3-Carboxy-indole derivatives from the deep-sea-derived fungus Phomopsis tersa FS441

Three new compounds phomtersines A-C (1-3) together with nine known compounds were isolated from the marine-derived fungus Phomopsis tersa FS441. Their structures were sufficiently established by spectroscopic methods, including extensive 1D and 2D NMR techniques and modified Snatzke's method. Moreover, compounds 1-12 were evaluated for cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities. As a result, phomtersine B (2) and the known compound 10 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against the four tested cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 20.21 to 36.53 μM, and phomtersine A (1) exhibited moderate inhibitory activity against LPS-induced NO production.

Phytotoxic Metabolites Isolated from Aspergillus sp., an Endophytic Fungus of Crassula arborescens

Aspergillus sp., an endophytic fungus isolated from Crassula arborescens, displayed potent inhibitory activity against the seed germination of Arabidopsis thaliana. The bioactivity-guided fractionation of the culture extract of Aspergillus sp. MJ01 led to the isolation of nine compounds, including one previously undescribed furanone, namely aspertamarinoic acid (1), and eight known compounds, (-)-dihydrocanadensolide (2), kojic acid (3), citreoisocoumarin (4), astellolide A (5), astellolide B (6), astellolide G (7), cyclo-N-methylphenylalanyltryptophenyl (8) and (-)-ditryptophenaline (9). In the evaluation of the phytotoxic activities of compounds 1-9, the results suggested that 1 and 5 showed significant inhibitory activity on the seed germination of A. thaliana. This is the first report to disclose the phytotoxic activity of these compounds.

Recent studies on terpenoids in Aspergillus fungi: Chemical diversity, biosynthesis, and bioactivity

Metabolites from fungi are a major source of natural small molecule drugs in addition to plants, while fungal derived terpenoids have been confirmed to have great potentials in many diseases. Aspergillus fungi are distributed in every corner of the earth, and their terpenoid metabolites exhibit promising diversity in term of both their chemistry and bioactivity. This review attempted to provide timely and comprehensive coverage of chemical, biosynthesis, and biological studies on terpenoids discovered from the genus Aspergillus, including mono-, sesqui-, di-, sester-, tri-, and meroterpenoids, in the last decade. The structural characteristics, biosynthesis, and pharmacological activities of 288 terpenoids were introduced.

A new dimeric naphtho-γ-pyrone from an endophytic fungus Aspergillus niger AKRN associated with the roots of Entandrophragma congoënse collected in Cameroon

A new dimeric naphtho-γ-pyrone, 2-hydroxydihydronigerone (1), along with five compounds, nigerone (2), pyrophen (3), kojic acid (4), 4-(hydroxymethyl)-5-hydroxy-2H-pyran-2-one (5), and p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (6), was isolated from an endophytic fungus Aspergillus niger AKRN associated with the roots of Entandrophragma congoënse. The structure of the new compound has been elucidated using spectroscopic data including 1D and 2D NMR as well as the high-resolution mass spectrometry. Compounds 1–5 showed weak antimicrobial activity on five selected Gram-negative bacteria, namely Enterobacter aerogenes (CM64), Enterobacter cloacae (BM67), Klebsiella pneumonia (K2), and Escherichia coli (ATCC8739 and ATCC10536).
