Pathological impact and medical applications of electromagnetic field on melanoma: A focused review

Electromagnetic Field (EMF) influences melanoma in various ways. EMF can be classified into extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field, low-frequency magnetic field, static moderate magnetic field, strong electromagnetic field, alternating magnetic field, and magnetic nanoparticles. Each type of EMF influences melanoma development differently, and the detailed influence of each specific type of EMF on melanoma is reviewed. Furthermore, EMF influences melanoma cell polarity and hence affects drug uptake. In this review, the impacts of EMF on the effectiveness of drugs used to treat melanoma are listed according to drug types, with detailed effects according to the types of EMF and specific melanoma cell lines. EMF also impacts clinical therapies of melanoma, including localized magnetic hyperthermia, focalized thermotherapy, proton radiation treatment, nanostructure heating magnetic hyperthermia, radiation therapy, Polycaprolactone-Fe₃O₄ fiber mat-based bandage, and optune therapy. Above all, EMF has huge potential in melanoma treatment.

Photodynamic effect of light emitting diodes on E. coli and human skin cells induced by a graphene-based ternary composite

In this paper, the photodynamic effect of a ternary nanocomposite (TiO₂-Ag/graphene) on Escherichia coli bacteria and two human cell lines: A375 (melanoma) and HaCaT (keratinocyte) after exposure to different wavelength domains (blue, green or red-Light Emitting Diode, LED) was analyzed. The results obtained through bioassays were correlated with the morphological, structural and spectral data obtained through FT-IR, XPS and UV-Vis spectroscopy, powder X-Ray diffractometry (XRD) and STEM/EDX techniques, leading to conclusions that showed different photodynamic activation mechanisms and effects on bacteria and human cells, depending on the wavelength. The nanocomposite proved a therapeutic potential for blue light-activated antibacterial treatment and revealed a keratinocyte cytotoxic effect under blue and green LEDs. The red light-nanocomposite duo gave a metabolic boost to normal keratinocytes and induced stasis to melanoma cells. The light and nanocomposite combination could be a potential therapy for bacterial keratosis or for skin tumors.

The review of the light parameters and mechanisms of Photobiomodulation on melanoma cells

Photobiomodulation (PBM) uses low-intensity visible or near-infrared light to produce beneficial effects on cells or tissues, such as brain therapy, wound healing. Still there is no consistent recommendation on the parameters (dose, light mode, wavelength, irradiance) and protocols (repetition, treatment duration) for its clinical application. Herein, we summarize the current PBM parameters for the treatment of melanoma, and we also discuss the potential photoreceptors and downstream signaling mechanisms in the PBM treatment of melanoma cells. It is hypothesized that PBM may inhibit the melanoma cells by activating mitochondria, OPNs, and other receptors. Regardless of the underlying mechanisms, PBM has been shown to be beneficial in treating melanoma. Through further in-depth studies of the underlying potential mechanisms, it can strengthen the applications of PBM for the therapy of melanoma.
