NMR Study of Molecular Order in a Liquid Crystal with Smectic Ad and Reentrant Nematic Mesophases. A Comparative Study with Models for the SAd Phase

MAS NMR Investigation of Molecular Order in an Ionic Liquid Crystal

The structure and molecular order in the thermotropic ionic liquid crystal (ILC), [choline][geranate(H)octanoate], an analogue of Choline And GEranate (CAGE), which has potential for use as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and transdermal and oral delivery agent, were investigated by magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), polarizing optical microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and mass spectrometry. Mass spectrometry and the ¹H NMR chemical shift reveal that CAGE-oct is a dynamic system, with metathesis (the exchange of interacting ions) and hydrogen exchange occurring between hydrogen-bonded/ionic complexes such as [(choline)(geranate)(H)(octanoate)], [(choline)(octanoate)₂(H)], and [(choline)(geranate)₂(H)]. These clusters, which are shown by mass spectrometry to be significantly more stable than expected for typical electrostatic ion clusters, involve hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid, carboxylate, and hydroxyl groups, with rapid hydrogen bond breaking and re-formation observed to average the ¹H chemical shifts. The formation of a partial bilayer liquid crystal (LC) phase was identified by SAXS and polarizing optical microscopy at temperatures below ∼293 K. The occurrence of this transition close to room temperature could be utilized as a potential temperature-induced "switch" of the anisotropic properties for particular applications. The presence of an isotropic component of approximately 23% was observed to coexist with the LC phase, as detected by polarizing optical microscopy and quantified by both ¹H-¹³C dipolar-chemical shift correlation (DIPSHIFT) and ¹H double-quantum (DQ) MAS NMR experiments. At temperatures above the LC-to-isotropic transition, intermediate-range order (clustering of polar and nonpolar domains), a feature of many ILs, persists. Site-specific order parameters for the LC phase of CAGE-oct were obtained from the MAS NMR measurement of the partially averaged ¹³C-¹H dipolar couplings (D_CH) by cross-polarization (CP) build-up curves and DIPSHIFT experiments, and ¹H-¹H dipolar couplings (D_HH) by double-quantum (DQ) build-up curves. The corresponding order parameters, S_CH and S_HH, are in the range 0-0.2 and are lower compared to those for smectic (i.e., layered) phases of conventional nonionic liquid crystals, resembling those of lamellar phases formed by lyotropic surfactant-solvent systems.

Diffusivity maximum in a reentrant nematic phase

We report molecular dynamics simulations of confined liquid crystals using the Gay–Berne–Kihara model. Upon isobaric cooling, the standard sequence of isotropic–nematic–smectic A phase transitions is found. Upon further cooling a reentrant nematic phase occurs. We investigate the temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficient of the fluid in the nematic, smectic and reentrant nematic phases. We find a maximum in diffusivity upon isobaric cooling. Diffusion increases dramatically in the reentrant phase due to the high orientational molecular order. As the temperature is lowered, the diffusion coefficient follows an Arrhenius behavior. The activation energy of the reentrant phase is found in reasonable agreement with the reported experimental data. We discuss how repulsive interactions may be the underlying mechanism that could explain the occurrence of reentrant nematic behavior for polar and non-polar molecules.

Structure and dynamics of reentrant nematics: any open questions after almost 40 years?

Liquid crystals have attracted enormous interest because of the variety of their phases and richness of their application. The interplay of general physical symmetries and specific molecular features generates a myriad of different phenomena. A surprising behavior of liquid crystals is the reentrancy of phases as temperature, pressure, or concentration are varied. Here, we review the main experimental facts and the different theoretical scenarios that have guided the understanding of bulk reentrant nematics. Recently, some computer simulations of a system confined to nanoscopic scales have found new dynamical features of the reentrant nematic phase. We discuss this prediction in relation with the available experimental evidence on reentrant nematics and with the dynamics of liquids in strongly confined environments.

Deuteron NMR study of molecular dynamics in a compound exhibiting a reentrant nematic phase

A deuteron NMR study of molecular dynamics in the partial bilayer smectic A(d) and reentrant nematic phases of a pure chain-deuterated compound is presented. The deuteron spin-lattice relaxation times T(1Z) and T(1Q) were measured as a function of temperature for two different frequencies (15 and 46 MHz). The experimental results were interpreted in terms of the internal conformational motions of a chain decoupled from the molecular small-step rotational diffusion and the order director fluctuations. The latter motion was found to be essential to the fit of experimental results in the reentrant nematic phase. The fitting parameters obtained by using a global target fitting method are acceptable when compared with those obtained from other deuteron and proton NMR studies of the same mesophases.
