Agricultural Solid Wastes Based Adsorbent Materials in the Remediation of Heavy Metal Ions from Water and Wastewater by Adsorption: A Review

Adsorption has become the most popular and effective separation technique that is used across the water and wastewater treatment industries. However, the present research direction is focused on the development of various solid waste-based adsorbents as an alternative to costly commercial activated carbon adsorbents, which make the adsorptive separation process more effective, and on popularising the sustainable options for the remediation of pollutants. Therefore, there are a large number of reported results available on the application of raw or treated agricultural biomass-based alternatives as effective adsorbents for aqueous-phase heavy metal ion removal in batch adsorption studies. The goal of this review article was to provide a comprehensive compilation of scattered literature information and an up-to-date overview of the development of the current state of knowledge, based on various batch adsorption research papers that utilised a wide range of raw, modified, and treated agricultural solid waste biomass-based adsorbents for the adsorptive removal of aqueous-phase heavy metal ions. Metal ion pollution and its source, toxicity effects, and treatment technologies, mainly via adsorption, have been reviewed here in detail. Emphasis has been placed on the removal of heavy metal ions using a wide range of agricultural by-product-based adsorbents under various physicochemical process conditions. Information available in the literature on various important influential physicochemical process parameters, such as the metal concentration, agricultural solid waste adsorbent dose, solution pH, and solution temperature, and importantly, the adsorbent characteristics of metal ion removal, have been reviewed and critically analysed here. Finally, from the literature reviewed, future perspectives and conclusions were presented, and a few future research directions have been proposed.

Adsorptive removal of hazardous dye (crystal violet) using bay leaves (Laurus nobilis L.): surface characterization, batch adsorption studies, and statistical analysis

In this study, the surface properties of Laurus nobilis L. were determined by inverse gas chromatography. From this, the surface of Laurus nobilis L. was found to be an acidic ([Formula: see text]). Then, the adsorption of hazardous crystal violet dye on Laurus nobilis L. was examined. For the adsorption process, the optimum conditions were determined as contact time (60 min), adsorbent dosage (1.0 g/L), agitation rate (200 rpm), and initial pH (≅ 7). The efficiencies of initial concentration, contact time, temperature, and their binary combinations on the improvement of adsorption percentage were statistically investigated via three different two-way ANOVA analyses. Adsorption data were applied to different isotherms, and it was determined that the Langmuir isotherm (r² = 0.9998) was the most suitable isotherm for the adsorption process. The [Formula: see text] value was calculated as 400.0 mg/g at 25 °C from the Langmuir isotherm. According to kinetic models, it was observed that the adsorption occurred in three steps. According to enthalpy (+ 7.52 kJ/mol), activation energy (+ 8.91 kJ/mol), and Gibbs free energy (- 30.0 kJ/mol) values, it was determined that the adsorption occurred endothermically and spontaneously. As a result of reusability studies, it was determined that the adsorbent could be used repeatedly.

Adsorption of Zn2+ from Synthetic Wastewater Using Dried Watermelon Rind (D-WMR): An Overview of Nonlinear and Linear Regression and Error Analysis

Sustainable wastewater treatment is one of the biggest issues of the 21st century. Metals such as Zn²⁺ have been released into the environment due to rapid industrial development. In this study, dried watermelon rind (D-WMR) is used as a low-cost adsorption material to assess natural adsorbents' ability to remove Zn²⁺ from synthetic wastewater. D-WMR was characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). According to the results of the analysis, the D-WMR has two colours, white and black, and a significant concentration of mesoporous silica (83.70%). Moreover, after three hours of contact time in a synthetic solution with 400 mg/L Zn²⁺ concentration at pH 8 and 30 to 40 °C, the highest adsorption capacity of Zn²⁺ onto 1.5 g D-WMR adsorbent dose with 150 μm particle size was 25 mg/g. The experimental equilibrium data of Zn²⁺ onto D-WMR was utilized to compare nonlinear and linear isotherm and kinetics models for parameter determination. The best models for fitting equilibrium data were nonlinear Langmuir and pseudo-second models with lower error functions. Consequently, the potential use of D-WMR as a natural adsorbent for Zn²⁺ removal was highlighted, and error analysis indicated that nonlinear models best explain the adsorption data.
