Social Perceptions of Individuals Missing Upper Front Teeth

Although it is assumed that there are negative social consequences for individuals missing visible front teeth, no study of the way in which edentulous individuals were perceived in a social context and the potential social repercussions could be located. This initial study concerned college students' perceptions of individuals missing visible upper front teeth. 200 volunteers, 19 to 50 years of age ( M = 20.6, SD = 4.4), rated five photographs depicting tooth presence or absence, from a full dentition to missing as many as four upper front teeth, on social traits including attractiveness, health status, educational attainment, satisfaction with life, active social life, aggressiveness, intelligence, trustworthiness, amount of caring, friendship, dating, and likelihood to live as a neighbor. Analysis suggested a person missing visible teeth was more negatively perceived on all social traits than a person with full dentition. Results were strongest when students were proposed to be linked to the edentulous individual in a personal way, i.e., dating or living as neighbor. Men and women agreed on perceptions of social traits and dentition condition. These results suggest the presence of strong Western cultural values, whereby those who are missing teeth may experience significant barriers to personal and social success.

Tooth colour: a review of the literature

OBJECTIVES

To review current knowledge with respect to tooth colour and its measurement.

METHODS

'Medline' database for the period 1966 to the present day and 'ISI Web of Science' database for the period 1974 to the present day were searched electronically with key words tooth, teeth, colour and color.

CONCLUSIONS

The colour and appearance of teeth is a complex phenomenon, with many factors such as lighting conditions, translucency, opacity, light scattering, gloss and the human eye and brain influencing the overall perception of tooth colour. The measurement of tooth colour is possible via a number of methods including visual assessment with shade guides, spectrophotometry, colourimetry and computer analysis of digital images. These methods have successfully been used to measure longitudinal tooth colour changes when the dentition has undergone tooth whitening procedures.

Tooth color: effects on judgments of attractiveness and age

Tooth whitening has become a very popular procedure. Advertisements for whitening products imply that whiter teeth are more attractive than yellower teeth. We tested this idea empirically by manipulating the tooth color of pictures of male and female targets. Participants' ratings of attractiveness were not influenced by tooth color. Exp. 2 yielded a negative correlation between attractiveness and age ratings: targets judged to be older were rated as less attractive. Unless whiter teeth help in some other way, e.g., improved self-esteem or confidence, it seems that tooth whitening procedures or products are not associated with increased attractiveness to others.

Psychological effects of aesthetic dental treatment

OBJECTIVE

To demonstrate that aesthetic restorative dental treatment, using the porcelain laminate veneer, has a positive effect on the self-esteem of a patient.

METHODS

A study group of 17 patients, unhappy with their dental appearance, were assessed psychologically at the pre-operative, immediate post operative and 6 month review stages. Porcelain laminate veneer restorations were used to improve the dental aesthetics for the patients in the study group. A comparison group of 27 subjects, without a dental appearance problem, were also psychologically assessed at comparable intervals. The assessments included Cattell's 16PF Personality Inventory, a Body-Esteem index, a computer administered version of the Repertory Grid technique and semi-structured interviews.

RESULTS

The results showed that there were no significant differences between the study and comparison groups on any first or second-order factor of the 16PF. However, highly significant changes in a positive direction (p < 0.005) were observed in the study group in responses to a Body-Esteem questionnaire at each stage in the procedure. Comparison group changes were not significant. Repertory Grid analyses showed a significant overall convergence in the study group compared with the comparison group. There were also significant positive shifts amongst the study group in the normalised ratings of "self' on several of the constructs. Interviews confirmed the Repertory Grid findings.

CONCLUSIONS

The study shows that aesthetic restorative treatment has a positive effect on patients' self-esteem.
