A real-time optimization method for economic and effective operation of electrostatic precipitators

Electrostatic precipitators (ESP) have been considered as the main particulate matter (PM) removal facility in the energy industry. This paper presents a real-time optimization method for a one-chamber industrial ESP in an ultra-low emission power plant with an intelligent optimization system (IOS). The IOS seeks to optimize the energy consumption of ESP subject to the outlet concentration requirement in real-time. A coordination control logic is designed to regulate the optimized operation set points with varying operation conditions. The operation optimized by the IOS is compared with the operations under PID (proportion-integral-derivative) and manual control. The results show that the IOS improves the emission compliance rate from 95% of manual control to 100% and the medium concentration is tuned to be 46.6% closer to the emission target. Furthermore, a good balance between emission and energy consumption is achieved, with 35.50% energy conservation for the same emission upper limit of 30 mg/m³. These results prove that the IOS significantly contributes to the efficient operation and economic PM removal by ESP for the energy industry.

IMPLICATIONS

Electrostatic precipitators (ESP) is one of the main PM removal facilities in coal-fired power plants. An intelligent optimization system (IOS) with prediction, optimization, and control modules is designed and constructed for the ESP in an ultra-low emission power plant. A PM removal model is used to predict the outlet concentration of the ESP. The optimal energy consumption of ESP subject to the outlet concentration requirement problem is solved by the particle swarm optimization. A closed-loop and rapping tolerant method is used to eliminate the fluctuation in time-averaged concentration. The system raised is able to ensure the compliance rate while decreasing the energy consumption of the ESP.

Integration of novel hybrid composite discharge electrode with semi-pilot novel cross-flow electrostatic precipitator

Wet electrostatic precipitators (WESPs) are modern-era pollution control systems specifically designed to capture ultrafine particles as well as acid mist, highly resistive and sticky particles; however, this requires the use of expensive corrosion-resistant metal alloys. The work presented here is part of a continuing study at Ohio University aimed at reducing the cost of WESPs by using a novel combination of a polymer collector surfaces with a hybrid composite discharge electrode. In this study, a hybrid composite discharge electrode was tested, for the first time, inside a semi-pilot-scale experimental setup, with collection surfaces consists of a vertical array of strands. Particle laden gases were passed through this array of polymer ropes, which were kept wet by a small flow of water. The discharge electrodes were composite laminates of carbon fibers in a polymer matrix enclosing a metal mesh. The preliminary results showed that this new integrated system of composite discharge electrode and polymer collector surfaces can match or exceed the performance of a conventional metal alloy electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with metal discharge electrodes. There are additional advantages due to the system being compact, lightweight, and highly corrosion resistant. Implications: This study focused on integrating and assessing performance of a novel hybrid composite electrode (HCE) inside semi-pilot novel cross-flow electrostatic precipitator at conditions typically observed in coal-fired power plant exhausts. The results were collected for particulate collection efficiencies and were compared with a rigid metal electrode. The HCE outperformed metal electrode by showing higher particulate collection efficiency. This result showcases substantial potential for these two new technologies (HCE and cross-flow system) as a substitute for conventional metal based wet ESPs.

Current density distribution and optimization of the collection electrodes of a honeycomb wet electrostatic precipitator

Wet electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) demonstrate a robust adaptability for particulate matter control and have been confirmed to be a promising technology for removing particles and sulfuric acid aerosol from flue gas. Recent studies have shown that removing fine particles or sulfuric acid aerosol from wet ESPs requires further development. Among the components of wet ESPs, discharge electrode configurations are crucial for determining the performance of wet ESPs. This paper reports the corona discharge characteristics and removal performance of sulfuric acid aerosol using different discharge electrode configurations in a honeycomb wet ESP experimental system. Two key parameters, namely, V–I characteristics and current density distribution, with different discharge electrode geometries (e.g., electrode type, spike spacing, and spike length) and rotation angles, were investigated by using a novel electrical parameter measurement system to evaluate the effects of these parameters on corona discharge. The results showed that triple-spike and sawtooth electrodes exhibit the highest average current density. The average current density of the triple-spike electrode increased with the spike length from 10 mm to 20 mm, and the peak current density distribution on the collection electrode increased by 62.1%, but the current density decreased sharply away from the spike. Moreover, the average peak current density decreased by 30.1% when the spike spacing was 25 mm given the sharp point discharge suppression when spikes were significantly dense. The electrode configuration was optimized on the basis of the current density distribution. The highest removal efficiency of sulfuric acid aerosol was 99.2% at a specific collection area of 23.09 m² (m³ s⁻¹)⁻¹.
