively, were moderated by the female gender. The findings point to the utility of relational cultural therapy as a feminist framework that can identify sexism as a contributing factor to young women's increased risk for sexual violence and associated mental health problems.

Isn't It All About Victimization? (Intra)cultural Pressure and Cutural Betrayal Trauma in Ethnic Minority College Women

Cultural betrayal trauma theory proposes that intraracial trauma in ethnic minority populations includes a cultural betrayal that contributes to outcomes, such as symptoms of PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder; posttraumatic stress symptoms [PTSS]), dissociation, and (intra)cultural pressure. Participants (n = 179) were ethnic minority female college students, who completed online questionnaires. The results revealed that when controlling for age, ethnicity, and interracial trauma, intraracial trauma and (intra)cultural pressure affected PTSS and dissociation. There were also indirect effects of cultural betrayal trauma on outcomes through (intra)cultural pressure. The current study can contribute to clinical interventions that address trauma-related mental health in ethnic minority college women.
