Abstract
Human observers can extract the mean emotion from multiple faces rapidly and precisely. However, whether attention is required in the ensemble coding of facial expressions remains debated. In this study, we examined the effect of attentional load on mean emotion processing with the dual-task paradigm. Individual emotion processing was also investigated as the control task. In the experiment, the letter string and a set of four happy or angry faces of various emotional intensities were shown. Participants had to complete the string task first, judging either the string color (low attention load) or the presence of the target letter (high attention load). Then a cue appeared indicating whether the secondary task was to evaluate the mean emotion of the faces or the emotion of the cued single face, and participants made their judgments on the visual analog scale. The results showed that compared with the color task, the letter task had a longer response time and lower accuracy, which verified the valid manipulation of the attention loads. More importantly, there was no significant difference in averaging performance between the low and high attention loads. By contrast, the individual face processing was impaired under the high attention load relative to the low attentional load. In addition, the advantage of extracting mean emotion over individual emotion was larger under the high attentional load. These results support the power of averaging and provide new evidence that a rather small amount of attention is needed in the ensemble coding of multiple facial expressions.

Abstract
When looking at groups of people, we can extract information from the different faces to derive properties of the group, such as its average facial emotion, although how this average is computed remains a matter of debate. Here, we examined whether our participants' personal familiarity with the faces in the group, as well as the intensity of the facial expressions, biased ensemble perception. Participants judged the average emotional expression of ensembles of four different identities whose expressions depicted either neutral, angry, or happy emotions. For the angry and happy expressions, the intensity of the emotion could be either low (e.g., slightly happy) or high (very happy). When all the identities in the ensemble were unfamiliar, the presence of any high intensity emotional face biased ensemble perception towards its emotion. However, when a familiar face was present in the ensemble, perception was biased towards the familiar face's emotion regardless of its intensity. These findings reveal that how we perceive the average emotion of a group is influenced by both the emotional intensity and familiarity of the faces comprising the group, supporting the idea that different faces may be weighted differently in ensemble perception. These findings have important implications for the judgements we make about a group's overall emotional state may be biased by individuals within the group.

Abstract
Familiar faces can be confidently recognized despite sometimes radical changes in their appearance. Exposure to within-person variability-differences in facial characteristics over successive encounters-contributes to face familiarization. Research also suggests that viewers create mental averages of the different views of faces they encounter while learning them. Averaging over within-person variability is thus a promising mechanism for face familiarization. In Experiment 1, 153 Canadian undergraduates (88 female; age: M = 21 years, SD = 5.24) learned six target identities from eight different photos of each target interspersed among 32 distractor identities. Face-matching accuracy improved similarly irrespective of awareness of the target's identity, confirming that target faces presented among distractors can be learned incidentally. In Experiment 2, 170 Canadian undergraduates (125 female; age: M = 22.6 years, SD = 6.02) were tested using a novel indirect measure of learning. The results show that viewers update a mental average of a person's face as it becomes learned. Our findings are the first to show how averaging within-person variability over time leads to face familiarization.

Abstract
Individuals can perceive the mean emotion or mean identity of a group of faces. It has been considered that individual representations are discarded when extracting a mean representation; for example, the "element-independent assumption" asserts that the extraction of a mean representation does not depend on recognizing or remembering individual items. The "element-dependent assumption" proposes that the extraction of a mean representation is closely connected to the processing of individual items. The processing mechanism of mean representations and individual representations remains unclear. The present study used a classic member-identification paradigm and manipulated the exposure time and set size to investigate the effect of attentional resources allocated to individual faces on the processing of both the mean emotion representation and individual representations in a set and the relationship between the two types of representations. The results showed that while the precision of individual representations was affected by attentional resources, the precision of the mean emotion representation did not change with it. Our results indicate that two different pathways may exist for extracting a mean emotion representation and individual representations and that the extraction of a mean emotion representation may have higher priority. Moreover, we found that individual faces in a group could be processed to a certain extent even under extremely short exposure time and that the precision of individual representations was relatively poor but individual representations were not discarded.

Abstract
Viewers can summarize redundant features in groups of objects into an ensemble percept. There appears to be separate mechanisms underlying ensemble perception of low- and high-level visual features, but it is unclear whether ensemble perception of different low-level features is supported by common mechanisms. Yörük and Boduroglu, in Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics 82 (2020) 852-864, investigated whether length and orientation summarization tap common mechanisms by examining the correlation between errors on length- and orientation-averaging tasks and concluded that because they did not find any correlations, the two features are summarized by different, feature-specific mechanisms. However, their study was conducted with a small sample size and included sources of individual performance variance that may have diminished correlations. We report two studies that tested the correlation between performance in the length- and orientation-averaging tasks, with larger samples and modifications that sought to reduce the sources of variance. Study 1 used ensembles that varied in both feature dimensions and Study 2 used ensembles that only varied in the task-relevant dimension. Both studies showed that errors in length- and orientation-averaging are correlated, suggesting that ensemble perception of these low-level features is supported, at least to some extent, by a common ability.

Abstract
Through ensemble encoding, the visual system compresses redundant statistical properties from multiple items into a single summary metric (e.g., average size). Numerous studies have shown that global summary information is extracted quickly, does not require access to single-item representations, and often interferes with reports of single items from the set. Yet a thorough understanding of ensemble processing would benefit from a more extensive investigation at the local level. Thus, the purpose of this study was to provide a more critical inspection of global-local processing in ensemble perception. Taking inspiration from Navon (Cognitive Psychology, 9(3), 353-383, 1977), we employed a novel paradigm that independently manipulates the degree of interference at the global (mean) or local (single item) level of the ensemble. Initial results were consistent with reciprocal interference between global and local ensemble processing. However, further testing revealed that local interference effects were better explained by interference from another summary statistic, the range of the set. Furthermore, participants were unable to disambiguate single items from the ensemble display from other items that were within the ensemble range but, critically, were not actually present in the ensemble. Thus, it appears that local item values are likely inferred based on their relationship to higher-order summary statistics such as the range and the mean. These results conflict with claims that local information is captured alongside global information in summary representations. In such studies, successful identification of set members was not compared with misidentification of items within the range, but which were nevertheless not presented within the set.

Abstract
Individuals have the ability to extract summary statistics from multiple items presented simultaneously. However, it is unclear yet whether we have insight into the process of ensemble coding. The aim of this study was to investigate metacognition about average face perception. Participants saw a group of four faces presented for 2 s or 5 s, and then they were asked to judge whether the following test face was present in the previous set (Experiment 1), or whether the test face was the average of the four member faces (Experiment 2). After each response, participants rated their confidence. Replicating previous findings, there was substantial endorsement for the average face derived from the four member faces in Experiment 1, even though it was not present in the set. When judging faces that had been presented in the set, confidence correlated positively with accuracy, providing evidence for metacognitive awareness of previously studied faces. Importantly, there was a negative confidence-accuracy relationship for judging average faces when duration was 2 s, and a near-zero relationship when duration was 5 s. By contrast, when the average face had to be identified explicitly in Experiment 2, performance was above chance level and there was a positive correlation between confidence and accuracy. These results suggest that people have metacognitive awareness about average face perception when averaging is required explicitly, but they lack insight into the averaging process when member identification is required.

Abstract
When objects from two categories of expertise (e.g., faces and cars in dual car/face experts) are processed simultaneously, competition occurs across a variety of tasks. Here, we investigate whether competition between face and car processing also occurs during ensemble coding. The relationship between single object recognition and ensemble coding is debated, but if ensemble coding relies on the same ability as object recognition, we expect cars to interfere with ensemble coding of faces as a function of car expertise. We measured the ability to judge the variability in identity of arrays of faces, in the presence of task-irrelevant distractors (cars or novel objects). On each trial, participants viewed two sequential arrays containing four faces and four distractors, judging which array was the more diverse in terms of face identity. We measured participants' car expertise, object recognition ability, and face recognition ability. Using Bayesian statistics, we found evidence against competition as a function of car expertise during ensemble coding of faces. Face recognition ability predicted ensemble judgments for faces, regardless of the category of task-irrelevant distractors. The result suggests that ensemble coding is not susceptible to competition between different domains of similar expertise, unlike single-object recognition.

Abstract
Background The visual system uses ensemble perception to summarize visual input across a variety of domains. This heuristic operates at multiple levels of vision, compressing information as basic as oriented lines or as complex as emotional faces. Given its pervasiveness, the ensemble unsurprisingly can influence how an individual item is perceived, and vice versa. Methods In the current experiments, we tested whether the perceived emotional valence of a single scene could be influenced by surrounding, simultaneously presented scenes. Observers first rated the emotional valence of a series of individual scenes. They then saw ensembles of the original images, presented in sets of four, and were cued to rate, for a second time, one of four. Results Results confirmed that the perceived emotional valence of the cued image was pulled toward the mean emotion of the surrounding ensemble on the majority of trials, even though the ensemble was task-irrelevant. Control experiments and analyses confirmed that the pull was driven by high-level, ensemble information. Conclusion We conclude that high-level ensemble information can influence how we perceive individual items in a crowd, even when working memory demands are low and the ensemble information is not directly task-relevant.

Abstract
Extensive behavioral work has documented the ability of the human visual system to extract summary representations from face ensembles (e.g., the average identity of a crowd of faces). Yet, the nature of such representations, their underlying neural mechanisms, and their temporal dynamics await elucidation. Here, we examine summary representations of facial identity in human adults (of both sexes) with the aid of pattern analyses, as applied to EEG data, along with behavioral testing. Our findings confirm the ability of the visual system to form such representations both explicitly and implicitly (i.e., with or without the use of specific instructions). We show that summary representations, rather than individual ensemble constituents, can be decoded from neural signals elicited by ensemble perception, we describe the properties of such representations by appeal to multidimensional face space constructs, and we visualize their content through neural-based image reconstruction. Further, we show that the temporal profile of ensemble processing diverges systematically from that of single faces consistent with a slower, more gradual accumulation of perceptual information. Thus, our findings reveal the representational basis of ensemble processing, its fine-grained visual content, and its neural dynamics.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Humans encounter groups of faces, or ensembles, in a variety of environments. Previous behavioral research has investigated how humans process face ensembles as well as the types of summary representations that can be derived from them, such as average emotion, gender, and identity. However, the neural mechanisms mediating these processes are unclear. Here, we demonstrate that ensemble representations, with different facial identity summaries, can be decoded and even visualized from neural data through multivariate analyses. These results provide, to our knowledge, the first detailed investigation into the status and the visual content of neural ensemble representations of faces. Further, the current findings shed light on the temporal dynamics of face ensembles and its relationship with single-face processing.

Abstract
This study explored the modulatory role of independent/interdependent self-construal on ensemble perception. Two experiments were conducted to study the effect of self-construal on ensemble coding of multiple-face identities (Experiment 1) and dot size (Experiment 2) separately. Before the implicit ensemble perception task, participants in both experiments were either primed with independent or interdependent self-construal via a well-validated pronoun circle task, in which they were exposed to either singular ("I," "me," and "my") or plural ("We," "us," and "our") pronouns in essays. The results showed that interdependent self-construal (vs. independent self-construal) featured as global processing and emphasizing interconnectedness with others enhanced the ensemble coding of high-level features (e.g., identity in Experiment 1) but not of low-level features (e.g., size in Experiment 2). To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first to investigate the role of self-construal on ensemble representations. In sum, the results of the current study supported the domain-specific mechanism of ensemble perception on one hand, and extended the effect of self-construal on single face recognition to multiple face recognition on the other hand.

Abstract
The hierarchical view of working memory suggested that object ensemble could also be stored into working memory by treating ensemble properties as single "unit." However, it remains unclear whether ensemble representation in working memory is vulnerable to attention demanding. The present study designed a dual-task paradigm constituting of a memory retaining task and an attention-demanding arrow flanker task. Participants were firstly presented an array (4 or 9) of facial images with neutral expressions and then shown a left- or right-orientated arrow surrounded by four congruent or incongruent oriented arrows or short lines. Participants judged the orientation of the target arrow and then indicated whether a probe facial image was present or absent in the preceding facial array. The probe face consisted of four conditions: (1) a morphed average face of prior face set, (2) a morphed average face of another face set, (3) an exemplar face of prior set, and (4) an exemplar face of another face set. Results confirmed that participants implicitly coded the average facial image of preceding set and retained in working memory. More importantly, the memory representation of ensemble property (e.g., average facial identity) was independent of flanker type. In sum, this study provided further evidence of the hierarchical view of working memory and suggested that attention was not a pre-requisite for the retaining of ensemble properties in working memory.
