Abstract
There is growing interest about marine bivalve aquaculture globally, not only for the market value of the goods produced, but also for the socio-economic and environmental services that this activity can provide. Arca noae is an endemic Mediterranean bivalve of commercial value, whose previously undescribed population in Elounda Bay we studied in terms of its structure and reproduction, while constructing a timeseries of the basic environmental parameters of the bay, thus, gaining fundamental knowledge for the potential future exploitation of the species in the area. We found a variable spatial distribution of arks in the study area, with local high peaks in the population density, consisting of smaller size individuals, in comparison to other areas. Because of protandry of the species, human pressure on this population could have a strong negative effect, by targeting the limited numbers of large females in the study area. The reproduction pattern was similar to the reports from other Mediterranean locations. The abiotic conditions in Elounda Bay differed from those in the adjacent coastal zone, confirming that the Bay is a unique semi-enclosed marine area in the island of Crete.

Abstract
Larkinia grandis (Broderip & G.B. Sowerby I, 1829), an important fishing resource for Mexican communities, is an Arcidae clam. It is also considered a species with aquaculture potential. In this work we investigated the gonadal phases and sexuality in a population of L. grandis in the Gulf of California. Our findings support the hypothesis that there is one male per female in the population studied. It also documents that the shape, position and color of the gonads of L. grandis are consistent with observations in other Arcidae species. Additionally, five gonadal phases are differentiated and described in males and females (development, mature, spawning, post-spawning and resting), with a noticeable presence of brown cells during post-spawning and the onset of the resting phase, suggesting that those cells are involved in the reabsorption of remnants. Additionally, asynchronous gametogenesis in males, synchronic gametogenesis in females and batch spawning are defined. The results of this contribution can be used in the efforts to protect this bivalve.

Abstract
Size-structure analyses and gonad characteristics of the elongate sunset clam Gari elongata from the coastal waters of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, Philippines, was determined in this study. An opportunistic sampling approach was applied during the collection of G. elongata from the coastal waters of Brgy. Loyola and Brgy. Aquino. A total of 1437 G. elongata individuals were subjected to length-weight measurements, and gonads from five (5) individuals per sex among size classes were processed for histological characterization. The maximum total length of G. elongata recorded is 5.42 cm, way smaller than its congeners elsewhere, which is at 7.0-9.2 cm. The size-structure analysis shows that G. elongata from Brgy. Loyola exhibited negative allometric growth while those gleaned from Brgy. Aquino exhibited positive allometry indicating variation in growth dynamics. Known as a gleaning source, Barangay Loyola is abundant in G. elongata, but individuals are much smaller compared to those gathered from Barangay Aquino. A ratio of 1:1 for male and female classification was observed, as seen from gonad histological analyses. Ovaries were found in the spawning capable state with gonads in ripe (30%), spent (25%), early development (25%), and partially spawning (20%) stages. Testes were found to be in the ripe (40%), early developing (10%), spent (10%), and partially spawning (40%) stages. Gari elongata exhibits spawning capable gonads at 2.85 cm and 2.95 cm for males and females, respectively, which suggests that the shellfish has adapted early to reproduction to maintain its population in the coastal waters of Hinatuan. The small body lengths of individuals with mature gonads indicate that G. elongata may have been exposed to some stress in their natural environment. Regulated management of G. elongata to avoid over-harvesting and assessment of water and sediment quality of their natural habitat is highly recommended

Abstract
The current study examined the concentrations of ten trace elements (TE) (nickel, chromium, cadmium, iron, zinc, manganese, aluminum, copper, selenium and lead) in the edible tissue of the Ark shell Arca noae (L. 1758) from a Mediterranean coastal lagoon, the Bizerte lagoon during 2013-2014. The analysis of several redox status biomarkers, metallothioneins (MTs), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), was monitored as a response to TE bioaccumulation and environmental parameters variability. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed between mean seasonal TE concentrations in A. noae soft tissue. The highest TE concentrations in A. noae soft tissues were recorded during summer, which coincided with the increase of body dry weight (BDW) and the gonad index (GI). During this season, biomarker responses were enhanced, revealing significant increases of MTs, MDA and GSH levels as well as GPx activity in A. noae tissues, while a decrease of AChE activity was observed. The levels of TE analyzed in A. noae and several parameters used to assess the potential human risk (estimated weekly intake, target hazard quotient and target hazard risk) were lower than the permissible limits for safe seafood consumption. Consequently, this shellfish can be considered safe for human consumption. This preliminary study presents prospects for the valorization of this seafood product in Tunisia's food sector. It also gives basal information for future environmental assessment studies in which A. noae could be used as early warning tools in the field of biomonitoring programs and confirms the usefulness of biomarkers to monitor the health status of aquatic organisms.
