Fine grinding or expanding of feed as pre-treatment for pelleting in dependence on dietary rapeseed expeller proportion: Nutritional consequences for broilers

Optimization of processing parameters of 50 % aged paddy rice replace of corn in feed formula: effects of grinding sieve opening, conditioning temperature and time on the growth performance, meat quality and serum biochemical parameters in broilers

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different grinding sieve openings (SO), conditioning temperatures (CTP), and conditioning times (CTM) on feed processing performance, growth performance, meat quality, and serum biochemical indices of broiler chickens fed a diet in which 50 % of corn was replaced with aged paddy rice. A total of 960 white-feathered broiler chickens were randomly divided into 8 groups, with the experiment designed to test 2 SO sizes (2.0 mm and 2.5 mm), 2 CTPs (75 °C and 85 °C), and 2 CTMs (90 s and 180 s). The results showed that the 2.0 mm SO and 180 s CTM significantly improved pellet hardness and the pellet durability index (PDI) (P < 0.05). During the early stages of the experiment, when the broilers digestive systems were not fully developed, a 2.5 mm SO significantly reduced the feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P < 0.001), while 75 °C CTP significantly increased average daily gain (ADG) and body weight (BW) at day 21 (P < 0.05). Additionally, 75 °C CTP significantly reduced the cecum organ weight ratio (P < 0.05). In terms of meat quality, a 2.5 mm SO significantly reduced drip loss and cooking loss at 48 h and 72 h (P < 0.01, P < 0.01, P < 0.05), while a 90 s CTM significantly reduced drip loss and cooking loss at 24 h (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Furthermore, the combination of 2.5 mm SO and 90 s CTM significantly increased serum urea nitrogen (BUN) levels (P < 0.05). Considering the optimization of both growth performance and meat quality, the combination of 2.5 mm SO, 75 °C CTP, and 90 s CTM is recommended for optimizing aged paddy rice feed processing and enhancing broiler growth performance and meat quality.

Numerical Simulation and Analysis of the Airflow Field in the Crushing Chamber of the Hammer Mill

The airflow dynamics within hammer mills' crushing chambers significantly affect material crushing and screening. Understanding the crushing mechanism necessitates studying the airflow distribution. Using a self-built crushing test platform and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, we investigated the impact of screen aperture size, rotor speed, hammer-screen clearance, hammer quantity, and mass flow rate on airflow distribution within the rotor region, circulation layer, and screen apertures. Results indicated generally uniform axial static pressure distribution within the rotor region, with radial gradients. Increased rotor speed improved radial static pressure gradients, while higher mass flow rates reduced them. The highest airflow velocity within the circulation layer reached approximately 83.46% of the hammer tip's tangential velocity. Greater rotor speed and hammer quantity intensified circulation airflow, whereas increased mass flow rate decreased it. Eddies formed within screen apertures with higher rotor speeds and hammer quantities but diminished with larger apertures and higher mass flow rates. Static pressure differences across screen apertures increased with mass flow rate and rotor speed but decreased significantly with larger apertures. This systematic examination provides insights into airflow distribution within hammer mill crushing chambers, offering a theoretical foundation for improving and designing hammer mills.

Towards Large Particle Size in Compound Feed: Using Expander Conditioning Prior to Pelleting Improves Pellet Quality and Growth Performance of Broilers

During the processing of compound feed for broilers, several changes occur that affect the physical and probably the nutritional properties of pellets, influencing animal performance. The effects of mill type, particle size (PS) and expander conditioning prior to pelleting (E + P) were combined to generate pellets. A 2 × 3 × 2 factorial arrangement was designed with two mill types (a hammer mill (HM) or roller mill (RM)), three PSs (0.8, 1.2 or 1.6 mm) and two E + Ps (with or without expander processing prior to pelleting), with six replications of 12 unsexed Ross 308 broilers each. All the processing lines reduced the PS from mash to finished pellets via secondary grinding, by 2.35 times on average. However, RM grinding required less electric power (p < 0.001). The intended PS (0.8, 1.2 or 1.6 mm) did not affect this energy consumption. E + P and the PS interacted for the pellet durability index (PDI) (p = 0.006). The worst PDI in the pellets was observed when a PS of 1.6 mm without E + P was used. Only E + P positively affected starch (p < 0.001) and amino acids’ ileal apparent digestibility (p < 0.01). Organic matter (OM) (p = 0.02) and fat (p < 0.001) digestibility, as well as AMEN (p = 0.005) content, were influenced by the PS (main effect), whereas E + P and mill type interacted with these values (p < 0.005). Lower OM digestibility and AMEN content were observed when RM without E + P was used (p = 0.001). The feed conversion ratio (FCR) was enhanced and feed intake (FI) was improved with E + P. The combination of the RM mill, a 1.6 mm mean PS, and E + P improved FCR (three-way interaction, p = 0.019)), showing that for a higher PS, E + P is necessary for animal performance. Carcass yield was, on average, 80.1%. No effects on commercial cuts (breast, legs and wings) were observed. In contrast, abdominal fat was affected by mill type * PS (p = 0.012) and E + P * PS (p = 0.048) in a two-way interaction. The highest abdominal fat indicated an imbalance in the amino acid (AA)-to-AMEN ratio. Coarse PS promoted heavier gizzards (p = 0.02) but E + P tended to reduce them (p = 0.057). The processing steps improved pellet quality and feed efficiency associated with RM, coarse PS and E + P, highlighting the positive effects of E + P on abdominal fat and AMEN content, which should be adjusted to AA or reduced at formulation. However, these results are for an experimental processing plant and may not necessarily apply to larger plants, so the use of these data and methods should be considered as guidelines for replication at production sites.

Fine Grinding or Expanding as Pre-treatment for Pelleting in Processing Diets Varying in Dietary Rapeseed Expeller Proportions: Investigations on Performance, Visceral Organs, and Immunological Traits of Broilers

Pelleted feed is associated with improved broiler performance but also with a higher incidence of proventricular dilatation and ascites. The present study aimed to investigate influences of expanded and pelleted (ExP) or finely ground and pelleted feeds (FgP) containing either 6% rapeseed expeller (RSE) or 12% RSE on these adverse effects by studying performance, visceral organ, and immunological traits in 36 broilers. ExP reduced daily feed intake compared to FgP when feeding a 6% RSE diet (P < 0.05) but did not affect the daily feed intake when feeding a 12% RSE diet, which was also reflected in the body weight gain. There were no significant differences in the size of proventriculus and gizzard between feeding groups but significant diet-by-technical feed treatment interactions in case of proventricular and gizzard weights and the proventricular length (P < 0.05). Proventriculi and gizzards were heavier in birds fed 6%ExP than proventriculi or gizzards of animals from all other groups except for birds of the group 12%FgP. A total of three animals (1 from 6%ExP, 1 from 6%FgP, and 1 from 12%ExP) developed ascites during the study. Pooled LsMeans of peripheral blood leucocyte proportions of CD3⁺/CD4^-/CD8^- cells were increased in birds fed FgP compared to birds fed ExP (P = 0.048). Pooled LsMeans of CD3⁺/CD4⁺/CD8⁺ T cell subsets in jejunal lamina propria were higher in birds fed 12% RSE compared to birds fed 6% RSE (P = 0.024). Concluding, technical feed treatment or diet did not inhibit adverse effects of pelleting on gizzard and proventricular development. Morphometric alterations of proventriculus and gizzard might modify the local immune system of the distal digestive tract and promote the development of ascites; however, further studies are required to confirm this hypothesis since in the present study only three birds developed ascites.
