Relationship of breastfeeding self-efficacy with quality of life in Iranian breastfeeding mothers

Does Preoperative Pain Belief Affect Postoperative Pain and Breastfeeding?

PURPOSE

This research was carried out to determine the relationship between pain belief of women who experienced cesarean section for the first time and their postcesarean pain and breastfeeding self-efficacy levels.

DESIGN

The research is a descriptive study.

METHODS

The study was conducted with 144 patients who had not undergone any surgical operation and had their first cesarean section. Data were collected with an introductory information form, pain beliefs questionnaire (PBQ), visual analog scale (VAS), and breastfeeding self-efficacy scale (BSES).

FINDINGS

The patients' PBQ organic belief score (3.06 ± 0.61) was higher than their PBQ psychological belief score (1.87 ± 0.83), and their pain beliefs were based on an organic cause. The postcesarean section pain of the women was moderate-severe (6.75 ± 1.71), breastfeeding self-efficacy levels were high and sufficient (57.88 ± 4.86), and their pain beliefs were of organic origin. There was no significant relationship between patients' pain beliefs and postcesarean pain and breastfeeding self-efficacy levels.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of our study indicate that working status, income status, and chronic illness were associated with patients' pain beliefs, but we observed no relationship between pain beliefs and postcesarean pain and breastfeeding self-efficacy levels.

The effect of educational support intervention including peer groups for infant care on the growth rates of infants, breastfeeding self-efficacy and quality of life of their mothers in Iran: study protocol

BACKGROUND

Mothers' knowledge about the infant's problems and will provide the necessary care can increase the mother's confidence in providing care for her infant and eliminate misconceptions in primiparous mothers. The present study will be conducted to evaluate the effect of educational support intervention including peer groups for infant care on the growth rates of infants, breastfeeding self-efficacy and quality of life of their mothers in Iran.

METHODS

This quasi-experimental study is an educational support intervention protocol for infant care which will be conducted in two phases. The educational support program will be designed in the first phase. The program includes educational sessions on breastfeeding, growth and development of infants and care for children under 1 year of age in a virtual group where a physician, a nurse, a midwife and a healthcare provider are also present. Using the opinions of the experts, the peer group will discuss various points and the research team will finalize the program based on priorities. The second phase of the educational intervention will be conducted experimentally as a pretest-posttest design for the intervention and control groups.

DISCUSSION

The present study will provide useful protocol about the effect of educational support intervention for infant care and the sharing of peer group experiences on infants' growth rates, breastfeeding self-efficacy, and quality of life of their mothers. The current educational package not only combines virtual education and peer experiences in strengthening the education of mothers, but also it can improve mothers' physical and mental health and reduce medical costs by using telephone follow-up in supporting of the mothers of infants.

Promoting maternal self efficacy and paternal attitudes towards breastfeeding: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Counseling is one of the ways to improve the quantity and quality of breastfeeding. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of couple-centered counseling on fathers' attitudes and mothers' self-efficacy towards breastfeeding.

METHODS

This randomized controlled trial study was conducted on 60 primigravida pregnant women and their spouses who were randomly selected among the pregnant women referred to the two maternity hospitals of Malayer City, a city in the province Hamadan in western Iran. Data collection tools included the demographic characteristics questionnaire, Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, and Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale. The intervention was performed according to the principles of GATHER counseling (Greet, Ask, Tell, Help, Explain, and Return). Mothers' self-efficacy and fathers' attitudes toward breastfeeding were assessed before the intervention and 4 weeks after birth in both groups. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 23 software and using a significance level of p = 0.05.

RESULTS

The participants of the control and test groups were homogeneous in terms of demographic characteristics. The change in mothers' breastfeeding self-efficacy score after intervention in the test group had a statistically significant difference compared to the control group (30.43 ± 2.53; 95%CI: 25.41,35.44), and the change in the score of fathers' attitude towards breastfeeding had a statistically significant difference after the intervention in the test group compared to the control group (19.3 ± 2.05; 95%CI: -23.36, -15.23). In the test group, the change in fathers' attitude towards breastfeeding after the intervention was significant compared to before the intervention (30.36 ± 2.38; 95%CI: 25.43, 35.25).

CONCLUSIONS

Appropriate counseling programs can change fathers' attitudes toward breastfeeding and increase mothers' breastfeeding self-efficacy, so couples' presence in breastfeeding counseling is recommended.

Psychometric Assessment of the Paternal Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis of Malawian Fathers

BACKGROUND

Only 61% of Malawian women exclusively breastfeed to the recommended 6 months. Paternal support is predictive of exclusive breastfeeding, and significantly related to paternal breastfeeding self-efficacy, defined as fathers' confidence in their ability to assist mothers with breastfeeding.

RESEARCH AIMS

To (1) examine the psychometric properties of the Paternal Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF) in Malawian fathers, including internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, construct validity using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and convergent validity; and (2) assess the relationship between the BSES-SF and paternal demographic and health factors.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted at a maternity hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi, and 180 fathers whose partners had delivered a singleton infant were included. Participants completed the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale and Quality of Life with confirmatory factor analysis performed to assess the construct validity. The internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability were evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and intra-class correlations. Convergent validity was also assessed.

RESULTS

A unidimensional factorial structure of the Malawian Paternal BSES-SF was identified using confirmatory factor analysis. The scale had an excellent Cronbach's alpha of .90 and a test-retest reliability of .93. Participants' breastfeeding self-efficacy was significantly correlated with the Quality of Life domains of psychological health (r = .23; p < .01), social relationships (r = .28; p < .001), and environmental health (r = .30; p < .001). Participants who were older, married, and with ≥ two children had significantly higher breastfeeding self-efficacy and were more confident in their ability to support their partner's breastfeeding.

CONCLUSION

The Paternal Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form was a valid and reliable measure to assess fathers' confidence in their ability to assist mothers with breastfeeding in Malawi.

Stress, locus of control, hope and depression as determinants of quality of life of pregnant women: Croatian Islands' Birth Cohort Study (CRIBS)

The aims were to investigate determinants of the quality of life (QoL) of pregnant women. Total of 302 healthy women 18 to 28 weeks of gestation participated in prospective study. WHOQOL-bref, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the perceived stress appraisals were administered. Various patterns of predictors for four domains of QoL were identified, for psychological (42% variance explained), social relationship (29%), environmental (29%) and physical health (25%). Depression and hope, together with the extent to which one's health is influenced by powerful other or chance should be targeted in health promotion strategies during pregnancy.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Maternal Attachment and Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy and Affecting Factors in Turkish Sample

PURPOSE

This research aimed to investigate the factors affecting the perception of mothers about breastfeeding self-efficacy and their maternal attachment between the fourth and eighth postnatal weeks and their relation.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This research, which is descriptive, was conducted on 351 postpartum women between December 2017-2018. The study used the Mother Descriptive Information Form, Maternal Attachment Inventory (MAI), and the Short Form of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES-SF).

RESULTS

It was found that, mothers' mean scores on the BSES-SF and MAI were affected by their educational level, the status of regular health checkups during the last pregnancy, the number of visits for health checkups during the last pregnancy, the place where they held their babies, the status of breastfeeding previous babies, prenatal breastfeeding training, the status of finding their own breast milk sufficient, the time when they first breastfed the baby, the first food the baby received, the status of being willing to breastfeed, the status of having fatigue due to breastfeeding, the planned duration of breastfeeding, the status of using additional infant formula, and the status of having a close relative or friend also breastfeeding. It was also determined that there was a low positive relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy and maternal attachment.

CONCLUSIONS

The level of breastfeeding self-efficacy and maternal attachment status of mothers should be determined in the postpartum period, and health personnel should intervene on alterable factors that adversely affect breastfeeding self-efficacy and attachment status, especially in mothers at risk.

Translation, Validation, and Psychometric Properties of Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form Among Iranian Women

BACKGROUND

Iranian researchers have investigated breastfeeding self-efficacy and its related factors. However, there is no valid and reliable tool for assessing the breastfeeding self-efficacy of Iranian Farsi-speaking women.

RESEARCH AIM

To examine the validity and reliability of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form among Iranian Farsi-speaking mothers.

METHODS

We conducted this cross-sectional study at Izadi teaching hospital in Qom, Iran. Using convenience sampling, we recruited 174 mothers, who completed the questionnaire on the first postnatal day. A forward-backward translation method was used to translate the scale. Cronbach's alpha and item-total characteristics were examined to test reliability. Construct validity was evaluated via principal component analysis (PCA), as well as known-groups validity.

RESULTS

The mean (standard deviation) of sample age was 28.33 (5.38). The mean (standard deviation) of breastfeeding self-efficacy score was 54.32 (10.50), ranging from 24-70. Cronbach's alpha (.92), inter-item correlations (.21-.72), and corrected item-total correlations (.44-.75) indicated the adequate reliability of the scale. PCA yielded one component with an eigenvalue of 6.97, explaining 49.8% of the total variance. There was no significant difference in the self-efficacy scores between primiparous and multiparous women. Breastfeeding self-efficacy was not significantly different between the groups in terms of the demographic characteristics.

CONCLUSION

The Farsi version of the Breastfeeding Self-efficacy Scale-Short Form is a valid and reliable instrument for Iranian Farsi-speaking mothers, with sound psychometric properties per the other studies worldwide.
