Essential oil obtained from micropropagated lavender, its effect on HSF cells and application in cosmetic emulsion as a natural protective substance

Chemical Composition, Total Phenolic Content, and Antioxidant Activity of the Essential Oils Extracted from the Needle of Ten Pinus Taxa

This study investigated the chemical compositions of essential oils (EOs) from ten taxa belonging to the Pinus genus. The studied taxa that grow wildly in China, and the EOs were extracted by steam distillation; the chemical compositions were isolated and characterized by GC-MS. Eighty-one components, representing over 92.10% of the EOs, were identified. The main constituents of EOs were α-pinene (6.44%–53.00%), β-caryophyllene (2.43%–24.64%), β-pinene (0.00%–22.32%), δ-cadinene (2.56%–17.56%), germacrene D (0.74%–11.38%), and camphene (0.78%–10.48%). Furthermore, we determined the total phenolic content (TPC) of the EOs, with the values from 26.50 to 60.01 mg eq GAE/mL EO. DPPH free radical scavenging activity (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and ABTS radical cation scavenging activity (ABTS) were used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the EOs, and the obtained values were ranged from 499.15 to 1,272.75 mmol eq Trolox/mL EO, 1,255.67 to 3,857.93 mmol eq Trolox/mL EO, and 370.81 to 1,677.19 mmol eq Trolox/mL EO, respectively. The results showed that all of the EOs studied had strong antioxidant activity, and these pine plants could be used as natural antioxidants in functional food and pharmaceutical industries.

Essential oils used in dermocosmetics: Review about its biological activities

INTRODUCTION

Currently, the demand for the use of constituents of natural origin in cosmetic formulations in detriment of synthetic compounds is noticeable. Several studies assess the potential of essential oils when incorporated into various cosmetic formulations and study their biological activities. This work intends to prepare a literature review on essential oils tested in dermocosmetic formulations and whose biological activities were evaluated through in vitro and/or in vivo tests. The main objectives for this study were as follows: to identify the essential oils that have been used in cosmetic formulations; and compile information on the main biological activities tested in cosmetic formulations.

METHODS

A search was carried out until 2021 in the scientific databases PubMed and Web of Science, using different search terms, and several scientific articles from in vitro and in vivo studies in animals and clinical trials were selected and analyzed of involving development dermocosmetic formulations containing essential oils and the analysis of their biological activities.

RESULTS

These studies demonstrate that the antimicrobial activity (antibacterial and antifungal) is the one most studied, mainly through in vitro tests. In vivo studies were also carried out either in animals or in clinical studies showing different effects, such as repellent action, inhibition of hair growth, and action against migraine. Regarding formulations, it was evident that creams are the most used.

CONCLUSIONS

There is enormous potential for the use of essential oils in future formulations in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry, in particular as preservatives, exploring their other biological activities.

Chemical Composition and Bioactivity of Essential Oil of Ten Labiatae Species

Using antibiotics as feed additives have been successively banned worldwide from 1986; therefore, it is an urgent task to finding safe and effective alternatives. As natural products of plant origin, essential oils (EOs) are an outstanding option due to their reported bioactivity. In this research, ten EOs of Labiatae species were extracted by steam distillation and its chemical constituents were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 123 chemical compounds, including alkenes, phenols, aldehydes and ketones, were identified. The results of antioxidant activity carried out through DPPH free radical scavenging (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), showing that EOs of Ocimum basilicum Linn. (ObEO), Thymus mongolicus Ronn. (TmEO), Origanum vulgare Linn. (OvEO) and Mosla chinensis Maxim. (McEO) have strong antioxidant activities. Their 50%-inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) value was <1.00, 1.42, 1.47 and 1.92 μg/mL, respectively; and their FRAP value was 1536.67 ± 24.22, 271.84 ± 4.93, 633.71 ± 13.14 and 480.66 ± 29.90, respectively. The results of filter paper diffusion showing that McEO, OvEO and TmEO inhibition zone diameter (IZD) are all over 30 mm. The results of two-fold dilution method showed that McEO, OvEO and TmEO have strong antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and their minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) value was 1 μL/mL, 2 μL/mL, and 2 μL/mL, respectively. In conclusion, the results in this work demonstrate the possibility for development and application of EOs as potential feed additives.

[Trifocal bone transport by using monolateral rail system in treatment of bone defects caused by post-traumatic tibial osteomyelitis]

OBJECTIVE

To study the effectiveness of trifocal bone transport by using monolateral rail system in the treatment of bone defects caused by post-traumatic tibial osteomyelitis.

METHODS

The clinical data of 28 patients with tibial defects caused by post-traumatic osteomyelitis treated with trifocal bone transport technique by using monolateral rail system between January 2012 and June 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 26 males and 2 females, aged 22-59 years (mean, 41.3 years). The causes of injury included 13 cases of traffic accident injury, 9 cases of falling from height, 4 cases of heavy object injury, and 2 cases of crushing injury. The disease duration was 4.5-17.0 months (mean, 7.1 months). The length of bone defect was 6.5-16.8 cm (mean, 10.3 cm). And the range of soft tissue defect ranged from 3.5 cm×2.0 cm to 18.0 cm×11.0 cm. The bone transporting time, external fixation time, duration of regenerate consolidation, and external fixation index were recorded, and the complications were observed. At last follow-up, the bone and functional results were evaluated according to the criteria given by Association for the Study and Application of the Method of the Ilizarov (ASAMI).

RESULTS

All patients were successfully followed up after removing the external fixator with an average of 35 months (range, 24-65 months). The bone transporting time was 41-136 days (mean, 60.2 days), the external fixation time was 7.5-20.0 months (mean, 13.4 months), the external fixation index was 1.1-1.9 months/cm (mean, 1.4 months/cm), the duration of regenerate consolidation was 6.0-16.5 months (mean, 10.5 months). Pin tract infection occurred in 12 cases, delayed union on docking site was occurred in 9 cases, axial deviation was observed in 2 cases, poor regenerate consolidation was presented in 1 case, and refracture on docking site after fixator removal was occurred in 1 case. There was no recurrence of infection, amputation, vascular and neurologic complications, and osteofascial compartment syndrome. At last follow-up, according to ASAMI criterion, the bone healing results were excellent in 17 cases, good in 7 cases, and fair in 4 cases, with an excellent and good rate of 85.7%; the functional results were excellent in 15 cases, good in 10 cases, and fair in 3 cases, with an excellent and good rate of 89.3%.

CONCLUSION

Trifocal bone transport by using monolateral rail system is an effective method in the treatment of bone defect caused by post-traumatic osteomyelitis which can reduce bone transport time, external fixation time, and complications.
