Cultural stereotypes and personal beliefs about thin people: A form of fat resistance

Stereotypes about fatness and fat people are central to a large body of research examining how fatness operates in intergroup relations, and much is known about the content of these stereotypes about fat people. However, intergroup relations are necessarily bidirectional, and many fat people engage in resistance of the thin ideal, challenging the social power afforded to thinness. Building upon evidence that members of other marginalized groups engage in upward stereotyping - that is, hold stereotypes about members of relevant advantaged groups - we examined fat people's knowledge and endorsement of stereotypes about thin people to gain insight into fat people's resistance. In Study 1, we used a qualitative paradigm to elucidate fat people's (N = 196) awareness of cultural stereotypes about thin people. In Study 2, we examined fat people's (N = 139) personal endorsement of these stereotypes about thin people. Participants generally endorsed thin stereotypes at or above the scale mean, and endorsement of thin stereotyping was positively associated with fat people's resistance to the notion that thin people are superior. Together, these studies highlight novel stereotype content about thin people and provide insight into fat people's cognitive, affective, and attitudinal experiences within fat-thin intergroup relations.

Lateral Gender-Based Violence in 2SLGBTQ+ Communities: The Stifling of Queer Joy Through Intersectional Oppression, "Pitiful" Sexuality Education, and Media (Mis)Representation

There is a gap in the field of gender-based violence concerning lateral violence within 2SLGBTQ+ communities. This paper helps fill that gap by offering participants' narratives from The Queer Sexual Joy Project, which engaged 100 2SLGBTQ+ youth from Canada and the US, ages 18-35, in focus groups, participatory visual arts-based research, one-on-one interviews, and surveys. The study provides insight into how lateral violence is fueled and expressed through overlapping and intersecting systems of oppression, including fatphobia, transphobia, sexism and misogyny, racism, and ableism. Participants' experiences also highlighted that while lateral violence reduces the potentialities of queer sexual joy, this violence is catalyzed and reproduced through troubling depictions of 2SLGBTQ+ communities in popular media and sexuality education. The paper calls for further research on lateral violence and for increased and diverse representation of 2SLGBTQ+ communities in media and education to help address the disproportionately high rates of gender-based violence in these communities.

"I'm coming out!": An autoethnographic situation of sel/f/ves within queer fat chronically Ill identity

In this article, we (two fat, white, queer, nonbinary, chronically ill critical social work scholars) explore the parallel processes of coming out as fat and coming out as other identities (queer, femme, neurodivergent, nonbinary, chronically ill, disabled). We begin by reviewing literature from queer theories, crip theory, and fat studies, addressing concepts of "coming out" and identity. Next, taking an identity-centered autoethnographic and autoarchaeological approach, we explore how the processes in coming out as fat-growing critical consciousness, positive social identity reclamation, community belonging-mirrored other coming out processes, fostering resilience in our lives. We perform this reflection on sense(s) of self within a queer critical intersectional approach, as we individually and collectively examine how our fat identities are situated within our gender, racial, class, ability, health, and sexual orientation contexts. We interrogate how these identities of fatness and beyond, both privileged and oppressed, interplay in our personal, professional, and health-related experiences, and interactions with others. Finally, building off of the theoretical work proposed by Hunger, Major, and Blodorn (2015), we integrate concepts of critical consciousness, positive social identity, and community connectedness into the social identity threat model (as applied to weight stigma), hypothesizing how these potential positive outcomes of "coming out" may moderate the relationship between the psychological stress associated with marginalized identity and the adverse physical and mental health outcomes commonly associated with oppression and minority stress.

Stereotype Application at the Intersection of Body Shape, Gender/Sex, and Sexual Orientation

Though much work has examined how sexual orientation and body shape are jointly constituted, less has examined the joint perception of body shape, gender/sex, and sexuality. We draw upon multifarious person perception approaches to examine how personality and sexuality-related traits are attributed to bodies of varying shape (skinny, average, fat) when presented with differing social identities along the axes of gender/sex (male, female) and sexual orientation (heterosexual, lesbian/gay). In a sample of 991 participants, we found robust evidence that trait application varied by both body shape and sexual orientation. Further, supporting our hypotheses, we found that gay male bodies were perceived as more feminine than heterosexual male bodies, and skinny male bodies were perceived as more feminine than other body shapes. Supporting additional hypothesizing, lesbian female bodies were perceived as more masculine than heterosexual female bodies, and fat female bodies were perceived as the most masculine across sexual orientations. Partially supporting our hypotheses, we found that average bodies were perceived as the most typical for all identities; further, bodies perceived as less typical of their social identity category were perceived as experiencing heightened prejudice on the basis of body shape.
