Global trends in poliomyelitis research over the past 20 years: A bibliometric analysis

Poliomyelitis in Nigeria: Impact of Vaccination Services and Polio Intervention and Eradication Efforts

Background: Polio is an infectious viral disease that can cause paralytic complications and death. Despite global efforts to eradicate wild poliovirus, there are ongoing outbreaks globally and the mutated form of paralytic polio, i.e., circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus, is present in Nigeria. Low vaccination uptake and poor sanitation are responsible for outbreaks in countries where polio had previously been eliminated. This review identifies policies, strategies and interventions for polio eradication and assesses their impact on polio vaccine uptake and eradication efforts in Nigeria. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted and guided by the Population, Intervention, Comparator and Outcome (PICO) framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart, with identified articles appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program appraisal tool. Results: A total of 393 articles were identified, of which 26 articles were included. Key findings indicate polio intervention services, policies and mass campaigns have had a significant impact on eradicating WPV in Nigeria. However, there are gaps in variant polio eradication efforts, with low vaccination uptake, poor surveillance, vaccine hesitancy, lack of community engagement, weaknesses in the healthcare system and other challenges in Nigeria regionally and nationally, posing a risk to public health that threatens the eradication of all forms of polio in Nigeria. Conclusions: Recommendations are suggested for changes to practice and policy to improve polio vaccination uptake in Nigeria and globally in the short-term (1-2 years), mid-term (3-4 years) and long-term (5+ years). Collaborative targeted polio vaccination programs and funding of public health infrastructure are imperative globally alongside national strategic policy intervention frameworks to strengthen the World Health Organization Global Polio Eradication Initiative and improve vaccine uptake and monitoring of vaccine hesitancy. Simultaneous health-literate community engagement is needed to achieve and maintain polio eradication efforts, which must be integrated into national health frameworks and coordinated across the African continent.

Bibliometric and visualized analysis of type 2 diabetic osteoporosis from 2013 to 2022

Type 2 diabetic osteoporosis (T2DOP) has received increasing attention from researchers. In this study, a total of 453 publications related to T2DOP from 2013 to 2022 were analyzed using bibliometric and visual analysis to identify the research trends and research hotspots in the field of T2DOP.

PURPOSE

The objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of T2DOP-related publications from 2013 to 2022 to determine global research trends in T2DOP in terms of number of publications, countries/regions, institutions, authors, journals, funding agencies, and keywords.

METHODS

All data were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). All original research publications regarding T2DOP from 2013 to 2022 were retrieved. VOSviewer and Microsoft Office Excel were used to conduct the bibliometric and visual analysis.

RESULTS

From 2013 to 2022, 515 relevant publications were published, with a peak in 2022 in the annual number of publications. The countries leading the research were USA and China. Sugimoto was the most influential authors. Capital Medical University and Nanjing Medical University were the most prolific institutions. Osteoporosis International was the most productive journal concerning T2DOP research. National Natural Science Foundation of China was the primary funding source for this research area. "Bone-mineral density", "fracture risk", and "postmenopausal women" were the most high-frequency keywords over the past 10 years.

CONCLUSION

This was the first bibliometric study of diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis to exclusively examine type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our findings would provide guidance to understand the research frontiers and hot directions in the near future.

Unveiling global research trends and hotspots on mitochondria in NAFLD from 2000 to 2023: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has garnered significant attention in the past decade as a prevalent chronic liver condition. Despite a growing body of evidence implicating mitochondria in NAFLD development, comprehensive bibliometric analyses within this research domain are scarce. This study aims to provide a thorough overview of the knowledge framework and key research areas related to mitochondria in the context of NAFLD, utilizing bibliometric techniques.

METHODS

A comprehensive search of publications on mitochondria in NAFLD from 2000 to 2023 was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection database. VOSviewers, CiteSpace, and the R package "bibliometrix" were employed for a precise assessment of the literature.

RESULTS

Examining 2530 articles from 77 countries, primarily led by the United States and China, revealed a consistent increase in publications on mitochondria's role in NAFLD. Leading research institutions include the University of Coimbra, the University of Missouri, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Notably, the International Journal of Molecular Sciences emerged as the most popular journal, and Hepatology was the most frequently cited. With contributions from 14,543 authors, Michael Roden published the highest number of papers, and A. J. Samyal was the most frequently cocited author. Key focus areas include investigating mitochondrial mechanisms impacting NAFLD and developing therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondria. Emerging research hotspots are associated with keywords such as "inflammation," "mitochondrial dysfunction," "autophagy," "obesity," and "insulin resistance."

CONCLUSION

This study, the first comprehensive bibliometric analysis, synthesizes research trends and advancements in the role of mitochondria in NAFLD. Insights derived from this analysis illuminate current frontiers and emerging areas of interest, providing a valuable reference for scholars dedicated to mitochondrial studies.

Analysis of global research hotspots and trends in immune cells in intervertebral disc degeneration: A bibliometric study

Intervertebral disc degeneration is an important pathological basis for spinal degenerative diseases. The imbalance of the immune microenvironment and the involvement of immune cells has been shown to lead to nucleus pulposus cells death. This article presents a bibliometric analysis of studies on immune cells in IDD in order to clarify the current status and hotspots. We searched the WOSCC, Scopus and PubMed databases from 01/01/2001 to 08/03/2023. We analyzed and visualized the content using software such as Citespace, Vosviewer and the bibliometrix. This study found that the number of annual publications is increasing year on year. The journal study found that Spine had the highest number of articles and citations. The country/regions analysis showed that China had the highest number of publications, the USA had the highest number of citations and total link strength. The institutional analysis found that Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Huazhong University of Science Technology had the highest number of publications, Tokai University had the highest citations, and the University of Bern had the highest total link strength. Sakai D and Risbud MV had the highest number of publications. Sakai D had the highest total link strength, and Risbud MV had the highest number of citations. The results of the keyword analysis suggested that the current research hotspots and future directions continue to be the study of the mechanisms of immune cells in IDD, the therapeutic role of immune cells in IDD and the role of immune cells in tissue engineering for IDD.
