Abstract
A multifunctional and environmentally friendly composite film was developed by incorporating pomelo peel-derived carbon dots (PCDs) into a fish scale gelatin (FSG)/alginate dialdehyde (ADA) biopolymer matrix. ADA was used to reinforce the physicomechanical properties of the FSG film via Schiff base crosslinking. PCDs with strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The effect of various PCDs content on the surface morphological, physicochemical, and functional characteristics of the composite films was investigated. The results showed that the introduction of PCDs into the FSG/ADA matrix effectively reinforced the mechanical performance, enhanced the water vapor and water resistance, increased UV-light blocking, conferred fluorescence properties, and improved the thermal properties of the composite films. Under 3 wt% PCDs content, the FSG/ADA/PCDs-3 % composite film not only presented significant antioxidant capacity with a radical scavenging rate of 91.71 % for DPPH and approximately 100 % for ABTS, but also exhibited excellent antimicrobial ability against bacteria and fungi. Results of a preservation experiment showed that the prepared FSG/ADA/PCDs-3 % film preserved the physiological qualities of strawberries post-harvest and extended their shelf-life to 7 days at room temperature. Overall, the fabricated FSG/ADA/PCDs composite films are promising for use in eco-friendly active food packaging.

Abstract
At present, food waste has become a serious issue and the use of petroleum-based food packaging films has resulted in a series of potential hazards. Therefore, more attention has been focused on the development of new food packaging materials. The polysaccharide-based composite film loaded with active substances considered to be an excellent preservative material. A novel packaging film based on sodium alginate and konjac glucomannan (SA-KGM) blended with tea polyphenols (TP) was prepared in the present study. The excellent microstructure of films was shown by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was indicated by FTIR spectra that the components could interact with each other through hydrogen bonds, which was also confirmed by molecular docking simulation. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties, barrier property, oxidation property, antibacterial activity, and stability of the structure of the TP-SA-KGM film were significantly improved. The AFM images and results of molecular docking simulation indicated that TP could affect the cell wall of bacteria by acting with peptidoglycan. Finally, the film showed excellent preservation effects in both beef and apples, which suggested that TP-SA-KGM film could be a novel bioactive packaging material with wide application potential in food preservation.

Abstract
In recent years, new cross-linkers from renewable resources have been sought to replace toxic synthetic compounds of this type. One of the most popular synthetic cross-linking agents used for biomedical applications is glutaraldehyde. However, the unreacted cross-linker can be released from the materials and cause cytotoxic effects. In the present work, dialdehyde starch nanocrystals (NDASs) were obtained from this polysaccharide nanocrystal form as an alternative to commonly used cross-linking agents. Then, 5-15% NDASs were used for chemical cross-linking of native chitosan (CS), gelatin (Gel), and a mixture of these two biopolymers (CS-Gel) via Schiff base reaction. The obtained materials, forming thin films, were characterized by ATR-FTIR, SEM, and XRD analysis. Thermal and mechanical properties were determined by TGA analysis and tensile testing. Moreover, all cross-linked biopolymers were also characterized by hydrophilic character, swelling ability, and protein absorption. The toxicity of obtained materials was tested using the Microtox test. Dialdehyde starch nanocrystals appear as a beneficial plant-derived cross-linking agent that allows obtaining cross-linked biopolymer materials with properties desirable for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Biomimetic hydrogels composed of natural polysaccharides have invariably blossomed as niche biomaterials in tissue engineering applications. The prospects of creating an extracellular matrix (ECM)-like milieu from such hydrogels has garnered considerable importance. In this study, we have fabricated bioscaffolds comprising dialdehyde alginate and xanthan gum and explored their potential use in tissue regeneration. The fabricated scaffolds displayed an interconnected porous network structure that is highly desirable for the aforesaid application. The scaffolds were endowed with good mechanical properties, thermostability, protein adsorption efficacy and degradability. Curcumin-loaded hydrogels exhibited appreciable antibacterial activity against E. coli. In vitro cytocompatibility studies revealed that the scaffolds promoted adhesion and proliferation of 3T3 fibroblast cells. The Western blot analysis of p53 gene indicated no growth arrest or apoptosis in 3T3 cells thus, signifying the non-toxic nature of the scaffolds. Furthermore, the ECM formation was confirmed via SDS-PAGE analysis. The overall results clearly validated these scaffolds as effectual biomaterials for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Food packaging is designed to protect foods, to provide required information about the food, and to make food handling convenient for distribution to consumers. Packaging has a crucial role in the process of food quality, safety, and shelf-life extension. Possible interactions between food and packaging are important in what is concerning food quality and safety. This review tries to offer a picture of the most important types of active packaging emphasizing the controlled/target release antimicrobial and/or antioxidant packaging including system design, different methods of polymer matrix modification, and processing. The testing methods for the appreciation of the performance of active food packaging, as well as mechanisms and kinetics implied in active compounds release, are summarized. During the last years, many fast advancements in packaging technology appeared, including intelligent or smart packaging (IOSP), (i.e., time-temperature indicators (TTIs), gas indicators, radiofrequency identification (RFID), and others). Legislation is also discussed.

Abstract
Fish-derived gelatin (FG), a raw material for edible films, has recently been spotlighted as an alternative source of mammalian gelatin. However, its low stability under moisture conditions and weak mechanical properties limit its application. In this study, a water-stable and mechanically robust FG film was prepared using alginate dialdehyde (ADA) as an eco-friendly crosslinking agent. The crosslinking process of FG with ADA was easily recognized by the change in the color of the FG/ADA composite film, and the browning index of the FG/ADA film could be correlated well with the actual crosslinking degree. The mechanical strength and Young's modulus of the FG/ADA composite film increased significantly with an increase in the content of the ADA crosslinker. In the case of FG/ADA10, the tensile strength and Young's modulus increased by 400 and 600 %, respectively, compared to those of FG. Remarkably, the FG-ADA crosslinking process greatly decreased the vulnerability of FG in moisture environments. Consequently, the FG/ADA10 film remained stable for 30 days under wet environment. In addition, the FG-ADA crosslinking process could enhance the antioxidative capacity of the FG/ADA edible film. According to this study, FG/ADA composite films fabricated in an effective manner using polymers derived from aquatic species like gelatin from fish and ADA from algae could have practical applications in the edible film-based packaging industry.

Abstract
Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a common procedure to treat early and precancerous gastrointestinal lesions. Via submucosal injection, a liquid cushion is created to lift and separate the lesion and malignant part from the muscular layer where the formed indispensable space is convenient for endoscopic incision. Saline is a most common submucosal injection liquid, but the formed liquid pad lasts only a short time, and thus repeated injections increase the potential risk of adverse events. Hydrogels with high osmotic pressure and high viscosity are used as an alternate; however, with some drawbacks such as tissue damage, excessive injection resistance, and high cost. Here, we reported a nature derived hydrogel of gelatin-oxidized alginate (G-OALG). Based on the rheological analysis and compare to commercial endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) solution (0.25% hyaluronic acid, HA), a designed G-OALG hydrogel of desired concentration and composition showed higher performances in controllable gelation and injectability, higher viscosity and more stable structures. The G-OALG gel also showed lower propulsion resistance than 0.25% HA in the injection force assessment under standard endoscopic instruments, which eased the surgical operation. In addition, the G-OALG hydrogel showed good in vivo degradability biocompatibility. By comparing the results acquired via ESD to normal saline, the G-OALG shows great histocompatibility and excellent endoscopic injectability, and enables create a longer-lasting submucosal cushion. All the features have been confirmed in the living both pig and rat models. The G-OALG could be a promising submucosal injection agent for esophageal ESD. Injectable gel with controlled viscosity. Abstract
Active packaging (AP) is a new class of innovative food packaging, containing bioactive compounds, is able to maintain the quality of food and extend its shelf life by releasing active agent during storage. The main challenge in designing the AP system is slowing the release rate of active compounds for its prolonged activity. Controlled-release active packaging (CRP) is an innovative technology that provides control in the release of active compounds during storage. Various approaches have been proposed to design CRP. The purpose of this review was to gather and present the strategies utilized for release controlling of active compounds from food AP systems. The chemical modification of polymers, the preparation of multilayer films and the use of cross-linking agents are some methods tried in the last decades. Other approaches use molecular complexes and irradiation treatments. Micro- or nano-encapsulation of active compounds and using nano-structured materials in the AP film matrix are the newest techniques used for the preparation of CRP systems. The action mechanism for each technique was described and an effort was made to highlight representative published papers about each release controlling approach. This review will benefit future prospects of exploring other innovative release controlling methods in food CRP.

Abstract
The present study describes the fabrication of a novel alginate-di-aldehyde (ADA) cross-linked gelatin (GEL)/nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) bioscaffold by lyophilization process. The physico-chemical properties of the scaffolds were evaluated in order to assess its suitability for tissue engineering application. ADA was prepared from periodate oxidation of alginate which facilitate the crosslinking between free amino group of gelatin and available aldehyde group of ADA through Schiff's base formation. nHAp was synthesized from waste egg-shells by wet chemical method. The synthesized HAp was found crystalline and nanosize (~45 nm) by XRD and TEM analysis respectively. Ca to P ratio of nHAp is 1.51 as observed by EDX confirmed the suitability of the scaffold for biomedical application. The crosslinked ADA increases thermal stability of scaffolds. Water uptake and degradation ability significantly reduced with the increase of nHAp in the scaffold due to the higher stiffness contributed by nHAp. SEM analysis revealed that the pore size and porosity of the scaffolds declines with the proliferation of nHAp in the scaffolds. XRD analysis of the scaffolds shows the increase of crystallinity in the composites due to incorporation of nHAp and ADA. Cytotoxicity of the all scaffolds were examined by normal kidney epithelial cells (Vero cells) and the results confirmed the non-toxicity of the scaffolds, which proved it is extremely cytocompatible. These tunable physical properties and enhance biocompatibility of prepared scaffold offer advance application in soft tissue regeneration and could be a promising candidate for biomedical application.

Abstract
In the present work, antibiotic drug gentamicin sulfate (GS) has been loaded into alginate dialdehyde-crosslinked casein (CAS) films for wound dressing applications. The films have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The dynamic release of model drug GS has been investigated in the physiological fluid at 37 °C. The drug release data has been interpreted in the terms of various kinetic models such as Power function model, first order model and Schott model. The release data was found to be well fitted by Schott model. The various diffusion coefficients are also evaluated. The adsorption of model therapeutic protein BSA on the film has been investigated. The maximum adsorption is found to be 5.7 mg/cm2.The films were tested for their antibacterial and anti-fungal action. Finally, the in vivo wound healing study was carried out on Albino wistar rats.
