Abstract
Increasing soil and water salinity threatens global agriculture, particularly affecting rice. This study investigated the residual effects of microbial biochar and nitrogen fertilizer in mitigating salt stress in paddy soil and regulating the biochemical characteristics of rice plants. Two rice varieties, Shuang Liang You 138 (SLY138), a salt-tolerant, and Jing Liang You 534 (JLY534), a salt-sensitive, were grown under 0.4 ds/m EC (S0) and 6.84 ds/m EC (S1) in a glass house under controlled conditions. Three types of biochar-rice straw biochar (BC), fungal biochar (BF), and bacterial biochar (BB)-were applied alongside two nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates (60 kg ha-1 and 120 kg ha-1) in a previous study. The required salinity levels were maintained in respective pots through the application of saline irrigation water. Results showed that residual effects of microbial biochars (BF and BB) had higher salt mitigation efficiency than sole BC. The combination of BB and N fertilizer (BB + N120) significantly decreased soil pH by 23.45% and Na+ levels by 46.85%, creating a more conducive environment for rice growth by enhancing beneficial microbial abundance and decreasing pathogenic fungi in saline soil. Microbial biochars (BF and BB) positively improved soil properties (physicochemical) and biochemical and physiological properties of plants, ultimately rice growth. SLY138 significantly had a less severe response to salt stress compared to JLY534. The mitigation effects of BB + N120 kg ha-1 were particularly favorable for SLY138. In summary, the combined residual effect of BF and BB with N120 kg ha-1, especially bacterial biochar (BB), played a positive role in alleviating salt stress on rice growth, suggesting its potential utility for enhancing rice yield in paddy fields.

Abstract
The bile acid sodium symporter (BASS) family plays an important role in transporting substances and coordinating plants' salt tolerance. However, the function of BASS in Brassica rapa has not yet been elucidated. In this study, eight BrBASS genes distributed on five chromosomes were identified that belonged to four subfamilies. Expression profile analysis showed that BrBASS7 was highly expressed in roots, whereas BrBASS4 was highly expressed in flowers. The promoter element analysis also identified several typical homeopathic elements involved in abiotic stress tolerance and stress-related hormonal responses. Notably, under salt stress, the expression of BrBASS2 was significantly upregulated; under osmotic stress, that of BrBASS4 increased and then decreased; and under cold stress, that of BrBASS7 generally declined. The protein-protein interaction analysis revealed that the BrBASS2 homologous gene AtBASS2 interacted with Nhd1 (N-mediated heading date-1) to alleviate salt stress in plants, while the BrBASS4 homologous gene AtBASS3 interacted with BLOS1 (biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex 1 subunit 1) via co-regulation with SNX1 (sorting nexin 1) to mitigate an unfavorable growing environment for roots. Further, Bra-miR396 (Bra-microRNA396) targeting BrBASS4 and BrBASS7 played a role in the plant response to osmotic and cold stress conditions, respectively. This research demonstrates that BrBASS2, BrBASS4, and BrBASS7 harbor great potential for regulating abiotic stresses. The findings will help advance the study of the functions of the BrBASS gene family.

Abstract
Salt stress is one of the major adverse factors affecting plant growth and crop production. Rapeseed is an important oil crop, providing high-quality edible oil for human consumption. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of salt stress on the phenotypic traits and physiological processes of rapeseed. The soil salinity was manipulated by setting three different levels: 0 g NaCl kg-1 soil (referred to as S0), 1.5 g NaCl kg-1 soil (referred to as S1), and 3.0 g NaCl kg-1 soil (referred to as S2). In general, the results indicated that the plant height, leaf area, and root neck diameter decreased with an increase in soil salinity. In addition, the biomass of various organs at all growth stages decreased as soil salinity increased from S0 to S2. The increasing soil salinity improved the distribution of biomass in the root and leaf at the seedling and flowering stages, indicating that rapeseed plants subjected to salt stress during the vegetative stage are capable of adapting their growth pattern to sustain their capacity for nutrient and water uptake, as well as leaf photosynthesis. However, as the soil salinity increased, there was a decrease in the distribution of biomass in the pod and seed at the maturity stage, while an increase was observed in the root and stem, suggesting that salt stress inhibited carbohydrate transport into reproductive organs. Moreover, the C and N accumulation at the flowering and maturity stages exhibited a reduction in direct correlation with the increase in soil salinity. High soil salinity resulted in a reduction in the C/N, indicating that salt stress exerted a greater adverse effect on C assimilation compared to N assimilation, leading to an increase in seed protein content and a decrease in oil content. Furthermore, as soil salinity increased from S0 to S2, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and the content of soluble protein and sugar increased by 58.39%, 33.38%, 15.57%, and 13.88% at the seedling stage, and 38.69%, 22.85%, 12.04%, and 8.26% at the flowering stage, respectively. In summary, this study revealed that salt stress inhibited C and N assimilation, leading to a suppressed phenotype and biomass accumulation. The imbalanced C and N assimilation under salt stress contributed to the alterations in the seed oil and protein content. Rapeseed had a certain degree of salt tolerance by improving antioxidants and osmolytes.

Abstract
Salinity stress imposes severe constraints on plant growth and development. Here, we explored the impacts of prohexadione-calcium (Pro-Ca) on rapeseed growth under salt stress. We designed a randomized block design pot experiment using two rapeseed varieties, 'Huayouza 158R' and 'Huayouza 62'. We conducted six treatments, S0: non-primed + 0 mM NaCl, Pro-Ca+S0: Pro-Ca primed + 0 mM NaCl, S100: non-primed + 100 mM NaCl, Pro-Ca+S100: Pro-Ca primed + 100 mM NaCl, S150: non-primed + 150 mM NaCl, Pro-Ca+S150: Pro-Ca primed + 150 mM NaCl. The morphophysiological characteristics, and osmoregulatory and antioxidant activities were compared for primed and non-primed varieties. Our data analysis showed that salt stress induced morph-physiological traits and significantly reduced the antioxidant enzyme activities in both rapeseed varieties. The Pro-Ca primed treatment significantly improved seedlings, root, and shoot morphological traits and accumulated more dry matter biomass under salt stress. Compared to Huayouza 158R, Huayouza 62 performed better with the Pro-Ca primed treatment. The Pro-Ca primed treatment significantly enhanced chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr), and actual photochemical quantum efficiency (ФPSII). Furthermore, the Pro-Ca primed treatment also improved ascorbic acid (ASA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity, and stimulated the accumulation of soluble proteins. These findings strongly suggested that the Pro-Ca primed treatment may effectively counteract the negative impacts of salinity stress by regulating the morph-physiological and antioxidant traits.

Abstract
Abiotic stress caused by soil salinization remains a major global challenge that threatens and severely impacts crop growth, causing yield reduction worldwide. In this study, we aim to investigate the damage of salt stress on the leaf physiology of two varieties of rice (Huanghuazhan, HHZ, and Xiangliangyou900, XLY900) and the regulatory mechanism of Hemin to maintain seedling growth under the imposed stress. Rice leaves were sprayed with 5.0 μmol·L-1 Hemin or 25.0 μmol·L-1 ZnPP (Zinc protoporphyrin IX) at the three leaf and one heart stage, followed by an imposed salt stress treatment regime (50.0 mmol·L-1 sodium chloride (NaCl)). The findings revealed that NaCl stress increased antioxidant enzymes activities and decreased the content of nonenzymatic antioxidants such as ascorbate (AsA) and glutathione (GSH). Furthermore, the content of osmoregulatory substances like soluble proteins and proline was raised. Moreover, salt stress increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) content in the leaves of the two varieties. However, spraying with Hemin increased the activities of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) and accelerated AsA-GSH cycling to remove excess ROS. In summary, Hemin reduced the effect of salt stress on the physiological characteristics of rice leaves due to improved antioxidant defense mechanisms that impeded lipid peroxidation. Thus, Hemin was demonstrated to lessen the damage caused by salt stress.

Abstract
Drought is a major stress affecting rice yields. Combining partial root-zone drying (PRD) and different nitrogen fertilizers reduces the damage caused by water stress in rice. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we combined treatments with PRD and ammonia:nitrate nitrogen at 0:100 (PRD0:100) and 50:50 (PRD50:50) ratios or PEG and nitrate nitrogen at 0:100 (PEG0:100) ratios in rice. Physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses were performed on rice leaves to identify key genes involved in water stress tolerance under different nitrogen forms and PRD pretreatments. Our results indicated that, in contrast to PRD0:100, PRD50:50 elevated the superoxide dismutase activity in leaves to accelerate the scavenging of ROS accumulated by osmotic stress, attenuated the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation, stabilized photosynthesis, and elevated the relative water content of leaves to alleviate the drought-induced osmotic stress. Moreover, the alleviation ability was better under PRD50:50 treatment than under PRD0:100. Integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses of PRD0:100 vs PRD50:50 revealed that the differences in PRD involvement in water stress tolerance under different nitrogen pretreatments were mainly in photosynthesis, oxidative stress, nitrogen metabolism process, phytohormone signaling, and biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites. Some key genes may play an important role in these pathways, including OsGRX4, OsNDPK2, OsGS1;1, OsNR1.2, OsSUS7, and YGL8. Thus, the osmotic stress tolerance mediated by PRD and nitrogen cotreatment is influenced by different nitrogen forms. Our results provide new insights into osmotic stress tolerance mediated by PRD and nitrogen cotreatment, demonstrate the essential role of nitrogen morphology in PRD-induced molecular regulation, and identify genes that contribute to further improving stress tolerance in rice.

Abstract
Salt stress is a major adverse environmental factor limiting plant growth. Nitrogen (N) application is an effective strategy to alleviate the negative effects of salt stress on plants. To improve the knowledge of the mechanism of N application on alleviating salt stress on rapeseed seedlings, a pot experiment was conducted with four N application treatments (0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 g N kg-1 soil, referred to as N0, N1, N2, and N3, respectively) and exposed to non-salt stress (0 g NaCl kg-1 soil, referred to as S0) and salt stress (3 g NaCl kg-1 soil, referred to as S1) conditions. The results indicated that in comparison with non-salt stress, salt stress increased the Na content (236.53%) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (30.26%), resulting in cell membrane lipid peroxidation characterized by an increased content of malondialdehyde (MDA) (122.32%) and suppressed photosynthetic rate (15.59%), finally leading to inhibited plant growth such as shorter plant height, thinner root neck, lower leaf area, and decreased dry weight. N application improved the plant growth, and the improvement by N application under salt stress was stronger than that under non-salt stress, suggesting that rapeseed seedlings exposed to salt stress are more sensitive to N application and require N to support their growth. Moreover, seedlings exposed to salt stress under N application showed lower ROS accumulation; increased photosynthesis; higher antioxidants such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR), and ascorbic acid (AsA); and greater accumulation of osmotic substances including soluble protein, soluble sugar, and proline, as compared with seedlings without N application. In particular, the best improvement by N application under salt stress occurred at the N2 level, while too high N application could weaken the improvement due to inhibited N metabolism. In summary, this study suggests that moderate N application can improve photosynthesis, antioxidants, and osmoregulation to alleviate the adverse effects of salt stress in rapeseed seedlings.
